When friends come to visit us in the evening, they spend their time telling us they
are in a hurry and looking at their watches. It isn’t that our friends are all very busy, it
is just that we haven’t got a television. People think that we are very strange. “But
what do you do in the evening?”,they are always asking. The answer is very simple.
Both my wife and I have hobbies. We certainly don’t spend our evenings staring at
the walls. My wife enjoys cooking and painting and often attends evening classes in
foreign languages. This is particularly useful as we often go abroad for our holidays. I
collect stamps and I’m always busy with my collection. Both of us enjoy listening to
the music and playing chess together.
Sometimes there are power cuts and we have no electricity in the house. This
does not worry us, we just light candles and carry on with what we were doing before.
Our friends, however, are lost---no television!---So they don’t know what to do. On
such evenings our house is very full ---they all come to us. They all have a good time.
Instead of sitting in silence in front of the television, everybody talks and plays
games.

A sign is another kind of language. Here are some of them that you see on the
roads:
Number one is a sign with the number thirty on it. When drivers see this sign, they
must not go at more than thirty kilometers an hour. We see this sign when we are
getting near a town. Number two is a sign that we’re near a crossing. We must drive
carefully. Number three is a sign that there is a bend in the road. Again, we must drive
slowly and carefully. It is not safe to go round a bend very fast. Number four is a sign
that there is another road coming in from the right. There is a junction at this place.
Number five is a sign that there is a hill and number six is a sign that the road gets
narrow. Drivers must go slowly and carefully. Number seven has the word
“SCHOOL” on it. This is a sign that there is a school at the side of the street or the
road. Perhaps there are children going to or leaving school. So drivers must look
carefully and go slowly. Number eight is a sign with the letter “P” on it. The letter “P”
means “Parking”. At some places, there’re the signs “No parking” or “No waiting”. If
a driver leaves his car near one of these signs, a policeman may come and write down
the number of his car.
45. At the places where you see Sign 1, ________.
A. you are already out of a town
B. you still have thirty kilometers to go
C. there must be a town thirty kilometers away

A. near Sign 8 at any time
B. near a sign with “No parking” on it
C. near a sign with “No waiting” if there’re no police there
D. near a sign with “P” on it in the daytime
48. People put these signs on the roads to________.
A. show drivers the way B. stop cars going too fast
C. make driving even safer D. learn another kind of language

There are labels(标签) inside all new clothes. The labels tell you how to take care

of your clothes. The label for a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water. A sweater
label may tell you to wash in cold water. The label on a coat may say “dry clean
only”, for washing may ruin(弄坏) this coat. If you do as the directions (说明)on the
label, you can keep your clothes looking their best for a long time.
Many clothes today must be dry cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive. When buying
new clothes, check to see if they will need to be dry cleaned. You will save money if
you buy clothes that can be washed.
You can save money if you buy clothes that are well made. Well-made clothes last
longer. They look good even after they have been washed many times. Clothes that
cost more money are not necessarily(不一定) better made. They do not always fit
better. Sometimes less expensive clothes look and fit better than more expensive
clothes.
49. If you want to save money, you had better buy clothes that ______.
A. don’t fit you B. don’t last long
C. need to be dry cleaned D. can be washed

Ewan McGregor:
The Leading Role in the film Big Fish
Childhood
Ewan McGregor was born on March 31, 1971, in Crieff, Scotland. Despite being
born into a family of teachers, McGregor was not a very smart student and showed an
interest in acting at an early age. He caught the acting interest from his uncle, Denis
Lawson, an actor who was in the first three Star Wars films.
Starting off
McGregor left school at 16. Later he was then accepted to London’s Guildhall
School of Music and Drama. His film debut(首次演出) was an only one- line role in
Bill Forsyth’s Being Human.
Breakthrough

(1996), brought McGregor major popular and critical attention. He acted Mark

Renton, which earned him the London Film Critics Circle Award nomination(提名)
for Best Breakthrough Performance.
Star on the rise
The success of Trainspotting allowed McGregor more opportunities. His starring
role in the tragic-comic-operatic-musical(悲喜剧、歌剧兼音乐剧) Moulin Rouge(《红
磨坊》) as Christian showed the ability McGregor has in taking on any type of role
and making the character come alive in a way few actors can. McGregor’s
performance gained many fans and attention from the film world, earning a Golden
Globe nomination for Best Actor.

D. there must be many houses and buildings not far away

A. each of the eight signs B. either of Signs 2 and 3
C. all of Signs 3, 5, 6 and 7 D. any of Signs 3, 5, 6 and 7
47. A driver can leave his car________.
A. near Sign 8 at any time
B. near a sign with “No parking” on it
C. near a sign with “No waiting” if there’re no police there
D. near a sign with “P” on it in the daytime

They do not always fit
better. Sometimes less expensive clothes look and fit better than more expensive
clothes.

In 1994 McGregor got his big break, appearing as Alex Law in the cult- hit(风靡

(1996), brought McGregor major popular and critical attention. He acted Mark

Renton, which earned him the London Film Critics Circle Award nomination(提名)
for Best Breakthrough Performance.
