t important part
of the body is. Through the years I would guess at
the correct answer .
When I was younger , I
thought 36 was very important to us as humans ,
so I said , “My ears ,
Mummy .” She said ,
“No. Many people are 37 . But you keep thinking
about it and I will ask
you again soon.”
Several years passed before she asked me
again. Since making my first attempt, I had often
thought over the question . So this time I
told her , “Mummy , it must be our eyes .”She
looked at
me and said, “You are learning fast
, but the answer is not correct because there are
many people
who are blind.”
38 the years ,
mother asked me a couple more times and always her
response to my answers was ,
“No, but you are
getting 39 every year , my child.” Then last year
, my Grandpa 40 . Everybody
was heart broken .
Everybody was crying . My mum looked at me when it
was our 41 to say
our final good-bye to
Grandpa . She asked me , “Do you know the most
important body part yet ,
my dear?”
I was
42 when she was asking me this now . I always
thought this was a game between her and
me
.She saw the puzzlement on my face and told me ,
“This question is very important . It shows
that you have really 43 your life.” I saw her
eyes well up with tears . She said , “My dear ,
the
most important body part is your 44 .” I
asked , “Is it because they hold up your head?”
She
replied , “No , it is 45 on them a crying
friend or loved one can rest their head . I only
hope that
you have enough 46 and friends that
you will have a shoulder to cry on when you need
it.” Then
and there I understood the most
important body part is not a 47 one . It is
sympathetic(同情

Social changes
in Women’s lives
The greatest recent social
changes have been in the lives of women. During
the twentieth
century there has been a
remarkable shortening of the proportion(比例)of a
women’s life spent in
caring for children. A
woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth
century would probably have
been in her middle
twenties, and would be likely to have seven or
eight children, of whom four or
more lived
till they were five years old. By the time the
youngest was fifteen, the mother would
have
been in her early fifties and would expect to live
a further twenty years, during which custom,
opportunity and health made it unusual for her
to get paid work. Today women marry younger and
have fewer children. Usually a woman’s
youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-
five and
can be expected to live another
thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work
until retirement at
sixty. Even while she has
the care of children, her work is lightened by
household appliances(家
2
用电器)and convenient foods.
This
important change in women’s life-pattern has only
recently begun to have its full effect
on
women’s economic position. Even a few years ago
most girls left school at the first opportunity,
and most of them took a full-time job.
However, when they married, they usually left work
at once
and never returned to it. Today the
school-leaving age is sixteen, but many girls stay
at school
after that age, and though women
tend to marry younger, more married women stay at
work at
least until shortly before their first
child is born. Very many more afterwards return to
full or
part-time work.. Such changes have led
to a new relationship in marriage, with the
husband and
wife accepting a greater sharp
share of the duties and satisfactions of family
life, and with both
husband and wife sharing
more equally in providing the money, and returning
home, according to
their abilities and
interests of each of them.

Decreasing grain prices along
with growing costs of production means Chinese
farmers are
unlikely to see a significant rise
in income next year.
China's economic

Grain prices

last year, Ma, minister of the National
Development and Reform Commission, told an
annual meeting on development and reform held
over the weekend.
Meanwhile, prices of
production materials rose 9.1 per cent year on
year during the first 10
months.
The
situation makes it difficult to achieve a
highlighted(引起注意) as a new concept and
Vice-Minister of Agriculture Yin Chengjie also
said China's entry to the World Trade
Organization also creates hurdles for income
rises for the country's 780 million farmers.
Farmers' income is expected to increase by 8 per
cent this year, hitting the target set by the
central government at the beginning of this
year.
Last year, per capita net income
(个人平均纯收入),of Chinese farmers reached 2,936 yuan
(US$$362), up 6.8 per cent year on year, and
the highest increase since 1997.
Ma also
said China would continue to seek fast, steady
economic growth in 2006 but more
efforts will
be made to deal with the challenges brought about
by overheating in some industrial
sectors
(区域). (from China
Daily, December 5, 2005)

To us it seems so natural to put up an
umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But
actually the umbrella was not invented as
protection against the rain. Its first use was as
a shade
against the sun.
Nobody knows who
first invented it, but the umbrella was used in
very ancient times.
Probably the first to use
it were Chinese, back in the eleventh century B.C.
We know that the umbrella was used in ancient
Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there
was
a strange thing connected with its use; it become
a symbol of honor. In the Far East in ancient
times, the umbrella was allowed to be used
only by those in high office.
In Europe, the
Greek were the first to use the umbrella as a
sunshade. And the umbrella was
in common used
in ancient Greeks. But it is believed that the
first persons in Europe to use the
umbrella as
protection against the rain were the ancient
Romans.
6
During the Middle
Ages, the use of the umbrella practically
disappeared. Then it appeared
again in Italy
in the late sixteenth century. And again it was
considered as a symbol of power. By
1680, the
umbrella appeared in France, and later on in
England.
By the eighteenth century, the
umbrella was used against rain throughout most of
Europe.
Umbrellas have not changed much in
style during all this time, though they have
become much
lighter in weight. It wasn’t until
the twentieth century that women’s umbrella began
to be made, in
whole variety of colors.

There are amazing
things in the world. The story about Nessie, the
Loch Ness Monster, is
one of the widely spread
legends(传说)in the early 20
th
century.
On 22 July 1933, two visitors, Mr and Mrs George
Spicer, were driving along one of the
most
famous lakes in the highlands of Scotland.
Suddenly, they saw an animal on the road in front
of them. Unlike any other animals that they
had seen before, it had a very big body and a
small
head, but no legs. When Mr and Mrs
Spicer saw it, it was moving towards the lake like
a snake.
Later on, the animal was described
like a long black or green dinosaur, and it was
informally
called Nessie.
Soon, stories
about this strange animal and Loch Ness became
famous all over the world.
Now people are
still interested in Nessie and many visit Loch
Ness in the hope of seeing Nessie.
Some
scientists think that Nessie is not a monster(怪兽)
at all, but a very large animal such
as a
seal, or perhaps a shark or a whale. Other
scientists do not think so. They think it may be
something unusual that lives in the water.
Anyway, they are all sure that a kind of large
animal
lives in the lake and believe that they
are going to find out what it is some day.

Recently there has been a heated debate about
whether high school students should have mobile
phones in school. The majority of students
think that it is more convenient for them to keep
in
touch with their parents and classmates if
they have a mobile phone. And what’s more, it’s a
fashion.
However, most teachers think
that middle school students are not old enough to
control
8
themselves. It is a
waste of time for students to play games and send
messages to each other by
mobile phone. Also
it causes the students to vie with each other. If
necessary, they can make phone
calls by using
public phones on campus.
In my opinion,
following the fashion is understandable. But as
high school students, we
should put our energy
into our studies.
