What is the standard of success?
By the
inspiration of the era wave of “nationwide
enterprise-starting”, many aspiring youth
have
the dream to become successful people. But before
getting a
thought about this question: what is
the standard to determine a person success or not
in the end?
1. What is success?
“Success” is a fashion calling word, which is
commonly used in the society and media
nowadays. When it comes to successful people,
what the mass thinks firstly is such a man who has
vast wealth. Associated with this argument is
that the media often use “value” to review some of
the
so-called “success”, whether he is a
businessman, entertainment star, sport star, or
scientist, writer,
such as Bill Gates, Steve
Jobs, Yao Ming, Fan Bingbing, Tu Youyou, Caroline,
etc. It seems that the
huge wealth is the only
sign of his success to the success people. “How
much to be worth”, however,
is only a very
superficial parlance, not enough to reflect the
connotation of “success”.
The exact meaning of

2. Wealth is not the
standard of success.
A man can really obtain
certain level of wealth rely on their own wisdom

efforts. It is only the
appendage of his success, not the standard by
which to judging whether he is
success or not.
When they cheering “successful”, they first think
about is not how much money can
be converted
into immediately, but their own idea become a
reality finally.
If we only use the wealth of
a person held to determine whether a person is
successful or not,
then everyone can efforts
to pursue their own best interests, forgetting the
ethical and legal. When a
country or society
falling into such a whirlpool, the consequence is
very serious: lack of honesty,
friendship, or
even family affection; everybody complains, but
everyone involved. The moral is

declining,
the
legal is
invalidating, and the whole society will certainly
is a mess. So Si Maqian in
the biographies of
historical records, mencius fu pian, said:

Of course, the ancient Chinese sages
didn’t simply opposed to pursuit for personal
wealth, they
advocated to earning money
through the reasonable and lawful means. As is the
proverb saying,
“The gentleman love money too,
but get it by moral way”.
If someone in
order to get money by
hook or by crook,
regardless of the moral, “to gain the wealth, but
loss the humanity”, he must
accept the
judgment of social morality and the law.
3. A person’s social status is not the
standard of success too.
Since money wealth is
not the standard to judge success, so, whether a
person’s social status
can be the standard to
judge success? The answer is clearly not.
If a
man made a great contribution for the society and
people through their own efforts, the
people
will give him a high status in society naturally.
Like money wealth, the social status is only
the external things when a man achieving
success. In some cases, someone have a certain
social
status, but it is only heritage from
their families, their parents, not by their own
wisdom and hard
work. This is a common
phenomenon, especially in the period of feudal
society of China. Although
some people stand
in the high place, but they don’t make some
beneficial things for the people and
the
nation, even become enemies of the people, or the
sinners of the nation. Such as the bad kings
and tyrants, kleptocratic courtiers and
traitorous ministers in Chinese history, they are
all this kind
of stuff. They enjoy a high
social status, but can they deserve to be called
success？
There is a concept in the mind of the
Chinese ancient intellectuals that retire from
political life
after winning tremendous
successes. They chose to abandon the resulting
social status and honor
after success in their
own career. Fan Li, for example, is such a person
in the State of Yue during the
Spring and
Autumn period. When he had helping the king Gou
Jian to beat the State of Wu and
renaissance
the state of their own, Fan Li did not stay in the
court of high rank, but choose to boat
on the
West Lake. He went to the freedom of life. This
idea is derived from “Lao zi”, it says that
“successful, become famous, bow out, the
natural law.” Li bai，a famous poet in Tang
Dynasty,
usually expressed such views in his
poems, such as “Fan Li did never love five lakes,
he only retreat
when accomplish both success
and fame.” “I would like to assist a wise emperor
and then return to

village after success”, and so on. For those

and hoping through it to enter the leadership,
whether there will be some inspiration?
4. Success should to withstand the test of
history.
To judge whether a person or a thing
is successful, it is not a simple thing can be
completed
overnight. Sometimes, it must to
accept the inspection through the history and then
became a
conclusion which cannot be changed.
This principle not only applies to natural
science, but also the
social science.
Some
of the progress of science and technology, or the
emergence of new inventions, whether
can be
called success that should need time to prove: is
it benefit the human, or bring great trouble
to we? Take the invention and usage of the
plastic bags for an example. There is no doubt
that it was
successful when plastic bags run
into the life of people for the first time, but
now it is “the worst
invention” in the world
according to the present situation. The “title” is
the UK’s guardian after

Plastic bag is extracted from oil or coal chemical
products. It is difficult to natural
degradation once produced. Deal with the white

known as a successful person when
they are alive, but was considered to be “success”
and get a
high historical evaluation through a
long period of time after they passed away. For
example, the
ancient Chinese poet Tao
Yuanming, Li Bai, and the Qing Dynasty writer Cao
Xueqin, etc. They
couldn’t harvest numerous
wealth, and didn’t get a higher social status
also. They often complain
that didn’t burn in
good times, or have no chance to use their talent;
even the basic living conditions
have no
currant sometimes. Li bai singing that
chengyi, sending out boats
on creditdown
and out. Whether from the secular view, or from
the perspective of their own
feelings, they
are not successful. But today, their creation of
literary works be nourishing
generations of
people's spiritual sustenance. Don't, they are not
successful?

standard of success is the value of life.
In
1943, American psychologist Abraham maslow,
entitled

of needs. He will be human needs like ladder from

five kinds, namely: physiological needs, security
needs, social demand,

self-actualization needs.

say that he succeeded;

corresponding economic and social benefits, we
also say
that he succeeded.
From the

called a success. Marxism thinks, the person's
value is various,
one of the most fundamental
is two aspects: self value and social value. In
brief, a man's self worth
are society for
personal satisfaction, the social value of
people's personal contribution to the society.
People's self-value and social value are
mutually unified and indivisible. In a sense,
social value is a
priority on the value of the
self. Therefore, standard judge whether a person's
success is whether he
got to realize personal
value, whether that is made for countries and
people, and not just look at
what he has
wealth and social status.
