English is the language of communication in schools and the medium of communication in many countries around the world. English is taught in schools as a foreign language in those countries where English is not the mother tongue. As a foreign language it has its importance; someone may want to learn English so as to be able to communicate better in another country. There are ways to teach English and one of the most common and efficient of English teaching methods is the communicative approach. Like any other subject in school, English can be taught by a formative or the communicative approach. The formative approach is more like reading the rules and vocabularies of the English language to someone who has never spoken a word of English in their lives and expecting them to grasp what you are trying to say. Being too formal in the teaching of English leaves gaping holes that may never be filled and cause students to lose interest.
The communicative approach is more than the rules and vocabularies, and is rather the teaching of English in context and is based on the speaking of English for experience. The communicative teaching of English can be done in two ways: task based teaching and content based instruction. Both of these approaches focus on the student, and how best to make
sure student learns the English language through speaking of it.
This is a method that uses classes that are primarily for the acquisition of other skills for teaching English while at the same time teaching the other skills to the students. English acquisition is a side bar acquisition in these classes. This way, they acquire their skills while learning English. The emphasis here is not to subject English to a purely English learning class but rather to a combination of other skills while teaching English. English is then taught in real life situations and the learner gets to pick up the vocabularies as they advance in their learning. English is put into practice and learning is enhanced through its practice. The communicative approach is more efficient and is a faster way of teaching English to persons who have never spoken the language. Introducing them to a situation, giving them some vocabularies to use in the same, having them use the words and in a real life situation are a far much better way of teaching English than the olden conventional ways. Students can easily relate and therefore learn. It also makes learning more interesting

The Changing Face Of Education: Computer Enhanced Instruction And The English Student
The face of education is changing rapidly as a direct result of innovative computer technology. Gone are the days of studying repetitive grammar exercises from an old copy of "A First Aid In English," while chalk dust floats on the air.
