be encouraging words and words of determination. A
personwho beieves in them wi keep trying to reach his
goa no matter how manytimes he fais. In my opinion,
the quaity of determination to succeed is
animportant one to have. Therefore, I beieve that we
shoud never give up.
One reason is that if we give up too easiy, we
wi rarey achieveanything. It is not unusua for us to
fai in our first attempt at somethingnew, so we shoud
not fee discouraged and shoud try again. Besides, if

weaways give up when we fai, we wi not be abe to deveop
new skis and growas peope. Another reason we shoud
never give up is that we can earn from ourmistakes
ony if we make a new effort. If we do not try again,
the esson wehave earned is wasted. Finay, we shoud
never give up because as we work toreach our goas,
we deveop confidence, and this confidence can hep us
succeedin other areas of our ives. If we never
chaenge ourseves, we wi begin todoubt our abiities.
In short, it is important that wedo not give up
when working for our goas. Whether we succeed in the
end ornot, we wi earn something, and what we earn wi
hep us to become better,more confident peope.
Furthermore, if we give up, we have non chance
ofattaining our goas, but if we keep trying, there
is aways a chance that wewi succeed one day. Thank

been iving and teaching in theGuf for over 30 years.
(Appause) And in that time, I have seen a ot ofchanges.
Now that statistic is quite shocking. And I want to
tak to you todayabout anguage oss and the gobaization
of Engish. I want to te you aboutmy friend who was
teaching Engish to aduts in Abu Dhabi. And one fine
day,she decided to take them into the garden to teach
them some nature it was she who ended
up earning a the Arabic words for the oca pants,as
we as their uses -- medicina uses, cosmetics, cooking,
herba. How didthose students get a that knowedge? Of
course, from their grandparents andeven their
great- grandparents. Its not necessary to te you how
important itis to be abe to communicate across
generations.

unprecedented rate. Aanguage dies every 14 days. Now,
at the same time, Engish is the undisputedgoba
anguage. Coud there be a connection? We I dont know.
But I do knowthat Ive seen a ot of changes. When I
first came out to the Guf, I came toKuwait in the days
when it was sti a hardship post. Actuay, not that
ongago. That is a itte bit too eary. But nevertheess,
I was recruited by theBritish Counci aong with about
25 other teachers. And we were the firstnon-Musims
to teach in the state schoos there in Kuwait. We were
brought toteach Engish because the government wanted

to modernize the country andempower the citizens
through education. And of course, the U.K. benefited
fromsome of that ovey oi weath.

bandwagon for every Engish-speaking nation on
why not? After a, the best education --

according to the atest WordUniversity Rankings -- is
to be found in the universities of the U.K. and theU.S.
So everybody wants to have an Engish education,
naturay. But if yourenot a native speaker, you have
to pass a test.

their dream any onger, ti they get Engish. Now et me
putit this way, if I met a monoingua Dutch speaker
who had the cure for cancer,woud I stop him from

entering my British University? I dont think so.
Butindeed, that is exacty what we do. We Engish
teachers are the you have to satisfy
us first that your Engish is good enough. Now it canbe
dangerous to give too much power to a narrow segment
of society. Maybe thebarrier woud be too universa.

Okay. But, I hear you say, what about theresearch?
Its a in Engish. So the books are in Engish, the
journasare done in Engish, but that is a sef-fufiing
prophecy. It feeds theEngish requirement. And so it
goes on. I ask you, what happened totransation? If

you think about the Isamic Goden Age, there was ots
oftransation then. They transated from Latin and
Greek into Arabic, intoPersian, and then it was
transated on into the Germanic anguages of Europeand
the Romance anguages. And so ight shone upon the Dark
Ages of Europe. Nowdont get me wrong; I am not against
teaching Engish, a you Engish teachersout there. I
ove it that we have a goba anguage. We need one today
morethan ever. But I am against using it as a barrier.
Do we reay want to end upwith 600 anguages and the
main one being Engish, or Chinese? We need morethan
that. Where do we draw the ine? This system equates
inteigence with aknowedge of Engish which is quite
arbitrary.

test. Case in point, Einstein. He,by the way, was

have to pass an Engishtest. Because they didnt start
unti 1964 with TOEFL, the American test ofEngish. Now
its expoded. There are ots and ots of tests of Engish.
Andmiions and miions of students take these tests
every year. Now you mightthink, you and me, those
fees arent bad, theyre okay, but they areprohibitive
to so many miions of poor peope. So immediatey, were
rejectingthem.

circuarthing.

studied scienceand mathematics in Arabic. Its an

Arabic medium schoo. She had to transate itinto
Engish at her grammar schoo. And she was the best in
the cass at thosesubjects. Which tes us that, when
students come to us from abroad, we may notbe giving
them enough credit for what they know, and they know
it in their ownanguage. When a anguage dies, we dont
know what we ose with that anguage. 我的女儿从科威

was never enough kerosene,because what does a doar
a day buy for you? So he invented a cost-free soaramp.
And now the chidren in his viage get the same grades
at schoo as thechidren who have eectricity at home.

(Appause) When he received his award,he said these
ovey words: The chidren can ead Africa from what it
istoday, a dark continent, to a ight continent. A
simpe idea, but itcoud have such far-reaching
consequences.
