Agnes de
Mille was a dancer and a choreographer
(
编舞
). Early in her career, de Mille had
created the choreography for a ballet called
Three Virgins and a Devil. She thought it was good
work,
but nobody made much of it.
A few
years later, de Mille choreographed a ballet named
Rodeo. Again, she thought her work
was solid,
but it resulted in little commercial fame.
Then, in 1943, de Mille choreographed
Oklahoma!, a musical show that enjoyed nearly
instant
success. In the coming years,
Oklahoma! would run for an incredible 2,212
performances, both
around the nation and
abroad. In 1955, the film version won an Academy
Award.
But the success of Oklahoma! didn’t
bring her much happiness. She thought that her
work on
Oklahoma! was only average compared to
some of her other creations. She later said,
“After the
opening of Oklahoma!, I suddenly
had unexpected success for a work I thought was
only fairly good,

after years of neglect for work I
thought was fine. I began to think that perhaps my
entire scale of
values was untrustworthy. I
talked to Martha.”
Martha was Martha Graham,
perhaps the most influential dance choreographer
of the 20th
century. Although not as well-
known by the general public, Graham has been
compared to other
creative geniuses like
Picasso or Frank Lloyd Wright.
During their
conversation, de Mille told Martha Graham about
her frustration. “I confessed that
I had a
burning desire to be excellent, but no faith that
I could be.”
Graham responded by saying:
“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy,
a quickening that is translated through you into
action, and because there is only one of you
in all of time, this expression is unique. And if
you block
it, it will never exist through any
other medium and it will be lost. The world will
not have it. It is not
your business to
determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how
it compares with other
expressions. It is your
business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to
keep the channel open.”
34. What can be
learned about de Mille’s ballet named Rodeo?
A. It earned her a large fortune.
B. It
didn’t enjoy much success.
C. It made her
rise to fame overnight.
D. It laid a solid
foundation for her career.
35. How did de
Mille feel about the great success of the musical
Oklahoma!?
A. Relieved. B. Ashamed. C.
Confused. D. Proud.
36. Picasso and Frank
Lloyd Wright were mentioned to suggest that Martha
Graham ______.
A. had been influenced
greatly by them
B. enjoyed the same
popularity as them
C. was the most
influential artist in her field
D. was
outstanding in visual arts and architecture
37. Which of the following statements best
represents Graham’s words in this passage?
A. Comparing with others prevents you from
maintaining uniqueness.
B. Your action
reveals the inner landscape, which is the soul of
music.
C. Choosing to be positive is going
to determine how you live your life.
D. You
should always keep yourself open to the urges that
motivate you.
C
As humanity has got
richer, animals’ roles have changed. People need
their services less than
before. Fewer wolves
and thieves meant less demand for dogs for
protection; the internal
6
combustion engine (
内燃机
) made
horses unneeded; modern sanitation (
卫生设备
)
kept rats in
check and made cats less useful.
No longer necessities, domestic animals became
luxuries.
Petkeeping seems to kick in when
household incomes rise above roughly $$5,000. It is
booming.
The trend is not a new one.
Archaeologists (
考古学家
) have found
10,000-year-old graves in
which dogs and
people are buried together. Some cultures — such
as in Scandinavia, where dogs
have long been
both working dogs and companions — have kept pets
for thousands of years. But
these days the
pet-keeping urge has spread even to parts of the
world which have no tradition of
sinking into
a comfortable chair with a furry creature.
The
pet business is growing even faster than pet
numbers, because people are spending more
and
more money on them. No longer are they food-waste-
recyclers, fed with the remains that fall
from
their masters’ tables. Pet-food shelves are full
of delicacies crafted to satisfy a range of
appetites, including ice cream for dogs and
foods for pets that are old, diabetic or suffer
from
sensitive digestion; a number of Internet
services offer food, tailored to the pet’s
individual tastes.
In the business this is
called “pet humanisation”—the tendency of pet
owners to treat their
pets as part of the
family. This is evident in the names given to
dogs, which have evolved from
Fido, Rex and
Spot to—in America—Bella, Lucy and Max. It is
evident in the growing market for
pet
clothing, pet grooming and pet hotels.
People
still assume that pets must be working for
humanity in some way, perhaps making
people
healthier or less anxious. But the evidence for
that is weak. Rather, new research suggests
that dogs have evolved those irresistible
“puppy-dog eyes” precisely to affect human
emotions. It
has worked. The species that once
enslaved others now works very hard to pay for the
care of its
pets. Sentimental (
多愁善感的
)
Americans often refer to themselves not as cat-
owners but as the
cat’s “mommy” or “daddy”.
South Koreans go one further, describing
themselves as cat “butlers”.
Watch an unlucky
dog-walker trailing “his” hound (
猎犬
),
plastic bag in hand to pick up its mess,
and
you have to wonder: who’s in charge now?
38. Which of the following trends is NOT TRUE
according to the passage?
A. People’s needs
for animal services are decreasing.
B. Both
the pet number and the pet business are growing.
C. Pets are increasingly making their owners
less anxious.
D. Pet foods are more various
and customized than before.

39. Which of the following is referred
to as evidence of “pet humanization”?
A. Human
beings’ ever rising urge for pet-keeping.
B.
Pets’ roles as both working staff and companions.
C. Pets’ inbuilt ability to affect emotions of
their owners.
D. The names given to pets in
American families nowadays.
40. Which of the
following statements is the author most likely to
agree with?
A. Some pet owners spend too much
money on their pets.
B. Human beings are
getting much benefit from their pets.
C. Pets
should be treated as equals of their human
masters.
D. Pet-keeping is still restricted
within certain parts of the world.

of the following might be the best title of the
passage?
A. Who Owns Whom
B. The Urge for Pet-keeping
D. Love Me,
Love My Dog C. The Changing Roles of Animals

Learning a second language is tricky at
any age and it only gets tougher the longer you
wait
to open that dusty French book. Now, in a
new study, scientists have pinpointed the exact
age at
which your chances of reaching fluency
in a second language seem to plummet: 10.
The
study, published in the journal Cognition, found
that it’s “nearly impossible” for
language
learners to reach native-level fluency if they
start learning a second tongue after 10. But
that doesn’t seem to be because language
skills go downhill. “It turns out you’re still
learning fast.
It’s just that you run out of
time, because your ability to learn starts
dropping at around 17 or 18
years old,” says
study co-author Joshua Hartshorne, an assistant
professor of psychology at Boston
College.
Kids may be better than adults at learning new
languages for many reasons. Children’s brains
are more plastic than those of adults, meaning
they’re better able to adapt and respond to new
information. “All learning involves the brain
changing,” Hartshorne says, “and children’s brains
seem to be a lot more skilled at changing.”
8
Kids may also be more
willing to try new things (and to potentially look
foolish in the
process) than adults are. Their
comparatively new grasp on their native tongue may
also be
advantageous. Unlike adults, who tend
to default (
默认
) to the rules and patterns
of their first
language, kids may be able to
approach a new one with a blank slate
(
石板
).
These findings may seem
discouraging, but it was heartening for scientists
to learn that the
critical period for fluent
language acquisition might be longer than they
previously thought. Some
scientists believed
that the brief window closes shortly after birth,
while others stretched it only to
early
adolescence. Compared to those estimates, 17 or 18
— when language learning ability starts
to
drop off — seems relatively old.
“People fared
better when they learned by immersion
(
沉浸
), rather than simply in a
classroom. And moving to a place where your
desired language is spoken is the best way to
learn
as an adult. If that’s not an option,
you can mimic an immersive environment by finding
ways to
have conversations with native
speakers in their own communities,” Hartshorne
says. By doing so,
it’s possible to become
conversationally proficient — even without the
advantage of a child’s
brain.
42. The
underlined word “plummet” in Paragraph 1 is
closest in meaning to “__________”.
A.
decrease B. rise C. end D. vary
43. What
can be inferred from Joshua Hartshorne’s words?
A. Children are too young to grasp a
second language.
B. Age 10-18 is the best
time to learn a second language.
C. Adults
go beyond the critical period for learning a
second language.
D. Communicating with
native speakers enables you to master all the
language skills.
44. Why adults can’t reach
native-level fluency in a second language?
A. Adults are less influenced by their mother
tongues.
B. Adults spend more time
responding to new information.
C. Adults
are only too willing to experience something
awkward in the process.
D. Adults prefer
an immersive environment to a classroom in
learning a second
language.
45. The
passage is mainly about __________.
9
A. the best age to learn a second
language
B. the approaches to learning a
second language
C. why kids learn a second
language more easily than adults
D.
whether adults can learn a second language like
their younger selves

Anxiety Disorders
Everybody worries or
feels nervous from time to time. 46 But for
people with
anxiety disorders, those fears and
worries aren’t temporary. Their anxiety persists,
and can even
get worse over time.
Anxiety
disorders can severely impair a person’s ability
to function at work, school and in
social
situations. 47 Fortunately, though, there
are effective treatments for anxiety.
10
In some cases, medications have a role
in treating anxiety disorders. Yet research shows
behavioral treatment, alone or in combination
with medication, is a highly effective treatment
for
most people with an anxiety disorder.
Understanding Anxiety
Anxiety disorders
are common in both adults and children. About 18
percent of U.S.
adults and 25 percent of
adolescents age 13 to 18 will experience anxiety,
according to the
National Institute of Mental
Health. 48
There are several major types
of anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety
disorder, panic
disorder, phobias, social
anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder,
post-traumatic stress
disorder, etc.
Seeing a Psychologist About Anxiety Disorders
Though many types of anxiety disorders exist,
research suggests that most are driven by
similar underlying processes. People with
anxiety disorders tend to become easily
overwhelmed
by their emotions, and they tend
to have particularly negative reactions to those
unpleasant
feelings and situations.
49
Unfortunately, avoidance can backfire and actually
feed the anxiety.
Psychologists are trained in
diagnosing anxiety disorders and teaching patients
healthier,
more effective ways to cope. A form
of psychotherapy known as cognitive-behavioral
therapy
(CBT) is highly effective at treating
anxiety disorders. Through CBT, psychologists help
patients
learn to identify and manage the
factors that contribute to their anxiety.
Psychotherapy for Anxiety Disorders: What to
Expect
Psychotherapy is a collaborative
process, where psychologists and patients work
together to
identify specific concerns and
develop concrete skills and techniques for coping
with anxiety.
50 However, psychologists
won't push patients into such scenarios until
they’re sure they have
the skills they need to
effectively confront their fears. Psychologists
sometimes use other
approaches to treat
anxiety disorders in addition to CBT, among which
group psychotherapy and
family therapy are two
effective ways.
A. Anxiety disorders are
very treatable.
B. Anxiety is a normal human
reaction to stressful situations.
11
C. Anxiety can also interfere with a
person’s relationships with family members and
friends.
D. About 4 percent of adults, and
nearly 6 percent of teens, have anxiety disorders
classified as
severe.
E. Often, people
try to cope with those negative reactions by
avoiding situations or experiences
that make
them anxious.
F. Patients can expect to
practice their new skills outside of sessions to
manage anxiety in
situations that might make
them uncomfortable.
G. People with anxiety
worry about a number of concerns, such as health
problems or finances,
and may have a
general sense that something bad is going to
happen.

Last week, my classmates and I
participated in an activity themed on Joint

our districts, aiming to help citizens to fight
with the
COVID-19(coronavirus) pandemic.
We received a notice in our WeChat group chat
on Monday morning. Then we had a heated
discussion about what our topic should be for
this entry. After a while, we chose Heroes in the
War
against COVID -19 as our topic.
Divided into three different groups, we
swiftly submerged ourselves into preparation.
Every
group worked so hard and each one in the
team also performed their own functions, including
collecting available information from
Internet, TV programs, radio and other social
media. With

All preparation
was to the final work.
It
was the time to combine the first group’s material
together. Then the third group began to
create
the poster with the poem and the prose from group
one and the publicizing picture from
group
two. With our joint efforts, an attractive poster
came out. It was of great excitement to see
our perfect-look entry.
The final step was
to submit our entry on WeChat via a WeChat

the exciting moment, we posted a selfie with our
poster on Moments and as
expected, this post
received a number of likes.

Text 1
M: Hi, Julie. I’m ringing to remind
you that I’ll pick you up tonight.
W: Thank
you. When will you come?
M: The film doesn’t
start until 8:15. I’ll leave here at 7:20. It’ll
take 20 minutes to get to your
house.
Text 2
W: Don’t forget to write to me,
Jason.
M: I won’t. But let me make sure I have
the right address. Is it 42 Eastdrive Birmingham?
W: That’s right. By the way, my office number
has changed since I began to work at Morrison.
M: Has it? And tell me what it is, then.
Text 3
M: Sorry, Professor Mills, I am
late. I just finished at the student medical
center. I twisted my
ankle when playing soccer
this morning. It took longer than I expected to
see the doctor.
W: That’s okay. Don’t worry
about it, James. So let’s get started.
Text 4
W: The admission price of the
gallery is ten dollars per person. I think that’s
pretty expensive for a
single exhibit.
M:
But if we have student cards, we can get in for
two.
W: Really? Let’s have a try.
Text 5
M: Hello, Mary, why are you standing here in
the cold wind?
25
W: I’m
waiting for a bus, but the buses are full at this
time of the day.
M: Where are you going? You
must take a bus from the other side of the street
to go home.
W: I’m not going home now. I’m
going for a walk in the park. I always like going
for a walk
before lunch.
Text 6
W: Can I help you?
M: Yes, you can
actually. We came back from Bermuda last night.
W: Did you have a nice time?
M: No, I
didn’t. My wife and I are both very angry.
W:
What was the problem?
M: Well, to start with,
we had to pay £20 extra cash for airport tax. But
it says here in the
agreement that airport tax
is included.
W: Oh yes, so it does.
M: And
our room didn’t have a sea view. We paid extra for
a sea view, but all we got was a view
of the
car park at the back of the hotel.
W: Oh dear.
This is very serious. I think we should fill out a
form. Now please tell me your name.

M: I had a big argument with David
yesterday. I hope he’s not still mad at me.
W:
What did you argue about?
M: He borrowed some
money from me. But when I needed it back, he said
he didn’t have the
money yet.
W: Well, he
should pay it back.
M: Yes, but I got angry
with him too quickly. He probably thought I
mistrusted him.
26
W: Did you
lend him a lot of money?
M: Not much. I had to
pay an unexpected bill, so I needed the money
back.
W: Well, close friends sometimes have
disagreements. It’s nothing unusual. Why not talk
to him
about it? I bet he will understand.
M: I guess you’re right. We should patch
things up. I don’t want to ruin a long friendship.
Text 8
M: The summer vacation is
coming. I am looking forward to it.
W: It will
be really wonderful.
M: Yes, I can’t wait.
W: Do you have any plans for the holidays?
M: I’m thinking of learning diving. What about
you?
W: That sounds interesting, but which
center are you planning to go to? I don’t know of
any.
M: There is a diving school set up by
someone who used to be a student at our school.
It’s
somewhere in New Jersey.
W: I hear
that diving classes are expensive.
M: Yes, but
I’ve saved some money for this.
W: Then you go
ahead. I don’t think I can afford it. I may just
stay at home, getting fatter and
fatter.
M: Do go out, or you will not recognize
yourself. You have already gained a lot of weight.
W: Maybe you are right.
Text 9

Text 10
M: Hello.
This is the Medical Emergency Center. Can I help
you?
W: Yes, this is an emergency. Please help
me!
M: OK, OK, just try to calm down, Miss.
And can you tell me what’s happened?
W: Oh,
yes, my brother Adam fell down the stairs on
Monday and slept in bed for two days but
now
he is having a heavy headache.
M: Did he see
the doctor on Monday after he fell down?
W:
Yes, he’s been taking medicine but now he is very
painful. I’m so worried about him.
M: Please
give me your name and address so I can send an
ambulance.
W: I’m Linda Johnson, J-O-H-N-S-
O-N. We’re at 226 Main Street. It’s the red house
near the
corner of Lake Avenue.
M: Can I
have your phone number?
W: 8756 3249.
M:
Ok, Miss Johnson, the ambulance should be there
within fifteen minutes.
W: Then, what should I
do now?
M: It’s possible that your brother may
have injured his head, so it’s very important that
you do not
try to move him. Other than that,
just try to keep calm and wait for the ambulance
to arrive.
W: I’ll do that. Thank you very
much! Please hurry!

Agnes de
Mille was a dancer and a choreographer
(
编舞
). Early in her career, de Mille had
created the choreography for a ballet called
Three Virgins and a Devil. She thought it was good
work,
but nobody made much of it.
A few
years later, de Mille choreographed a ballet named
Rodeo. Again, she thought her work
was solid,
but it resulted in little commercial fame.
Then, in 1943, de Mille choreographed
Oklahoma!, a musical show that enjoyed nearly
instant
success. In the coming years,
Oklahoma! would run for an incredible 2,212
performances, both
around the nation and
abroad. In 1955, the film version won an Academy
Award.
But the success of Oklahoma! didn’t
bring her much happiness. She thought that her
work on
Oklahoma! was only average compared to
some of her other creations. She later said,
“After the
opening of Oklahoma!, I suddenly
had unexpected success for a work I thought was
only fairly good,

B
after years of neglect for work I
thought was fine. I began to think that perhaps my
entire scale of
values was untrustworthy. I
talked to Martha.”
Martha was Martha Graham,
perhaps the most influential dance choreographer
of the 20th
century. Although not as well-
known by the general public, Graham has been
compared to other
creative geniuses like
Picasso or Frank Lloyd Wright.
During their
conversation, de Mille told Martha Graham about
her frustration. “I confessed that
I had a
burning desire to be excellent, but no faith that
I could be.”
Graham responded by saying:
“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy,
a quickening that is translated through you into
action, and because there is only one of you
in all of time, this expression is unique. And if
you block
it, it will never exist through any
other medium and it will be lost. The world will
not have it. It is not
your business to
determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how
it compares with other
expressions. It is your
business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to
keep the channel open.”
34. What can be
learned about de Mille’s ballet named Rodeo?
A. It earned her a large fortune.
B. It
didn’t enjoy much success.
C. It made her
rise to fame overnight.
D. It laid a solid
foundation for her career.
35. How did de
Mille feel about the great success of the musical
Oklahoma!?
A. Relieved. B. Ashamed. C.
Confused. D. Proud.
36. Picasso and Frank
Lloyd Wright were mentioned to suggest that Martha
Graham ______.
A. had been influenced
greatly by them
B. enjoyed the same
popularity as them
C. was the most
influential artist in her field
D. was
outstanding in visual arts and architecture
37. Which of the following statements best
represents Graham’s words in this passage?
A. Comparing with others prevents you from
maintaining uniqueness.
B. Your action
reveals the inner landscape, which is the soul of
music.
C. Choosing to be positive is going
to determine how you live your life.
D. You
should always keep yourself open to the urges that
motivate you.
C
As humanity has got
richer, animals’ roles have changed. People need
their services less than
before. Fewer wolves
and thieves meant less demand for dogs for
protection; the internal

combustion engine (
内燃机
) made
horses unneeded; modern sanitation (
卫生设备
)
kept rats in
check and made cats less useful.
No longer necessities, domestic animals became
luxuries.
Petkeeping seems to kick in when
household incomes rise above roughly $$5,000. It is
booming.
The trend is not a new one.
Archaeologists (
考古学家
) have found
10,000-year-old graves in
which dogs and
people are buried together. Some cultures — such
as in Scandinavia, where dogs
have long been
both working dogs and companions — have kept pets
for thousands of years. But
these days the
pet-keeping urge has spread even to parts of the
world which have no tradition of
sinking into
a comfortable chair with a furry creature.
The
pet business is growing even faster than pet
numbers, because people are spending more
and
more money on them. No longer are they food-waste-
recyclers, fed with the remains that fall
from
their masters’ tables. Pet-food shelves are full
of delicacies crafted to satisfy a range of
appetites, including ice cream for dogs and
foods for pets that are old, diabetic or suffer
from
sensitive digestion; a number of Internet
services offer food, tailored to the pet’s
individual tastes.
In the business this is
called “pet humanisation”—the tendency of pet
owners to treat their
pets as part of the
family. This is evident in the names given to
dogs, which have evolved from
Fido, Rex and
Spot to—in America—Bella, Lucy and Max. It is
evident in the growing market for
pet
clothing, pet grooming and pet hotels.
People
still assume that pets must be working for
humanity in some way, perhaps making
people
healthier or less anxious. But the evidence for
that is weak. Rather, new research suggests
that dogs have evolved those irresistible
“puppy-dog eyes” precisely to affect human
emotions. It
has worked. The species that once
enslaved others now works very hard to pay for the
care of its
pets. Sentimental (

Americans often refer to themselves not as cat-
owners but as the
cat’s “mommy” or “daddy”.
South Koreans go one further, describing
themselves as cat “butlers”.

dog-walker trailing “his” hound (

and
you have to wonder: who’s in charge now?

Learning a second language is tricky at
any age and it only gets tougher the longer you
wait
to open that dusty French book. Now, in a
new study, scientists have pinpointed the exact
age at
which your chances of reaching fluency
in a second language seem to plummet: 10.
The
study, published in the journal Cognition, found
that it’s “nearly impossible” for
language
learners to reach native-level fluency if they
start learning a second tongue after 10. But
that doesn’t seem to be because language
skills go downhill. “It turns out you’re still
learning fast.
It’s just that you run out of
time, because your ability to learn starts
dropping at around 17 or 18
years old,” says
study co-author Joshua Hartshorne, an assistant
professor of psychology at Boston
College.
Kids may be better than adults at learning new
languages for many reasons. Children’s brains
are more plastic than those of adults, meaning
they’re better able to adapt and respond to new
information. “All learning involves the brain
changing,” Hartshorne says, “and children’s brains
seem to be a lot more skilled at changing.”
8
Kids may also be more
willing to try new things (and to potentially look
foolish in the
process) than adults are. Their
comparatively new grasp on their native tongue may
also be
advantageous. Unlike adults, who tend
to default (
默认
) to the rules and patterns
of their first
language, kids may be able to
approach a new one with a blank slate
(
石板
).
These findings may seem
discouraging, but it was heartening for scientists
to learn that the
critical period for fluent
language acquisition might be longer than they
previously thought. Some
scientists believed
that the brief window closes shortly after birth,
while others stretched it only to
early
adolescence. Compared to those estimates, 17 or 18
— when language learning ability starts
to
drop off — seems relatively old.
“People fared
better when they learned by immersion
(
沉浸
), rather than simply in a
classroom. And moving to a place where your
desired language is spoken is the best way to
learn
as an adult. If that’s not an option,
you can mimic an immersive environment by finding
ways to
have conversations with native
speakers in their own communities,” Hartshorne
says. By doing so,
it’s possible to become
conversationally proficient — even without the
advantage of a child’s
brain.
42. The
underlined word “plummet” in Paragraph 1 is
closest in meaning to “__________”.
A.
decrease B. rise C. end D. vary
43. What
can be inferred from Joshua Hartshorne’s words?
A. Children are too young to grasp a
second language.
B. Age 10-18 is the best
time to learn a second language.
C. Adults
go beyond the critical period for learning a
second language.
D. Communicating with
native speakers enables you to master all the
language skills.
44. Why adults can’t reach
native-level fluency in a second language?
A. Adults are less influenced by their mother
tongues.
B. Adults spend more time
responding to new information.
C. Adults
are only too willing to experience something
awkward in the process.
D. Adults prefer
an immersive environment to a classroom in
learning a second
language.
45. The
passage is mainly about __________.
9
A. the best age to learn a second
language
B. the approaches to learning a
second language
C. why kids learn a second
language more easily than adults
D.
whether adults can learn a second language like

Anxiety Disorders
Everybody worries or
feels nervous from time to time. 46 But for
people with
anxiety disorders, those fears and
worries aren’t temporary. Their anxiety persists,
and can even
get worse over time.
Anxiety
disorders can severely impair a person’s ability
to function at work, school and in
social
situations. 47 Fortunately, though, there
are effective treatments for anxiety.
10
In some cases, medications have a role
in treating anxiety disorders. Yet research shows
behavioral treatment, alone or in combination
with medication, is a highly effective treatment
for
most people with an anxiety disorder.
Understanding Anxiety
Anxiety disorders
are common in both adults and children. About 18
percent of U.S.
adults and 25 percent of
adolescents age 13 to 18 will experience anxiety,
according to the
National Institute of Mental
Health. 48
There are several major types
of anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety
disorder, panic
disorder, phobias, social
anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder,
post-traumatic stress
disorder, etc.
Seeing a Psychologist About Anxiety Disorders
Though many types of anxiety disorders exist,
research suggests that most are driven by
similar underlying processes. People with
anxiety disorders tend to become easily
overwhelmed
by their emotions, and they tend
to have particularly negative reactions to those
unpleasant
feelings and situations.
49
Unfortunately, avoidance can backfire and actually
feed the anxiety.
Psychologists are trained in
diagnosing anxiety disorders and teaching patients
healthier,
more effective ways to cope. A form
of psychotherapy known as cognitive-behavioral
therapy
(CBT) is highly effective at treating
anxiety disorders. Through CBT, psychologists help
patients
learn to identify and manage the
factors that contribute to their anxiety.
Psychotherapy for Anxiety Disorders: What to
Expect
Psychotherapy is a collaborative
process, where psychologists and patients work
together to
identify specific concerns and
develop concrete skills and techniques for coping
with anxiety.
50 However, psychologists
won't push patients into such scenarios until
they’re sure they have
the skills they need to
effectively confront their fears. Psychologists
sometimes use other
approaches to treat
anxiety disorders in addition to CBT, among which
group psychotherapy and
family therapy are two
effective ways.
A. Anxiety disorders are
very treatable.
B. Anxiety is a normal human
reaction to stressful situations.
11
C. Anxiety can also interfere with a
person’s relationships with family members and
friends.
D. About 4 percent of adults, and
nearly 6 percent of teens, have anxiety disorders
classified as
severe.
E. Often, people
try to cope with those negative reactions by
avoiding situations or experiences
that make
them anxious.
F. Patients can expect to
practice their new skills outside of sessions to
manage anxiety in
situations that might make
them uncomfortable.
G. People with anxiety
worry about a number of concerns, such as health
problems or finances,
and may have a
general sense that something bad is going to
happen.

Text 1
M: Hi, Julie. I’m ringing to remind
you that I’ll pick you up tonight.
W: Thank
you. When will you come?
M: The film doesn’t
start until 8:15. I’ll leave here at 7:20. It’ll
take 20 minutes to get to your
house.
Text 2
W: Don’t forget to write to me,
Jason.
M: I won’t. But let me make sure I have
the right address. Is it 42 Eastdrive Birmingham?
W: That’s right. By the way, my office number
has changed since I began to work at Morrison.
M: Has it? And tell me what it is, then.
Text 3
M: Sorry, Professor Mills, I am
late. I just finished at the student medical
center. I twisted my
ankle when playing soccer
this morning. It took longer than I expected to
see the doctor.
W: That’s okay. Don’t worry
about it, James. So let’s get started.
Text 4
W: The admission price of the
gallery is ten dollars per person. I think that’s
pretty expensive for a
single exhibit.
M:
But if we have student cards, we can get in for
two.
W: Really? Let’s have a try.
Text 5
M: Hello, Mary, why are you standing here in
the cold wind?
25
W: I’m
waiting for a bus, but the buses are full at this
time of the day.
M: Where are you going? You
must take a bus from the other side of the street
to go home.
W: I’m not going home now. I’m
going for a walk in the park. I always like going
for a walk
before lunch.
Text 6
W: Can I help you?
M: Yes, you can
actually. We came back from Bermuda last night.
W: Did you have a nice time?
M: No, I
didn’t. My wife and I are both very angry.
W:
What was the problem?
M: Well, to start with,
we had to pay £20 extra cash for airport tax. But
it says here in the
agreement that airport tax
is included.
W: Oh yes, so it does.
M: And
our room didn’t have a sea view. We paid extra for
a sea view, but all we got was a view
of the
car park at the back of the hotel.
W: Oh dear.
This is very serious. I think we should fill out a
form. Now please tell me your name.

M: I had a big argument with David
yesterday. I hope he’s not still mad at me.
W:
What did you argue about?
M: He borrowed some
money from me. But when I needed it back, he said
he didn’t have the
money yet.
W: Well, he
should pay it back.
M: Yes, but I got angry
with him too quickly. He probably thought I
mistrusted him.
26
W: Did you
lend him a lot of money?
M: Not much. I had to
pay an unexpected bill, so I needed the money
back.
W: Well, close friends sometimes have
disagreements. It’s nothing unusual. Why not talk
to him
about it? I bet he will understand.
M: I guess you’re right. We should patch
things up. I don’t want to ruin a long friendship.
Text 8
M: The summer vacation is
coming. I am looking forward to it.
W: It will
be really wonderful.
M: Yes, I can’t wait.
W: Do you have any plans for the holidays?
M: I’m thinking of learning diving. What about
you?
W: That sounds interesting, but which
center are you planning to go to? I don’t know of
any.
M: There is a diving school set up by
someone who used to be a student at our school.
It’s
somewhere in New Jersey.
W: I hear
that diving classes are expensive.
M: Yes, but
I’ve saved some money for this.
W: Then you go
ahead. I don’t think I can afford it. I may just
stay at home, getting fatter and
fatter.
M: Do go out, or you will not recognize
yourself. You have already gained a lot of weight.
W: Maybe you are right.

me!
M: OK, OK, just try to calm down, Miss.
And can you tell me what’s happened?
W: Oh,
yes, my brother Adam fell down the stairs on
Monday and slept in bed for two days but
now
he is having a heavy headache.
M: Did he see
the doctor on Monday after he fell down?
W:
Yes, he’s been taking medicine but now he is very
painful. I’m so worried about him.
M: Please
give me your name and address so I can send an
ambulance.
W: I’m Linda Johnson, J-O-H-N-S-
O-N. We’re at 226 Main Street. It’s the red house
near the
corner of Lake Avenue.
M: Can I
have your phone number?
W: 8756 3249.
M:
Ok, Miss Johnson, the ambulance should be there
within fifteen minutes.
W: Then, what should I
do now?
M: It’s possible that your brother may
have injured his head, so it’s very important that
you do not
try to move him. Other than that,
just try to keep calm and wait for the ambulance
to arrive.
W: I’ll do that. Thank you very
much! Please hurry!
