“ You’re too small,Ginny, and you’ll never make an Olympic team,” claimed my first-
ever rowing coach(教练)in the late winter of 1978. I had just taken an extremely large risk
being here, as I stood in the basement of Yale’s Payne Whitney Gymnasium. I had confessed

(坦白)my dream, which was admittedly outsize at that point,to somebody whose opinion not
only matters, but whose emotional support could play an important role. However, the easy
road did not lie ahead of me.
Defeated not just by his choices of words, but by his certainty,I left the gym in
a panic, forcing my tears back, rushing out into the cold winter weather to find comfort
in the loneliness of my off-campus apartment.
As I walked, I began to reassess(重新评估)my future, making room for my coach’s
opinion. But just because my coach didn’t have faith with me, or just because I’d heard
a forceful “no” instead of even a useless “yes”,it didn’t mean I had to give up on
myself so quickly. When I arrived at my apartment, I was annoyed with my coach and my dreain
was back on the centre stage.
To achieve my goal, I struggled hard eyery day. Eventually, I made that 1980 team,
despite our not beginning to compete at the Olympics. All the efforts were worth the wait.
And the lesson — not to give up on myself too soon and not to allow someone else’s opinion
to destroy my desire — has been really useful to me since those years. Everything I have
is a result of sticking to that dream, all those hours on the water, in the weight room,
and in th^ stadium — they got me there, where I know now that big aspirations(抱负)need
not just time to develop, but a firm belief in them. If I’m not going to be my own champion
for my dreams, no one else will. And I will not allow anyone else to decide for me what’s
possible.

In the second half of the 15th cetnury, European sailors began to plan voyages that
would take them beyond the limits of the world they knew. The new interest in the world
came in part from the Renaissance, but the main reason was to set up new trading links with
spice (香料)producing lands in Asia.
Spices were a necessary part of everyday life for the Europeans. Refrigeration had
not yet been invented, so the only way to keep meat was to salt it. Adding spices helped
to hide the salty taste. The spices also hid the taste of meat that had gone bad.
The Turks defeated the Byzantine Empire in 1453, cutting the land link between Europe
and Asia. If spices were to reach Europe, a sea route to Asia had to be found. Prince Henry ’
the Navigator of Portugal, set up a school for sailors and encouraged the exploration of
the African coast. In I486,Bartholomen Dias and his crew became the first Portuguese sailors
to reach the southern tip of Africa , but he turned back because his crew was unwilling
to travel any further. 10 years later, Dias helped another Portuguese sailor, Vasco da Gama,
plan avoyage around Africa to India.
Christoper Colurnbus hoped to reach India by sailing west. When the Portuguese king
would not sponsor(赞助)his voyage, Columbus asked Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. After
six years , they agreed. When Columbus reached a group of islands across the Atlantic Ocean
in 1492, he was certain he had reached his goal. So the Caribbean islands are known as the
West Indies. Columbus made three more voyages to the Caribbean, but never realized his
mistake.
28. What’s the main purpose of the European sailors exploring the world?
A. To find the new land.

B. To challenge the limits of sailing skills.
C. To get spices from abroad. '
D. To spread the spirit of the Renaissance.
29. Why were spices important for the Europeans?.
were more expensive than salt.
B. They made meat preserved with salt taste better.
C. They were used to refrigerate food.
D. They can take the place of salt to preserve meat.
30. Why did Bartholmeu Dias and his crew turn back from the southern tip of Africa?
A. They had finished their task.
B. They were not skilled enough to go any further.
C. Dias’ crew didn’t want to go any further.
D. Dias wanted to help another Portuguese sailor.
31. How did the Portuguese king react to Christopher Columbus’s voyage plan?
A. He didn’t support him. B. He tried to stop him.

Sculpting ice(冰雕)isn’t something that Swedes take lightly. In Jukkasjarvi, a village
a few miles east of Kiruna , the proprietors of one hotel begin planning for a winter ice
festival in March. That’s when they begin collecting some 5,000 tons of ice from the River
Tome in order to prepare the Icehotel, the world’s coolest place to stay.
Each year, the Icehotel selects artists and builders from around the world to design
ice rooms and snow rooms, which guests can book for a stay like any other hotel room. While
the only bed frames are carved out of rock ice, guests are still given sleeping bags and
guide books for bearing the cold, plus a cup of hot juice for surviving the night, “The
most important aspect is to keep your feet and head warm, so woolly socks and a hat are
important,” the Icehotel website reads.
Choices for overnight stay include snow rooms, ice rooms, art suites, and the Northern
Lights room, all of which cost about $$ 300 to $$ 900 per night. But the luxurious (奢华
