and informed him gravely that she did not love him.” It is known that Marjorie keep making affairs with lots of men however again sometimes give Warren “something sweet” to make him stay crazy about her. It was a trap for Warren and Warren was willing to stay in this trap because Marjorie is still an ideal woman in his mind. Marjorie does the things to make men crazier about her, and it seems that she loved none of them. The “calculation” she does makes her popularity even grows. On the other hand, calculating women as a woman is also a way to be more popular than others. Readers can see that from the climax of this story, Marjorie was too smart and insidious that she trapped Bernice in a catch-22 situation which Bernice is going to lose her popularity anyway. In this way Bernice will lose the capability to compete with her, and Marjorie still holds the biggest popularity and Warren’s heart. This might be a bad way to be the ideal woman in men’s mind but this characteristic really works through the time.

Third as an end, by analyzing Warren’s attitude to Marjorie and Bernice, people can get the idea that independence, or to some extent self-confidence, is really a key of popular women in the 1920s. To begin with, check the plots people can find that from the start it says that Warren had always been crazy about Marjorie though Marjorie did things like making affairs with other men, and definitely it was her decision not what her parents or anyone else ask her to do. She doesn’t listen to her parents even if her mother held opposite opinions as the conversation between them in Chapter III shows, no matter what Marjorie does she always has her style, she is always independent, and she’s always been attracting with this quality. On the contrary, Bernice has changed a lot from lacking of self-confidence to self-confident. And Warren changed his opinion to her as this impact took place. From chapter III to chapter V, it shows that Bernice’s turning from listening to everything Marjorie taught to she holds conversations freely as she want, during this progress Warren gradually became more and more interested in Bernice. According to this people can tell that at least in men’s eyes at that time, independent or self-confidence is a very important quality of an ideal woman in the 1920s. Moreover in the historical criticism, Dr. Rikard (ND) from Samford University said that there has been a wave of “searching of the modern American woman for an independent and satisfying life outside” and in the article “the Jazz Age” it also says that people chasing cooler music faster cars and shorter skirts and everything like that just to figure out their own style and that values people different from others. The key of Jazz Age is to be cool to be unique to be independent from others.

In conclusion, after analyzed the story and checked many historical criticisms, everything I listed above is the key to explain what role of an ide
al woman in the 1920s plays. The 1920s, another name “the Jazz Age”, an era of everyone chasing the cool making up and dressing up styles, chasing the independence the unique qualities, and sometimes had to calculate others. People who got these things which everyone chased can win popularity and became ideal, even became idol. So the answer is clear what the characteristics should an ideal Jazz Aged Woman has, nice personal appearance, being good at calculating and great independence. Well, it seems that not just in the Jazz Age but also now, people are still chasing the same things and have almost the same requirements for the ideal woman in the E Age now. Then, at last, a question for everyone, what about asking the same thing in the next age? What about in the 2000s, 2010s and 100 years from it in the 2020s?
