001 阅读01 Butterflies are common all over the world, but the ones in hot countries are usually bigger and more brightly colored than those in cooler countries and there are more different kinds. Usually the male butterflies more brightly colored than the female. The female have bigger and heavier bodies, since they carry the eggs. The gay (鲜艳的) colors of the male help to attract (吸引) the female and the duller colors of the female make them less likely to be caught by enemies before they have laid their eggs. Some butterflies have a bright pattern of colors on the upper surface of their wings, which show when they fly, but when they rest on a tree or leaf, they close their wings. On the undersides of their wings there are green and brown markings which look like the tree or leaf. They are then difficult to see. The best example of this is the Dead Leaf Butterfly. When its wings are close, it looks exactly like a dead leaf. There are even marks that look like the holes in a dead leaf. When a bird is chasing a butterfly, and it close its wings, it seems to have disappeared completely. Many butterflies have round marks on their wings that look like eyes. When they are resting, and their wings are folded, these cannot be seen. When a bird sees one, and begins to attack it, the butterfly opens its wings. The bird thinks that it sees two eyes staring at it, and it is frightened to fly away.
The other day I heard an American say to a Chinese student of English "You speak very good English." But the student answered, "No, no. My English is very poor." The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the student had not heard him clearly, he said, "Yes indeed, you speak English very well." But the Chinese student still kept saying "No". In the end the foreigner gave up and was at a loss what to say. What's wrong with the student's answer? It is because he did not accept a compliment(赞美的话)as the English people do. He should have said "Thank you" instead of "No". He actually understood what the American had said. But he thought he should be modest. If he said "Thank you", that would mean he was too proud. According to the western culture, if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say "Thank you". If someone says to a Woman "You look so beautiful with the new clothes on", she should be very happy and answer "Thank you". In our country we think being modest is a virtue and showing off a bad thing. But in the west, if you are modest and say "No, I'm afraid I can't do it well", then the others will take it for granted that you really cannot do it. If you often say "No", you will certainly be looked down upon by others. When asking for a job, if one says something like "Let me have a try on the job" instead of "Yes, I can certainly do it," he or she will never expect to get it. So in the west one should always be confident. Without self-confidenc
e, he cannot go anywhere. Confidence is of great importance to one in a country where competition is quite keen.
Why was the American surprised at the Chinese student's answer?
A.Because he wondered whether the student could really speak good English.
B.Because he could hardly hear what the student had said.
C.Because he wouldn't like others to say "No".
D.Because the way to accept a compliment in China is not the same as that in the western countries.

I'd been living with my wife for eight years and one night “morn” says, “I guess you guys are never gonna get married. I mean, you've been through jail together, you' e living together, but.., oh, forget it.”
“Oh, well,” I said, “put it like that and I'll marry your daughter tomorrow.”
Actually, I don't know what we were waiting for, except that for a guy it's never the right time to get married. I' m also suspicious of any two people who don' t struggle with that decision. Part of my problem was that I was still lusting in my heart after other ladies. But somehow I knew that I wasn't going to find another woman remotely as great as my soon-to-be wife. It's a good thing my mother-in-law finally spoke up.
I finally gathered my courage one day when we were having a picnic, and popped the question. I also gave my wife a big tourist pamphlet about Switzerland. I wasn't taking any chances.
She said no.
It killed me. I felt sick to my stomach. I lost my appetite. Our dog just stared at me, thinking, “If you're not going to eat your lunch, I will.” Finally, I said, “But the Switzerland trip is yours if you say yes.”
“Switzerland,” she said, “is filled with precise, humorless people.”
“Maybe I should have suggested Paris?”
For a minute it seemed as if my change in travel plans would rate a solid “maybe”. But she said no we woke up the next morning, she told me that she'd slept on my proposal. “I guess I was a little rude to you last night,” she explained. Meanwhile, I' m figuring I' m off the hook for this marriage thing for at least another eight years. I could afford to be generous.
“I asked, you said no. It's okay,” I said. I might have looked a little too relieved because later that day she gave me a little box. Inside was a gold watch. On the back was inscribed. “Yes. I've reconsidered.”
I liked the watch, so I did the right thing.

Our analysis therefore suggests that the real problem facing the black community lies in the educational obstacles prior to the Ph. D. programs rather than in the pour-in of foreign students. Equally, our analysis suggests that we ought to treat foreign students as an important source of brain gain for us and that we ought to facilitate, rather than hinder, their arrival and their entry into our work force. How could this be done?
There is a long-standing provision in our immigration laws under which those who bring in a certain amount of financial capital (which will "create jobs") are allowed to immigrate: A foreigner who invests one million dollars in a commercial enterprise established in a high-unemployment area, which creates jobs for at least ten Americans, is automatically given immigrant status (i.e., a green card). We suggest extending the idea from financial to human capital.
Currently, graduate students who wish to stay on in the United States after their Ph. D. s must be sponsored by their employers, a process that imposes substantial hardship both on the students and on smaller employers.
The standard procedure is in two stages. First, the U. S. Department of Labor must, on the basis of a U. S. employer's sponsorship, certify that "no American can do this job." Then, the would-be immigrant must apply for immigrant status at the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). If all goes right, the entire process takes about two years (considerably more for citizens of certain countries). But things may not go right: there could be problems at either stage. Thus, the employer or the "alien" must hire an immigration lawyer. The current process, then, is costly both to the would-be immigrant and to the employer (and hence, it unfairly penalizes smaller firms that cannot afford this expensive process and so cannot recruit this foreign talent).
The Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1990 introduced an alternative route for professors and researchers to secure immigrant status. Essentially, it
eliminates the average processing time to about one year, it does not eliminate any of the uncertainty or the need for expensive legal counsel.
We budget that automatic green cards be given to all those who obtain a Ph. D. in the science and engineering programs at our universities. In adopting such a "guaranteed green card" proposal, we would be recognizing the important contribution that these students make to our leading position in science by giving equal weight to human capital and financial capital.
Prior to this text, the author has most probably made an analysis of ______.
A.brain gain in the United States.
B.the cause of problems of the black people.
C.the U. S educational programs for blacks.
D.the procedure of foreign students' immigration.
Why isn’t a dollar worth as much as it used to be ? One dollar is always worth the same amount , that is , 100 cents. But the value of a dollar is how much it can buy. The value of money depends on the cost of living. Economists say that the cost of living is the money that a family must pay for the necessities of life such as food, hou
sing or rent , clothes, and medical expenses. For many years now, the cost of living has increased greatly, so the value of the dollar has decreased. When a dollar has a low value, you cannot buy as many things with it.

No one fully understands why the cost of living keeps increasing, but economists believe that workers and producers can make prices go up . As workers earn more money, they have more money to spend, so they demand more goods. If there is a great demand for certain goods, the prices of these goods go up. At the same time , if there’s a shortage of goods, the prices also go up. For example, if everyone wants to buy more and more gas, the price of gas goes up. When companies keep gas from buyers, they can also make the price of gas go up.

Families need to know what happens to their money. They need to make their income meet the cost of living, so many people plan a family budget. A budget is a list of monthly expenses. If your expenses add up to more than your income, you must find ways to save money. Maybe you’re spending too much on entertainment. Or if you’re spending too much on clothes, you may want to sew your own clothes. Budgeting helps you spend your money wisely as the cost of living increases.

Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they give him wood and other useful things, they give him cool places, and they help to stop drought(干旱) and flood. Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these points is the most important. Man wants to make money from trees,so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And also, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear. This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even worse: for where there are trees, their roots(根) break up soil-make the rain in-and also bind(固定) the soil, thus stopping it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing is left but useless desert. most important points of trees to man is that ________. help him to make money give him cool give him wood and other things help him to stop drought and floods many places forests slowly disappear because ________ . trees have been cut down by man trees are not well looked after has not paid enough attention to planting trees

What should you think about in trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition she won last year.

As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.

A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?”

“No,” she replied, “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”

I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a f
earful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.

Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借用) my daughter’s experience.

While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough a way to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.

62. What do we learn from the first paragraph?

A) Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activites.

B) Rebecca is much too occupied to enjoy her leisure time.

C) Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing.

D) A lot of distractions compete for children’s time nowadays.

63. What did the author say about her own writing experience?

A) She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.

B) Her way to success was full of pains and frustrations.

C) She was constantly under pressure of writing more.

D) Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.

64. Why did Rebecca want to enter this year’s writing contest?

A) She believed she possessed real talent for writing.

B) She was sure of winning with her mother’s help.

C) She wanted to share her stories with readers.

D) She had won a prize in the previous contest.

65. The author took great pains to refine her daughter’s stories because _______.

A) she believed she had the knowledge and experience to offer guidance

B) she did not want to disappoint Rebecca who needed her help so much

C) she wanted to help Rebecca realize her dream of becoming a writer

D) she was afraid Rebecca’s imagination might run wild while writing.

66. What’s the author’s advice for parents?

A) A writing career, though attractive, is not for every child to pursue.

B) Children should be allowed freedom to grow through experience.

C) Parents should keep an eye on the activities their kids engage in.

D) Children should be given every chance to voice their opinions.
Ever since Stephanie’s 13th birthday we have been receiving comments from other adults expressing their sympathies because our daughter is now a teenager. We’ve heard everything from, “Sure she’s a good kid, but just wait, now that she’s a teenager…” to the ever inspiring, “Well, all kids are rotten when they are teenagers, just try to go through it the best way you can.” What’s
more upsetting is that many of these insensitive adults feel the need to share their negative predictions well within the hearing of both our daughters.
I know that teenagers can be moody and difficult at times, but I’m 32 and I can also be difficult and moody. We worry about the future and want today’s kids to know that we care for them and that there are opportunities that await them. However, at the very point they set out on that journey toward adulthood we stand there and watching them disapprovingly, just waiting for them to make a mistake, “just like we knew they would.” We tell them to respect themselves and to say no to drugs, yet we fail to set a positive example by treating them with kindness and consideration, demonstrating our respect for them.
I have, at times, been guilty of this behavior but am now realizing that the more I see each person as a person, the more I am pleasantly surprised in some way or another. For example, a few weeks ago my husband and I were having dinner at our favorite restaurant and two teenage boys came in and sat down right beside us. I must admit that my first thought was, “Perfect, there goes our quiet, peaceful dinner.” I was so wrong! These young men were well behaved, quiet and left a nice tip for the waitress. Once I looked beyond the jeans so loose they were practically falling off and the multi-colored hair, I saw what fine people these kids were.
Many of the people who, perhaps unknowingly, treat teens with disrespect are unhappy about the fact that pop singers and sport stars are our children’s heroes. I feel that unless we give them something better to go after, we really shouldn’t complain.

21. When their children reach their teens, parents usually expect ________.
A) trouble
B) sympathy
C) congratulations
D) inspiring comments

22. In the author’s opinion, the trouble with parents is ________.
A) they are too watchful of their teenage children
B) they are too concerned about their children’s future
C) they fail to treat teenagers with sufficient kindness and respect
D) they speak ill of their children within their hearing

23. When two teenagers came into the restaurant and sat beside the author, her first thought was ________.
A) her quiet dinner with her husband would be ruined
B) something interesting was going to happen over dinner
C) they were wrong to have chosen this restaurant for dinner
D) she and her husband were going to have a pleasant surprise
Google, the Internet search-engine company, has announced it will give more than twenty-five million dollars in money and investments to help the poor. The company says the effort involves using the power of information and technology to help people improve their lives.

The general objective of an MBA (工商管理硕士) programme is to build on the knowledge and skills of the students taking the courses to enable them to operate effectively at a strategic (战略的) level within an organization. Courses begin by developing an understanding of, and skills in, the major functional areas of business. Next, from this foundation specific topics in management are considered, including project management and international management. Students are expected to be able to operate in a multi-disciplinary (多学科) way. The final stage normally focuses on strategic management and requires students to undertake a major organization-based project. The emphasis of the course is on skills development and the application of learning to workplace situations. Each course includes a period of work experience in a local organization as well as a full programme of company visits and guest speakers. Entry to a one-year MBA programme requires a good honours degree or similar professional qualifications. Applicants normally have at least two years' work experience and a working level of English. Student enrollments occur twice each year, in January and September. Liverpool Business School offers an MBA programme and has developed skills in designing, delivering and assessing business and m

Every time we open our mouths and speak we label ourselves -- I am English, you may be Bulgarian or African. We are all human beings, but sometimes we have communication problems which can lead to suspicion and misunderstanding.

If you speak English, you have an advantage. The English language means power and freedom to many. It dominates international relations. It affects nearly all our lives in one way or another, influencing everything from pop music to diplomatic relations. Yet only around 10% of the world's population are native English speakers. Many of you reading now will have struggled to learn the grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation of this very complicated language. But there could be another solution: learning Esperanto.

Esperanto, meaning "one who hopes", is an artificial language, said to be the easiest in the world to learn. It was invented in 1887 by Ludwig Zamnehof, a young Polish optician (眼镜商).

The usefulness of Esperanto has been recognized the world over. It is now estimated that around eight million people in over 100 countries have at least some knowledge of it.

In Esperanto, we have a language that is easy to learn and fair to all speakers because it belongs not to one nation but to us all. Many people who have tried to learn other languages and failed, have succeeded in Esperanto because it is so easy. Although it is often seen as a joke and not as an important living language, it has been considered dangerous and governments are sometimes afraid of it.

Your view of the world is largely based on the language you speak. If you are French, you have a French view, if you are Chinese view and so on. Peter Miles, of the Esperanto Translation Service in England, says that speaking Esperanto gives you a truly international view of the world. He

There are three kinds of goals: short-term,medium-range and long-term goals.

Short-range goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily goals can be achieved in a week or less,or two weeks,or possible should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation ,out long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term completing our short-term goals,we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed.

The intermediate goals bukld on the foundation of the short-range might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year,or they could even extend for several time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. It is easier to negotiate initial salary requirement because once you are inside, the organizational constraints (约束) influence wage increases. One thing, however, is certain: your chances of getting the raise you feel you deserve are less if you don’t at least ask for it. Men tend to ask for more, and they get more, and this holds true with other resources, not just pay increases. Consider Beth’s story:

I did not get what I wanted when I did not ask for it. We had cubicle (小隔间) offices

and window offices. I sat in the cubicles with several male colleagues. One by one they were moved into window offices, while I remained in the cubicles, several males who were hired after me also went to offices. One in particular told me he was next in line for an office and that it had been part of his negotiations for the job. I guess they thought me content to stay in the cubicles since I did not voice my opinion either way.

It would be nice if we all received automatic pay increases equal to our merit, but “nice” isn’t a quality attributed to most organizations. If you feel you deserve a significant raise in pay, you’ll probably have to ask for it.

Performance is your best bargaining chip (筹码) when you are seeking a raise. You must be able to demonstrate that you deserve a raise. Timing is also a good bargaining chip. If you can give your boss something he or she needs (a new client or a sizable contract, for example) just before merit pay decisions are b
eing made, you are more likely to get the raise you want.

Use information as a bargaining chip too. Find out what you are worth on the open market. What will someone else pay for your services?

Go into the negotiations prepared to place your chips on the table at the appropriate time and prepared to use communication style to guide the direction of the interaction.
