4.5 Testing the adhesive strength of silver layers

For parts made of copper materials with a silver layer of plating thickness above 6μm and parts made of
aluminium base materials, the adhesive strength must always be tested (see footnote a) to Table 5).
An entry on the drawing is not required.

If the adhesive strength is to be or may be tested using a method other than peen finishing, a method in

4.8 Hydrogen embrittlement in high strength steels

High strength steels with a tensile strength above 1000 N/mm2 (e.g. screws, spring steels, carbonised steels)
may not be either pickled or given electroplating treatment due to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement.
The surface treatment ‘zinc phosphating and greasing’ without prior pickling is a proven alternative for indoor
location corrosion protection.

5 Requirements for carrying out cutting operations

Water-emulsive cooling lubricants must be used for the cutting operations. In the aqueous degreasing baths
normally used in electroplating. these can generally be removed easily.

Any faults in the base material, such as cracks, pores, scratches, grooves, scale, burrs etc. may only be present

Cast parts made of copper materials must often be so aggressively pickled before electroplating that the

The following requirements are aimed at the electroplating department carrying out the surface treatment.
The coatings must have good adhesion, low porosity, be clean and be free of blowholes and stains.
For permissible plating thickness tolerances, see Sect. 4.3.1 and 4.4,

Treatment of silver-plated parts in vibrators, which are also used in vibratory grinding: Trough vibrator (for base
frame products) or
circular vibrator (with separator for drum products) filled with stainless steel balls and a
suitable additional compound. Poorly adhesive silver deposits blister or flake off the base material.
The visual check is made on each individual part for base frame products and on the batch in overview for drum
products (small parts). Perfect adhesive strength must also be demonstrated in areas where no coating is
required but has been applied – where permissible – due to the method used.
