1 美国学生在学校怎么吃午餐?
Is lunch your _____ part of the school day? The school lunches I ____ up with may be
different from yours.

Just like in China, schools in the US do _____ lunch for students. But when I was a kid, it
was also common for us to bring our own lunches to school. Every day, parents had to think
about making a ___ (可口的) and _____ lunch for their children; kids could forget their
lunch, or have a ____ (校园恶霸) steal it.

And that’s not all. Most US schools, after a certain age, ____ kids to go out for lunch. US
kids can also get a driver’s _____ (驾照) when they turn 16. After my friends and I turned
16, we would drive away from school and find something to eat. A common place for us to
eat was our town’s _____ (超市), where they served fried chicken. After eating, we’d go to
the park for a walk before we had to go back to class.

2 这只宠物狗有什么不一样?

Do you want a pet, but ____ about taking care of it? Aibo might be a good ____for you.
Aibo is a robot (机器人) dog. It is made by Sony. It isn’t as difficult to take care of as a ___
pet.

Aibo’s _____ intelligence (人工智能) makes it act like a real dog. It can wag (摇摆) its tail,
shake your hand and play a ball. Aibo can move its ears back and forth. It can also ___ (眨
眼) its eyes. There are sensors (传感器) on Aibo’s head, chin (下巴) and back. When you
____ it, it feels ______ (得到安慰的) like a real pet would. Aibo can understand different
words, such as “sit”, “stay”, and “come”.

Another ______ thing about Aibo is that it can “learn”. The robot can remember its daily
experiences. This helps it build a database (数据库). The robot can “grow” and change itself
according to this database. Over time, Aibo can have its own personality (性格). This makes
it more like a real pet.

Three different names for ancient China’s people
为什么古人不只有“姓”“名”,还有“字”?

Why did Chinese people have more than one name in _____ times?
In ancient China, people’s names had three parts: their ____ name, ____ name and
courtesy [ˈkɜ:təsi] name (字).
Take famous poet Li Bai as an example. His family name was Li, his given name was Bai,
and his courtesy name was Taibai.
People used their _____ names when they were among family members. But in social life,
they called each other by their ______ names to show respect. This was mostly done
among people of similar age. If you were talking about yourself, or if your elders were
talking about you, the given name would be used instead of the courtesy name.
Men would get their _____ name when they turned 20. It was a symbol (标志) of adulthood
(成人). Women would get their courtesy name after getting married.
One’s courtesy name often had something to do with one’s given name. For example,
Mencius’ name was Meng Ke (孟轲). His courtesy name was Ziyu (子舆). Both Ke and Ziyu
mean “carriage (马车)”. Zhuge Liang’s given name was Liang, which means “bright”. His
courtesy name was Kongming (孔明), which means “very bright”.
