Some years ago I took on a task in a southern
county to work with people on public
welfare.
What I wanted to do was to show that everybody has
the capacity to be self
sufficient and all we
have to do is to activate(激励)them. I asked the
country to pick up a
group of people who were
on public welfare, people from different racial
groups and
different family groups. I would
then see them as a group for three hours every
Friday. I
also asked for a little petty cash
to work with, as I needed it.
The first thing
I said after I shook hands with everybody was,
“I’d like to know what
your dreams
are.”Everyone looked at me as if I were kind of
fool.
One woman said to me, “I don’t know what
you can do with dreams. The rats are
eating up
my kids.”
“Oh,”I said, “That’s terrible. No,
of course, you are very much involved with the
rats
and your kids. How can that be helped?”
“Well, I could use a new screen door because
there are holes in my screen door.”I
asked,
“Is there anybody around here who know how to fix
a screen door?”
There was a man in the group
and he said, “A long time ago I used to do things
like
that but now I have a terribly bad back,
but I’ll try.”
I told him I had some money if
he would go to the store and but some screening
and
go and fix the lady’s screen door. “Do you
think you can do that?”
“Yes, I’ll try.”
The next week, when the group was seated. I
said to the woman, “Well, is your

screen door fixed?”
“Oh, yes.” she
said.
“Then we can start dreaming, can’t we?”
she sort of smiled at me.
I said to the man
who did the work, “How do you feel?”
He said,
“Well, you know, it’s very funny thing. I’m
beginning to feel a lot better.”
That helped
the group to begin to dream. These seemingly small
successes allowed
the group to see that dreams
were not insane. These small steps began to get
people to
see and feel that something really
could happen.
Everyone found something. The
man who put in the screen door became a
handyman. In 12 weeks, I had all those people
off public welfare. I’ve not only done that
once, I’ve done that in many times.
50.What’s the opinion the author had when he
took on the work?

for the Northem District of California in San Jose
will hold a

第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从下框的A-F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一
项为多余项。
A.The secret of the writer’s success
B. A write with enduring popularity
C. Well-
received creation to encourage Brits D. The
insight into human nature
E. Writing styles in
different stages F. The story appreciate
for school students
61.
Charles Dickens is
often thought of as one of England’s great
writers. Yet for many
his language is old-
fashioned and his story plots often improbable.
Why, Dickens, out of
so many other great
English writers, has made the list? How then to
explain Dickens’s
enduring popularity?
62.
One reason undoubtly is the British
government’s insistence that every child studies a
Dickens novel at school. Alongside Willian
Shakespeare, Charles Dickens is a
compulsory
(必读的)writer on every English literature school
reading list. His stories,
though often over-
long by today’s standard, are superbly written
moral tales. They are
filled with colorful
characters.
63.
But what makes his
books stand out from other English writers is his
insight into human
nature. Dickens, like
Shakespeare, tells us truths about human behavior
that are as true
to citizens of the
21
st
century as they were to his readers
in the 19
th
century. Readers have
returned to Dickens’s books again and again
over the years to see what he has to say
about
readers’own time.
64.
The BBC adapted one
of his less well-known novels, Little Dorrit, into
a popular
television drama that introduced
many Brits to the novel for the first time. A dark
story
about greed and money, it was the
perfect story to illustrate the bad times. No
surprise
then that it was Dickens Britons
turned to, during the economic crisis last year,
to make
sense of world rapidly falling apart.
65.
Readers of the 19
th
and early
20
th
century usually prized Dickens’s
earlier novels for
their humor and pathos(悲痛).
While recognizing the virtues of these books,
critics today
tend to rank more highly the
later works because of their formal coherence and
acute
perception(洞察力) of the human condition.
For as long as Dickens’s novels have
something
to say to modern audiences, it seems likely that
he will remain one of Britain’s
best loved
writers.

Is Recycling Textbook a Good
suggestion?
On behalf of our group, I’d like
to give a brief summary of our discussion on the
topic
“Is Recycling Textbook a Good
Suggestion?” As we know, when high school students
graduate from school, their textbooks are
thrown away, which are still in good condition.
What a great waste it is!
A suggestion
has been put forward that we should recycle the
textbooks. Some
students in my group agree to
this suggestion. For one thing, recycling
textbooks can
save a lot of natural resources,
which are used to make textbooks. And it can also
save
plenty of family expenses. For another,
in western countries, recycling textbooks is very
popular and it gives us a good example. But
some have different opinions about it, for the
content of the textbooks are often renewed.
What’s more, it is not proper to make notes in
the textbooks.
But in my opinion, this is
a wonderful idea because this will do good to both
the
government and the families.
