shocking. And I want to
tak to you todayabout
anguage oss and the gobaization
of Engish. I
want to te you aboutmy friend who was
teaching
Engish to aduts in Abu Dhabi. And one fine
day,she decided to take them into the garden
to teach
them some nature it was she who
ended
up earning a the Arabic words for the
oca pants,as
we as their uses -- medicina
uses, cosmetics, cooking,
herba. How didthose
students get a that knowedge? Of
course, from
their grandparents andeven their
great-
grandparents. Its not necessary to te you how
important itis to be abe to communicate across
generations.

Ive seen a ot of changes. When I
first came
out to the Guf, I came toKuwait in the days
when it was sti a hardship post. Actuay, not
that
ongago. That is a itte bit too eary. But
nevertheess,
I was recruited by theBritish
Counci aong with about
25 other teachers. And
we were the firstnon-Musims
to teach in the
state schoos there in Kuwait. We were
brought
toteach Engish because the government wanted
to modernize the country andempower the
citizens
through education. And of course, the
U.K. benefited
fromsome of that ovey oi weath.

bandwagon for
every Engish-speaking nation on
why not?
After a, the best education --
according to the atest WordUniversity
Rankings -- is
to be found in the universities
of the U.K. and theU.S.
So everybody wants to
have an Engish education,
naturay. But if
yourenot a native speaker, you have
to pass a
test.

do. We Engish
teachers are the you have to
satisfy
us first that your Engish is good

dangerous to give too
much power to a narrow segment
of society.
Maybe thebarrier woud be too universa.

in Engish, the

there was ots
oftransation then. They
transated from Latin and
Greek into Arabic,
intoPersian, and then it was
transated on into
the Germanic anguages of Europeand
the Romance
anguages. And so ight shone upon the Dark
Ages
of Europe. Nowdont get me wrong; I am not against
teaching Engish, a you Engish teachersout
there. I
ove it that we have a goba anguage.
We need one today
morethan ever. But I am
against using it as a barrier.
Do we reay want
to end upwith 600 anguages and the
main one
being Engish, or Chinese? We need morethan
that. Where do we draw the ine? This system
equates
inteigence with aknowedge of Engish
which is quite
arbitrary.

tests

me, those
fees arent bad, theyre okay, but
they areprohibitive
to so many miions of poor
peope. So immediatey, were
rejectingthem.
