Here is a story told about an American general who was a very (11) important figure in the American army during the First World War. Everybody in the United States knew him and many people wished to have a picture or something of his in their homes.
Soon after the war the general returned to Washington. One day he went to a dentist and had six teeth (12) pulled out. A week later the general heard that his teeth were being sold out in curiosity shops at $$5 each. On each of the teeth there was a label with the name of the general and words: “Buy these teeth an
d show them to your friends at home.” The general got angry. He (13) rushed to his office and ordered six officers to go around the city and buy all his teeth.
The officers went out and visited every curiosity shop in the capital. They were (14) away from the office all day. In the evening they returned and put on the table (15) in front of the general the teeth they had bought. They had collected 175 teeth.

Sometimes one invention leads to many others. As people use a new product, changes are made to it. This has certainly happened with computers.
The first computers were used around 1950. They were very large and expensive. They (11) filled whole rooms. A single unit cost (12) millions of dollars.
Then came changes and improvements. Scientists studied each part of the computer. Through their work, both the size and cost of the units were greatly reduced. Data can now be (13) stored on tiny chips and some computers are even small enough to be held in your hand. Scientists are now trying to find a way to (14) communicate with computers through speech rather than through keyboards.
The invention is still changing. (15) Its effect on our lives can only grow with each improvement.

Holidays in the United States usually occur at least once a month. Most months have a national holiday that has been (11) arranged to be celebrated on Monday. These holidays are celebrated on Monday so that workers may have 3-day weekends – that is, Saturday, Sunday and Monday – in order to rest or travel or do things with their families. (12) Major holidays in the United States include New Year’s Day, Christmas Day and the day remembered for the first settlers of the United States, Thanksgiving Day. During these holidays most businesses close and workers stay at home to celebrate with their families.
Vacation can be from 2 weeks a year to 4 weeks a year. This usually depends on how long you’ve been working for a company, what type of (13) position you have, whether you have a very high and important position and whether you can find someone to replace you. (14) In this case, you might take a few days at a time (15) rather than take one month all at once. Usually the more time you spend working for a company, the more time you get for vacation.

In many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called “Bike for a Better City”. They say that if more people ride bicycles to work there will be (11) fewer automobiles in the business area of the city and thus less dirty air from car (12) engines.
For several years they have been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. They want the city to paint (13) special lanes – for bicycles only – on some of the main streets, because riding bikes in the same lanes as cars may cause (14) accidents. But no bicycle lanes have been painted yet. Not everyone thinks they are a good idea. Taxi drivers say it will slow traffic. Some stores owners say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too (15) far from the business area to travel by bike.

Thanksgiving Day is one of the oldest American holidays. It is celebrated on the (9) fourth Thursday of November. In my family, we always go to my grandmother’s house on Thanksgiving Day. And we invite some friends to (10) join us. Everyone is glad to see everyone else and there is a busy time of talking. The women soon go to the kitchen to (11) help prepare the dinner. The men settle down to watch a football game on television or to (12) discuss business. If the weather is fine, some the men go outside to (13) play ball with the children. At about four o’clock we all sit down to dinner. After dinner, no one can move and we all sit around and talk, play word games, or (14) tell jokes until it is time to go home. It is always (15) difficult to leave because Thanksgiving Day is one of the few days of the year when the whole family gets together.
Section C
Which color do you like best? Do you like red? If you do, you must enjoy life and make a good leader. You probably like sports and good food. Make sure you listen to music and read books every day. This will give your life a balance between work and rest. If you like green, it means when you decide to do something you don’t change your mind easily. You don’t like to fail in what you do. People who like blue need relax at the moment and enjoy simple relationships with others. If you like yellow best, you are an open and happy person and you enjoy change from time to time. Brown is the color of earth and nature. People who like brown are often troubled by a few problems. If you like violet, you enjoy reading books and music. You tend to live in a dream world and then feel sad when you see reality. So colors can tell you a lot about yourself. Which color do you like best now?
