the busy
world. Books, brain food, can keep you
company on your travel. Here are several books we
recommend that you
take on your trip.

the Road, 1957, by Jack Kerouac

3. The Stories of the

author's simple but adventurous life in the Sahara
Desert, which seems a desolate and
dull place.
The fancy natural scenery and life there, along
with theauthor's romantic and intensive emotions
will
inspire you to explore the mysterious
land. Reading the book is like participating in a
dialogue with the author,
who is sincere and
humorous.
4. Lotus,2006, by Annbaby
This
novel set in Tibet, tells three people's stories,
each with their unique characteristics. It reveals
modern

That morning, I dropped our eldest at
kindergarten and returned home to let our two
younger children play
while I worked on my
medical report. It was wonderful, but it hit me
that my career in hospital wasn't making a
difference in anyone's life. I needed
something that would stretch my limits and push me
to grow. My career
enabled me to work from
home. I could work from home, and become a
fostermother, providing safety for
(领养)
a
child who needed it desperately.
On Monday
morning, I picked up the phone and dialed the
number I had googled for the nearest Department
of Children‟ Services. The man on the other
end was receptive to my questions and explained
the next step of
training, involving eight
weeks of classes designed to prepare and educate
foster parents. We continued through all
the
classes, the home visits , background checks, and
seemingly endless steps.
Five long months
after we were approved , the phone Tang. In the

her
half-brother came to us by our request. We
now had five children under our care.
On
August 12, 2016, our family of seven walked into a
small courtroom. The children's lawyer and social
worker were there. With just a few words, our
adoption was finalized. These two amazing children
weren't going
home, because they were already
home. We are their forever family

and
they are our forever children. We may
not be
able to change the entire world, but we have
changed the world entirely for our new children.

Pigeons in London have a bad
reputation. Some people call them flying rats. And
many blame them for
causing pollution with
their droppings. But now the birds are being used
to fight another kind of pollution in this
city of 8. 5 million.
“The problem for air
pollution is that it‟s been largely ignored as an
issue for a long time,” says Andrea Lee,
who
works for the London-based environmental
organization Client Earth. “People don‟t realize
how bad it is,and
how it actually affects
their health. „„ London‟s poor air quality is
linked to nearly 10,000 early deaths a year. Lee
says, citing report released by the city
manager last year, “If people were better informed
about the pollution
they‟re breathing,” she
says,”they could pressure the government to do
something about it. „„
Nearby, on a windy hill
in London‟s Regent‟s Park, an experiment is
underway that could help-the first week
of
flights by the Pigeon Air Patrol. It all began
when Pierre Duquesnoy, the director for
DigitasLBi, a marketing
firm, won a London
Design Festival contest last year to show how a
world problem could be solved using Twitter.
Duquesnoy, from France, chose the problem of
air pollution.
“Basically, I realized how
important the problem was,v he says. “But also I
realized that most of the people
around me
didn‟t know anything about it. „„ Duquesnoy says
he wants to better measure pollution, while at the
same time making the results accessible to the
public through Twitter.
“So, “ he wondered,
“how could we go across the city quickly
collecting as much data as possible?” Drones
(
无人驾驶飞机
)were his first thought. But it‟s
illegal to fly them over London. “But pigeons can
fly above
London,right?” he says. “They live
-actually? they are Londoners as well. So, yeah, I
thought about using pigeons
equipped with
mobile apps. And we can use not just street
pigeons, but racing pigeons, because they fly
pretty
quickly and pretty low. “
So it
might be time for Londoners to have more respect
for their pigeons. The birds may just be helping
to
improve the quality of the city's air.
~

London‟s air quality from paragraph 2?

ended up spreading the germ to their cabbage. But
even some of those who did not wash the chicken
got
germs on the cabbage. And there are other
opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys:
melting and cooking.
To ensure a bird is
thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer
(
温度计
) to check that the deepest and
thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees.
Even after the meal is cooked, you aren‟t out of
the danger zone. To
keep turkeys and other
leftovers safe, experts say they should be
refrigerated after two hours.

D. Multiple methods should be applied to food
to get rid of germs.

cook a turkey safely?
30. Why did Duquesnoy
give up using drones to fly across London?
A.
Because they are too expensive

are forbidden.

for the text?
A. London‟s New Pollution

C. Clean

D. Causes of Air Pollution in

D
Food experts say washing could
spread the germs (
细菌
) on your turkey in
the kitchen sink to nearby food.
But it‟s been
a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop
washing uncooked poultry (
禽肉
). Germs that
can make
people sick are common in the body of
healthy poultry and are legally allowed to be on
raw turkey and chicken.
The assumption is that
nobody eats their poultry raw, and that thorough
cooking will kill the germ.
The do-not-wash
raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new
and perhaps hasn‟t caught on because
it goes
against the common belief that washing makes
things clean, said Chapman. Benjamin Chapman, a
study
author and food safety expert at North
Carolina State University, said the natural
tendency to wash raw poultry
goes back at
least decades when people relied more on visual
clues to spot problems with poultry. Meanwhile,
washing hands and surfaces are also important.
But food preparation is a complicated act, and
germs from poultry can be spread even if it‟s not
washed,
especially when birds are removed from
packaging.
The USDA-funded study stresses that
point. Researchers sprayed raw chicken with a
harmless strain of E.
coli (
大肠杆菌
) and
watched volunteer cooks at test kitchens. Among
those who washed their raw chicken, about
B.
Because they fly too quickly.

A. Use a thermometer to check
the temperature of the turkey.
B. Keep the
turkey away from the cabbage and refrigerator.
C. Wash hands and packages before taking out

D. Wash the turkey before it is
heated.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Students deal with many problems in their
lives and because of all of the competing things
for their attention,
it's hard to concentrate
on studying. 36 The key to effective studying
isn't cramming(
死记硬背
) or studying
longer, but studying smarter.
37 Too
many people look at studying as a necessary task,
not an enjoyment or opportunity to learn.
That's fine, but researchers have found that
how you approach something matters almost as much
as what you do.
Sometimes you can't “force”
yourself to be in the right state of mind. Aim to
think positively when you study, and
~
remind yourself of your skills and
abilities. 38 Instead of thinking, “I'm a mess.
I'll never have enough time to
study for this
exam
Memory games are methods for remembering
pieces of information using a simple connection of
common
words. Most often people get words to
form a nonsense sentence that is easy to remember.
Memory games are
helpful because you use more
of your brain to remember visual and active images
than you do to remember just a
list of items.
39
A lot of people make the mistake of
studying in a place that really isn't helpful to
concentrating. 40 The
library, a corner in
a study hall, or a quiet coffee house are good
places to check out. Make sure to choose the quiet
areas in these places, not the loud, central
gathering areas. Finding an ideal study place is
important, because it's
the one you can
reliably count on for the next few years.
A.
Avoid terrible thinking.
B. Avoid comparing
yourself with others.
C. A noisy place makes
for a poor study area.
D. Using more of your
brain means better memory.
E. Having a right
attitude is important to study smarter.
F. You
need more effective study habits for better
grades.
G. Every person is unique in their way
of effective learning.
