Another virtue Americans respect is perseverance. Remember Aesop’s fabl
e about the turtle and the rabbit that had a race? The rabbit thought he coul
d win easily, so he took a nap. But the turtle finally won because he did n
ot give up. Another story tells of a little train that had to climb a steep hill.
The hill was so steep that the little train had a hard time trying to get ove
r it. But the train just kept pulling, all the while saying, “I think I can, I th
ink I can.” At last, the train was over the top of the hill. “I thought I coul
d, I thought I could,” chugged the happy little train.
Compassion may be the queen of American virtues. The story of “The G

ood Samaritan” from the Bible describes a man who showed compassion. On
his way to a certain city, a Samaritan man found a poor traveler lying on
the road. The traveler had been beaten and robbed. The kind Samaritan, inst
ead of just passing by, stopped to help this person in need. Compassion can
even turn into a positive cycle. In fall 1992, people in Iowa sent truckloads
of water to help Floridians hit by a hurricane. The next summer, during the
Midwest flooding, Florida returned the favor. In less dramatic ways, million
s of Americans are quietly passing along the kindnesses shown to them.
Great moral stories can build character. The success of The Book of Virt
ues in 1993 shows that many Americans still believe in moral values. Moral
values are invaluable.

Patience is a quality of heart that can be greatly enhanced with deliberate
practice. An effective way that I have found to deepen my own patience is
to create actual practice periods–periods of time that I set up in my mind t
o practice the art of patience. Life itself becomes a classroom, and the curri
culum is patience. You can start with as little as five minutes and build up
your capacity for patience, over time. Start by saying to yourself, “Okay, for
the next five minutes I won’t allow myself to be bothered by anything. I’ll
be patient.” What you’ll discover is truly amazing. Your intention to be pat
ient, especially if you know it’s only for a short while, immediately strength
ens your capacity for patience. Patience is one of those special qualities whe
re success feeds on itself. Once you reach little milestones—five minutes of
successful patience—you’ll begin to see that you do, indeed, have the capacit

y to be patient, even for longer periods of time. Over time, you may even
become a patient person.
Being patient will help you to keep your perspective. You’ll see even a
difficult situation, say your present challenge, isn’t “life or death” but simply
a minor obstacle that must be dealt with. Without patience, the same scenar
io can become a major emergency complete with yelling, frustration, hurt fee
lings, and high blood pressure. It’s really not worth all that. Whether you’re
needing to deal with children, your boss, or a difficult person or situation—
if you don’t want to “sweat the small stuff”, improving your patience level i
s
a great way to start.

At sixteen Ron Mackie might have stayed at school, but the future called
to him excitedly. “Get out of the classroom into a job,” it said, and Ron o

his wife. Before he had finished the sandwich, the woman had taken him o
n for the rest of the summer, at twenty pounds a week, a room upstairs and
three meals a day. The ease and speed of it rather took Ron’s breath away.

Ask three people to look out the same window at a busy street corner a
nd tell you what they see. Chances are you will receive three different answ
ers. Each person sees the same scene, but each perceives something different

about it.
Perceiving goes on in our minds. Of the three people who look out the
window, one may say that he sees a policeman giving a motorist a ticket. A
nother may say that he sees a rush hour traffic jam at the intersection. The
third may tell you that he sees a woman trying to cross the street with four
children in tow. For perception is the mind’s interpretation of what the sens
es—in this case our eyes—tell us.
Many psychologists (心理学家) today are working to try to determine jus
t how a person experiences or perceives the world around him. Using a scie
ntific approach, these psychologists set up experiments in which they can co
ntrol all of the factors. By measuring and charting the results of many exper

ly different things about the same scene.

43.

“Get out of the classroom into a job,” it said, and Ron o
beyed. His father, supporting the decision, found a place for him in a super
market. “You’re lucky, Ron,” he said. “For every boy with a job these days,
there’s a dozen without.” So Ron joined the working world at twenty poun
ds a week.
For a year he spent his days filing shelves with tins of food. By the end
of that time he was looking back on his school-days as a time of great var
iety (多样性) and satisfaction. He searched for an interest in his work, with
little success.
One fine day instead of going to work Ron got a lift on a lorry going s
outh. With nine pounds in his pocket, a full heart ad a great longing for the
sea, he set out to make a better way for himself. That evening, in Bourne
mouth, he had a sandwich and a drink in a café run by an elderly man and
his wife. Before he had finished the sandwich, the woman had taken him o
n for the rest of the summer, at twenty pounds a week, a room upstairs and
three meals a day. The ease and speed of it rather took Ron’s breath away.
At quite times Ron had to check the old man’s arithmetic in the records of
the business.
At the end of the season, he stayed on the coast. He was again surprised
how straightforward it was for a boy of 17 to make a living. He worked i
n shops mostly, but once he took a job in a hotel for 3 weeks. Late in Oct
ober he was taken on by the sick manager of a shoe shop. Ron soon found
himself in charge there; he was the only one who could keep the books.

By measuring and charting the results of many exper
iments, they are trying to find out what makes different people perceive total
ly different things about the same scene.
