Passage 1
A fashion buyer once confessed, “If I am not at home, I must be in Paris or Milan. If I
am not there, I must be on the way. Sometimes when I wake up at midnight, I forget where
I am.” Fashion buyers are not stars, but they sit in the front of fashion shows. They are not
CEOs, but they determine the status of fashion designers. Fashion buyers cannot replace
anyone in the fashion circle, or vice versa.
Fashion buyers are also called apparel buyers. They oversee the development of
fashion and are responsible for the price range for department stores like Macy’s. They
arrange the brands, styles and display of goods for boutiques such as Lane Crawford. They
do a lot of research to predict trends and attend fashion shows to figure out what’s in and
what’s out.
As a fashion buyer, you need to think ahead of time and always be prepared for
changes. A typical fashion buyer buys clothes at least six months in advance, that is to say,
they will buy springsummer collection in September. Studying the past and the present,
forecasting the future trend is a must. Everyday fashion buyers of ZARA send information
concerning the latest fashions to the headquarters so that Zara can adjust its styles in time.
The profession of fashion buyers appears to be glamorous; however, it requires
artistic talent as well as rational thinking. Most fashion buyers have to analyze sales
statistics to work out budgets. People had better not be deceived by the decent appearance
of fashion buyers. More often than not, fashion buyers start from assistants at dressing
rooms, where they can talk face to face with customers and collect first-hand information
about their preferences. Generally, Asian people wear smaller sizes than westerners, so be
careful with sizes when placing orders to European companies.
Apart from that, fashion buyers need to work well under a great deal of pressure.
There are many deadlines to meet and an assortment of people to deal with. They need to
be creative and stylish. Nobody is willing to buy ugly clothes, so fashion buyers should be
current with fashion since fashion styles are always changing. Fashion buyers are doomed
to pursue perfection. A good fashion buyer is also good at public relations. They know
how to negotiate with suppliers and designers. The best attribute for fashion buyers would
be enthusiasm. Nothing beats him or her when a fashion buyer loves the job and has a
passion for fashion. It also matters if a fashion buyer loves challenges and is ready to learn
the buying behaviors of the target market.
According to a survey, around 30% of fashion buyers are 25 years old or younger. It’s
not surprising now that young people are generally the ones who are updated with the
latest fashion trends. So if you are not sure about what to do when you graduate? Consider

Passage 2
Human society has at all times attached great importance to the beauty of human
body, but people are seldom satisfied with their body image. A person may judge one’s
appearance in contrast to some cultural ideal beauty. Negative perceptions about the body
image may lead to depression or anorexia. That’s why so many girls go on a diet,
dreaming to look as slim as British super model Kate Moss or size zero Victoria Beckham.
However, things are not that easy. What if someone lost his nose in an accident? He is
likely to turn to plastic surgery for help. Plastic surgery aims to correct or restore the form
and function of human body via operations. Plastic surgery techniques were first carried
out in India around 800 BC. Ancient Egyptians and Romans also performed plastic surgery.
As a specialty, plastic surgery evolved remarkably during the 20th century. The first

female-to-male sex change surgery succeeded in 1946. Plastic surgery can be divided into
two types: cosmetic surgery and non-cosmetic surgery.
Cosmetic surgery is intended to enhance appearance beyond the average level toward
the ideal. For example, an old lady may undertake “face lift” to remove wrinkles and
aging signs from her face. On the contrary, non-cosmetic surgery mainly deals with
injuries. The treatment of burns is a good example.
In U.S. alone, nearly 12 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in 2007. In
Europe, cosmetic surgery is a $$ 2.2 billion business. In Asia, cosmetic surgery has become
an accepted practice. Children undergoing eyelid surgery can be frequently seen in South
Korea. The five most common cosmetic surgeries are as follows:
1. Tummy tuck: reshaping and framing of the tummy.
2. Eyelid surgery: reshaping of the eyelids.
3. Breast augmentation: augmentation of the breasts by means of fat grafting or
silicon gel.
4. Face lift: removal of wrinkles from the face.
5. Nasal surgery: reshaping of the nose.
With increasing media attention on beauty and perfection, more and more people turn
to plastic surgery. Some even take out loans for this purpose. Nevertheless, any form of
plastic surgery is sure to involve certain amount of risk. Michael Jackson, who undertook
13 nasal surgeries, had to admit his nose was a laughing stock. Every plastic surgery
comes at a price, either financially or physically. Will you undertake plastic surgery one
day? Or will you think twice?

36. Which of the following can NOT explain the reason why so many girls go on a diet?
A. They are not satisfied with their body shape.
B. They dream to look as slim as super models.
C. They are trying to challenge cultural standard.
D. They judge their appearance in contrast to ideal beauty.

37. What’s the purpose of a plastic surgery?
A. To restore the form and function of human body.
B. To reshape the form and function of human body.
C. To enhance appearance toward the average level.
D. To deal with injuries and make money.

38. Where were plastic surgery first performed?

Passage 3
As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once
you are in the habit of rushing through life and working from morning till night, it is hard
to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not
the bad thing as it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide
motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can
lead to poor performance and ill health.
The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual.
Some people are not afraid of stress and such characters are obviously prime material for
managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties.
When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In
fact we make choice between “flight or fight” and in more primitive days the choices
made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so
extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a
reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered.
Such serious conditions like high blood pressure and heart diseases have established links
with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives, it would be unwise to do so.
Even if we could, we need to find ways to deal with it.

41. People are finding less and less time to relax themselves because ________.
A. they do not know how to enjoy themselves
B. they do not believe that relaxation is important for health
C. they are traveling fast all the time
D. they are becoming busier with their work

42. According to the writer, the most important character for a good manager is his
________.
A. not fearing stress
B. knowing the art of relaxation
C. high sense of responsibility
D. having control over performance

Passage 4
There is one animation studio which has given audiences of all ages some of the most
beloved characters in film: from toys, monsters, fish and superheroes to cars, rats and
robots. Yes, it is Pixar. Founded in 1979, Pixar has achieved phenomenal success in its
short history. Between 1995 and 2006, it won 19 academy awards. A few years ago,
animators wanted to go to work for Disney. Now they want to go to Pixar, a place full of
freedom and creativity.
In its early years, many of Pixar’s employees would arrive at work by lunchtime and
work late into the night. This culture made the company not only highly productive but
also a relaxed fun place to work. They worked in a shabby office, with employees moving
around barefoot, some even bringing their pets to work. They did not expect to make
much money but stuck to their jobs due to its unconventional atmosphere and with the
dream of doing something completely new.
With the increasing number of employees, Pixar decided to move to a new studio.
The early plan was to build separate buildings for each department, the way a regular
movie studio does. But the Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter said that would make
everybody become isolated and no one knew what was going on. He even suggested that
there only be one bathroom in the building for all 700 people who work there because in
that case all kinds of people would come together and talk with one another all the time,
which would enhance communication.
Now about 700 odd employees are working in their distinctive new environment, a
single unit office with centralized spaces for relaxing, eating, and having meetings.
Visitors are greeted by life-size characters from Pixar’s movies. The office is also
decorated with different types of toys.
Pixar strives to hire animators who have superior acting ability — those able to bring

characters to life. In order to attract and retain talented animators, the company founded
Pixar University, which arranges talks and classes for employees to broaden their mind.
The animators work really hard, but they also have so much fun. With its distinctive
culture and passionate employees, Pixar will continually deliver on its promise to truly
entertain audiences all over the world.

46. According to the passage, what is not true about Pixar?

D. Animators want to work in Disney instead of Pixar.

A. He is the general manager and director of Pixar.
B. He wants his employees to communicate with each other.
C. He is very strict with his employees.
