二、阅读理解(每题2分,共30分)

Passage 1

In the United States there was an unusual tale telling of the daughter of a mechanic. One day while walking along the bank of a lake, the girl happened to see 20 eggs laid by a wild goose(鹅). After some time the girl realized the mother would not return to her eggs and she decided to take them home. There she carefully placed the eggs in the heat of a lamp. Several days later the eggs broke and the baby geese came into the world.

Geese are known to take the first living thing they see as their mother. Thus, to these young geese, the girl was their mother.

As they grew, the girl was able to lead her birds to run across the grass, but she could not teach them to fly. The girl became increasingly worried about this, both when awake and in her dreams. Later, she had an idea. She would pilot a plane to guide them in flight. She asked her father for a plane and he assembled a small aircraft for her.

Caring about her safety, the father decided to pilot the plane himself. However, the birds didn’t recognize or follow him, and instead slept in the grass.

They say that the quality of life is as important as life itself, and that people should not be forced to go on living when conditions of life have become unbearable. They say that people should be allowed to die with dignity (尊严) and to decide when they want to die. Passage 3

When companies do business overseas, they come in contact with people from different cultures. These individuals often speak a different language and have their own particular custom and manners. These differences can create problems. For example, in France, business meetings begin promptly at the designated time and everyone is expected to be there. Foreign business people who are tardy are often left outside to be kept waiting as a means of letting them know the importance of promptness. Unless one is aware of such expected behaviors he may end up insulting the people with whom he hopes to establish trade relations.

A second traditional problem is that of monetary conversions. For example, if a transaction is conducted with Russia, payment may be made in rubles. Of course, this currency is of little value to the American firm. It is, therefore, necessary to convert the foreign currency to American dollars. How much are these Russian rubies worth in terms of dollars? This conversion rate is determined by every market, where the currencies of countries are bought and sold. Thus there is an established rate, although it will often fluctuate from day to day. For example, the ruble may be worth 0.75on Monday and 0.72on Tuesday
because of an announced wheat shortage in Russia. In addition, there is the dilemma associated with converting at 0.72. Some financial institutions may be unwilling to pay this price, feeling that the ruble will sink much lower over the next week. As a result, conversion may finally come at 0.69. These "losses" must be accepted by the company as one of the costs of doing business overseas.

A third unique problem is trade barriers. For one reason or another, all countries impose trade barriers on certain goods crossing their borders. Some trade barriers are directly related to exports. For example, the United States permits strategic military material to be shipped abroad only after government permission has been obtained. Most trade barriers, however, are designed to restrict imports. Two of the most common import barriers are quotas and tariffs.

1. What is the relationship between culture and international trade?

A. Cultures in different countries may help establish trade relations.

B. Companies can do business overseas without paying attention to different cultures.

C. Misunderstanding in international trade may result from different cultures.

D. Different cultures can help people understand each other better.

2. What is done toward business people who are late in France?

A. They are often left outdoors waiting.

B. They are often insulted.

C. They often suffer from coldness.

D. They often feel angry.

3. According to the passage, conversion rates____________

A. are determined by financial institutions.

A. vary from day to day.

B. are agreed upon by two trading countries.

C. are always the same.

4. What can we learn about trade barriers?

A. Due to trade barriers, all goods can be shipped abroad from all countries.

A. In US strategic military material can be exported freely.

B. There are more import barriers than export barriers.

C. There are no barriers at all.

5. Which of the following are likely to be discussed in the next paragraph?

A. Quotas and tariffs.

A. Measures to break down trade barriers.

B. Reasons for imposing trading barriers.

D. Measures to set up more trade barriers.
