1. – Thank you so
much for the book you sent me.
–
_________________
(A) No, Thank you.
(B) I’m glad you like it.
(C) Please, don’t
say so.
(D) No, it’s not so good.
所以,I’m
glad you like it.
2. – It’s been a
wonderful evening. Thank you very much.
–

(A) My pleasure.
(B) I’m glad to hear that.
(C) No, thanks.
(D) It’s ok.
而It
do
esn’t matter.
不符合英语习惯;
No, thanks.
3.
–Thanks for the lovely party and the delicious
food.
– _________________
(A) No,
thanks.
(B) Never mind.
(C) All right.
(D) Don’t mention it.
我们可以说Don’t mention it. 或
That’s
all right. 但不能说All right。而No, thanks.
和Never mind.
4. – You
have won the football game. Congratulations!
– _________________
(A) We are really
lucky.
(B) No one else could do it.
(C) Oh, not really.
(D) It’s nice of you to
say so.
所以,回答Oh, not really. 和We are
reall
y lucky. No one else could do
it. 故只有It’
s nice of you to say so.
5. –Thanks, you saved my life!
– _________________
(A) Oh, I’m afraid
I didn’t do well enough.
(B) I’m glad I
could help.
(C) No problem.
(D) It’s
not necessary for you to say so.
I’m glad I coul
d help.”
C选项的No
problem.
6. – You’ve been
a great help. I do appreciate your kindness.
– _________________
(A) You are
welcome.
(B) You are welcomed.
(C)
Forget it.
(D) That’s what I should do.
You are
welcome. Forget it.
意为“算了”;
7. – I really
like your apartment.
– __________________
(A) That’s right.
(B) You could say
so.
(C) Thanks for saying so.
(D) Good
idea.
Thanks
for saying so.
That’s
right. You could say so. 和Good idea.
8. – Thanks for coming all the way over here.
– _________________
(A) Don’t be sorry.
(B) It’s no trouble.
(C) Not at all.
(D) Both ’s no trouble
It’s no trouble.
或Not at
all.
说No
trouble at all. 但不能用Don’t be sorry.

– _________________
(A) It doesn’t
matter.
(B) It’s nothing.
(C) Yes, you
are right.
(D) Of course.
nothing. It doesn’t
matte
10. – It’s very thoughtful of you to give me a
ride.

42.
Psychologists tell us that there are five distinct
phases (or stage
s) of culture shock.
During the first few days of a person’s stay in a
new country, eve
rything usually goes fairly
smoothly. The newcomer is excited about being in a
new place where there are new sights and
sounds, new smells and tastes.
Unfortunately, this honeymoon phase often comes to
an end fairly so
on. The newcomer has to deal
with transportation problems, shopping problems,
o
r communication problems.
This may
lead to the second stage of culture shock, known
as the “r
ejection phase”. It is so called
because it is at this point that the newcomer
starts to reject the host country, complaining
about and noticing only the bad
things that
bother them.
If you don’t survive stage
two successfully, you may find yourself
moving
into stage three: the “regression phase”. In this
phase, you spend muc
h of your time speaking
your own language, watching videos from your home
count
ry, eating food from home. Your homeland
may suddenly seem marvelously wonderfu
l; all
the difficulties that you had there are forgotten
and you may find yours
elf wondering why you
ever left.
If you survive the third
stage successfully you will move into the
fourth stage of culture shock called the
“recovery phase”. In this stage you
start to
realize that no country is that much better than
another—it is just d
ifferent lifestyles and
different ways to deal with the problems of life.
With
this complete adjustment, you accept the
food, drinks, habits and customs of th
e host
country, and you may even find yourself preferring
some things in the ho
st country to things at
home. Finally you have become comfortable in the
new pl
ace.
Much later, you may find
yourself returning to your homeland and—g
uess
what?—you may find yourself entering the fifth
phase of culture shock. Th
is is called
“reverse culture shock”. You have been away for a
long time,
becoming comfortable with the
habits and customs of a new lifestyle and you
may
find that you are no longer completely
comfortable in your home country.

Almost everyone who studies,
lives or works abroad experiences some
degree
of culture shock. This period of cultural
adjustment involves everythin
g from getting
used to the food and language to learning how to
use the telepho
ne. No matter how patient and
flexible you are, adjusting to a new culture
can,
at times, be difficult and frustrating.
It is easy to get lost, depressed and
homesick. You may even want to go back home!
Donˇt panic these are all
totally normal reactions and you are
not
alone. Sometimes it is hard to remember why you
decided to leave home. You
are on an adventure
a wonderful opportunity to grow and learn but
it does
not always seem that way. Although you
cannot avoid culture shock entirely, we
have a
number of tips that will help you get through
difficult moments:
冘 Start a
journal of the new things you come across every
day and
your reactions to your new home.
Writing things down will help you keep them in
perspective, and are funny to look back on!
冘 Never confuse your ability to speak
the new language with your i
ntelligence;
it is easy to feel stupid and get down on
yourself, but there is n
o reason to. It takes
everyone some time to adjust and become
comfortable with
a new language.
冘 Be physically active! Walk, swim, run,
play tennis or do some ot
her physical activity
you enjoy often. You will feel better, meet new
people an
d keep in shape.
冘 Keep your sense of humor. Try, no matter how
hard it is, to see
something of value in every
new experience and challenge you come across.
Laugh
now, not just later!
冘 Take advantage of services that your university,
church or commu
nity offer. Contact a counselor
at the International Students Office, a
residen
t advisor if you live in residence
halls, someone at your church
If you are having a
problem with something, tell someone! They
will
want to help you, and you will feel a lot
better having people to support you.
Donˇt be
afraid to speak up.

It was a normal summer night. Humidity hung in the
thick air.
I couldn’t go to sleep,
partly because of my cold and partly b
ecause
of my expectations for the next day. My mum had
said that tomorrow was g
oing to be a surprise.
Sweat stuck to my aching body.
Finally, gathered enough strengt
h to sit up. I
looked out of my small window into the night.
There was a big br
ight moon hanging in the
sky, giving off a magic light.
I
couldn’t stand the pressure anymore, so I did what
I always
do to make myself feel better. I went
to the bathroom and picked up my toothbru
sh
and toothpaste. I cleaned my teeth as if there was
no tomorrow. Back and for
th, up and down.
Then I walked downstairs to look for
some signs of movement, so
me life. Gladiator,
my cat, frightened me as he meowed his sad song.
He was on
the old orange couch, sitting up on
his front legs, waiting for something to ha
ppen. He looked at me as if to say “I’m
lonely, pet me. I need a good hug.”
Even the
couch begged me to sit on it.
In one
movement I settled down onto the soft couch. This
couch
represented my parents’ marriage, my
birth, and hundreds of other little event
s.
As I held Gladiator, my heart started
beating heavily. My mind
was flooded with
question: What’s life? Am I really alive? Are you
listening t
o me? Every time I moved my hand
down Gladiator’s body, I had a new thought;
e
ach touch sang a different song.
I forgot all about the heat and the next day’s
surprise. The a
tmosphere was so full of warmth
and silence that I sank into its arms. Falling
asleep with the big cat in my arms, I felt all
my worries slowly move away.

Differences in American
schools compared with those found in the
ma
jority of other countries lie in the fact
that education here has long been int
ended for
everyone — not just for a privileged elite.
Schools are expected to
meet the needs of
every child, regardless of ability, and also the
needs of soc
iety itself. This means that
public schools offer more than academic
subject
s. It surprises many people when they
come here to find high schools offerin
g such
courses as typing, sewing, repair of radio,
computer programming or driv
er training, along
with traditional academic subjects such as
mathematics, hist
ory, and languages. Students
choose their curricula depending on their
interest
s, future goals, and level of ability.
The underlying goal of American educatio
n is
to develop every child to the utmost of his or her
own possibilities, and
to give each one a
sense of civic and community consciousness.
Schools have traditionally played an important
role in creating nat
ional unity and
“Americanizing” the millions of immigrants who
have poured in
to this country from many
different backgrounds and origins. Schools still
play
a large role in the community, especially
in the small towns.
The approach to
teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only
beca
use it is informal, but also because there
is not much emphasis on learning fac
ts.
Instead, Americans try to teach their children to
think for themselves and
to develop their own
intellectual and creative abilities. Students
spend muc
h time, learning how to use resource
materials, libraries, statistics and
compu
ters. Americans believe that if children
are taught to reason well and to resea
rch
well, they will be able to find whatever facts
they need throughout the res
t of their lives.
Knowing how to solve problems is considered more
important th
an the accumulation of facts.
