It is a debate that has continued since
Tuanic became one of the most successful films of
all time: Did Rose leave
Jack to die by not
letting him up on the wooden life raft as they
floated in the ocean?
And now a US
television show has carried out a series of tests
that show Lconardo DiCaprio’s character could
have survived the disaster had he lifted
himself onto the raft from which Rose, played by
Kate Winslet, was pulled.
The Discovery
Channel’s Mythbustes recreated the conditions
after the Titanic sank in 1912 and , through
hypothermia(低体温)tests, discovered Jack would
have survived the freezing conditions if he had
climbed out.
As fans of the 1979
blockbuster will remember, Jack remains in the
freezing water while Rose lies on top of a
floating piece of the wreckage(碎片)as he does
not want to overturn it.
In the dramatic
climax to the Oscar-winning epic, Jack dies from
hypothermia while Rose is rescued. Titanic
director James Caneron told Mythbusters he
believed the wooden life raft would not have
supported both Jack and
Rose.
But the
team found that if Rose had taken off her
lifejacket and put it under the raft it would have
given them
enough buoyancy(浮力) to keep both of
them afloat.
In the film Rose was one of
the last to be resued. Historical documents show
that Fitth Officer Harold lowe, who
was
described rescuing Rose, looked for survivors 45
minuter.
In a separate test the
Mythbusters team found that had Jack remained in
the waater for over an hour he would
have died
from hypothermia.
Cameron, however, had
the last word welling the TV show that Jack had to
die as that’s what the script called for.
He said,”I think you guys are missing the point
here. The script says Jack died. He has to die. So
maybe we made
a mistake and the board should
have been a little tiny bit smaller, but the
dude’s goin down.”
60. In the dramatic climax
to the Oscar-winning film, Jack dies from_______.
A. being stupid
B. Being drowned
C. being exhausted
D. low body-temperature
61. According to the
passage, which of the statements is true?
A.
Rose left Jack to die by not letting him up on the
wooden life raft.
B. Jack could have survived
even if he had been in water for over an hour.
C. Jack would have been forzen to death had he
been on the raft with Rose.

How long you live has a lot to do with your
environment and lifestyle, but exceptional long
life may have even
more to do with your genes.
For the first time, researchers have discovered a
genetic recipe(基因谱) that accurately
predicts
who live on 100 and beyond.
Analysis shows
that 90% of the participants who lived to 100 had
at least one of the signature genetic
clusters(标
志基因组). Do Thomas Perls at the Boston
University School of Medicine said, “We realize
this is a complex genetic
puzzle. There is a
long way for us to to to understand how the
combination of these genes with lifestyle factors
is
playing a role in this long life puzzle.
Perls has studied many factors that contribute
to long life, and he is the first to acknoledge
that living longer isn’t
likely to be simply a
matter of genes. His previous work has example,
that among most clderly people who
live into
their 70s and 80s, about 70% can owe their long
lift to lifestyle factors such as not smoking,
eating a healthy,
low-fat, low-calorie diet,
and remaining sicially engaged and mentally active
throughout life.
It seems clear that those who
live extremely long are benefiting from a special
DNA. In fact, Perls believes that
the older a
person gets, the more likely it is that his or her
genes are contributing to those extended years.
63. Perls may most likely agree
that___________.
A. living longer just
depends on certain genetid recipes
B.
lifestyle factors play an important role in long-
living
C. most people living extremely long
benefit from not smoking
D. being mentally
active has nothing to do with living an old age
of the following is FALSE according to the
text?
A. Remaining socially engaged helps a
person to live long
B. If you want to live
to 100, you must have the right gencs.
C. A
genetic recipe can predict who may live to 100 and
beyond.

US Journalism
Relies More on Internet Blogs
Nowadays, when
you want to read news from around the world, you
are more likely to poen up your laptop than
pick up a newspaper. In fact, an Internet
blogger is the reason that The Guardian newspaper
was able to publish storics
provided by US
citizen Edward Snowden, who stayed in Hong Kong
carlier this summer and there he revealed the
information of the US National Sccurity
Agency.
The storics that Snowden helped reveat
are all about US national security, a very serious
topic. When US
joumalists want to write about
national sucurity, they usually need a government
source, such as Snowden,to provide
them with
information, But in recent years, especially since
“the 9.11 Incident”,major US news media have been
less
likely to publish government secrets.
They are more willing to cooperate with the US
government and military than
they are to
oppose them. The result is that government sources
are afraid to talk to most journalists.
Snowden eventually gave his information to an
independent journalist named Glenn Greenwald.
Greenwald is an
American lawyer by trade, and
he spent most of the 2000s building a large
audience for hie political blog posts. Unlike
most journalists,he didn’t choose to work for
newspapers or TV stations, he chose to do
everything himself. But one
major media
company, The Guaudian, saw the potential for an
independent voice like Greenwald to help them
break
stories that other companies could not.
So they hired him in 2012 to host his blog at
their website and contribute stories
to their
newspaper.
When Snowden was preparing to
reveal US government secrets, he knew that he
couldn’t trust most US journalists.
He was a
fan of the most important US national security
stories in history. This wouldn’t have been
possible without the
rise of Internet blogs,
which has helped independent thinkers like
Greenwald find an audience.

Schools for troubled teens offer
discipline and in some cases, drup treatment
programs that can provide important life
skills, and more importantly, a fiesh start.
The following is a list of the most effective
types of schools for tuoubled teens. Not every
facility is a match for
every child. But by
knowing the differences between them, parents can
decide better where to send their teenagers.
Boarding Schools
When a child is unable to
deal with the telative freedom of a standard
school day, boreding schools might be a
good
choice. At boarding schools, the child lives in a
dorm setting, where almost every minute of the day
is scheduled
by school administrators.
Treatment Centers
When a teenager has an
addiction to drugs or alcohol. A treatment center
that specializes in young people is an
outstanding way to help them break the cycle
of addiction, Treatment centers feature individual
and group
counseling(咨询) to help identify the
root causes of the drug problem and help develop
the life skills needed to stay
clean when the
program is over.
Wilderness Programs
Designed to help improve the discipline and self-
reliance of the child, wilderness programs send
kids back to
nature. By placing them in a
foreign and sometimes uncomfortable setting,
wilderness programs hope to improve
children’s
behavior. Programs generally include hikes,
exercise programs and team building exercies.
Boot Camps
Boot camps are the most
extreme style of school for tuoubled teens. These
facilities are modeled after actual
military
boot the individual must must into shape. Work as
part of a team, and follow a long, hard set of
rutes and regulations. However, boor camps
might not be the best choice for a teen with a
drug addiction.

One
possible version:
The picture shows us a
dialogue between a father and his son. The father
asks his son to empty the dustbin
before
worrying about disposing of nuclear waste. It
reveals the importance of doing small things well
before
undertaking something big.
Undoubtedly, doing small things is the first step
to cuccess and will contribute to doing something
big in future.
By doing something small, we
are able to accumulate experience, master skills
and train ourselves to be more patient.
In
other words, we can be well prepared for further
challenges in the course of fulfilling small
things. By contuast,
those who set out to do
something big when too young will be constantly
troubled by disappointment, frustrations or
even failures. When “something big” really
appears, they can hardly deal with them because of
the lack of experience
and confidence which
comes from doing small things.
In my
poinion,under no circumstances should we
underestimate the value of doing small things.
Instead,we
should regard small things as the
source of experience, skills and patience. Just as
Aristotle once said, “Great
achievment only
belongs to those who an do small things
perfectly.”
