Comprehension (40%)第1部分阅读理解(40%)
1. 重点What
kind of environment do you want in the future? 1-5
C D A D A
What kind of environment do you want
in the future? What can you do to help make it
happen? What can other people do?
Education is
one way to help the environment. You can learn
about the environment in school. Radio and TV can
give you
learn. Laws can also help the
environment. There are laws against littering and
against making the air and water dirty. Other
laws help people to save resources. The law
lowering the speed limit for cars helps to save
fuel.
But people don’t have to wait for
laws to be passed. They can do things on their
own. They can protest against products
that
hurt the environment.
Another way to help
the environment is to plan for the future. We may
have to find new resources. In the future, people
may heat their homes with atomic power. Maybe
they will use energy from the sun. Without
planning, some kinds of
environment may not
happen. People can act now to help make the
future.
1. How many ways are there that can
help the environment? What are they? ( C )

3. 重点 Inside a can
the food is protected from the things that would
11- 15 B D A D C
Inside a can the food is
protected from the things that would make it
spoil. These are bacteria, the tiny little living
plants that
are everywhere around us.
Bacteria, sometimes called germs, are so tiny that
we can see them only under a microscope. But
they are so powerful.
Like all living
things, bacteria need food to grow. When they grow
they multiply. A few bacteria become many in a
matter of
minutes. When bacteria settle on
food, they make changes in it. These changes are
what we call spoiling.
To keep food from
spoiling, we must first kill any bacteria that may
already be in it. Heat and cooking do this. Next
we must
keep any bacteria in the air away from
the food. So we pack it into cans as airless as we
can make them. We seal the cans tight.
With no
bacteria in the food and no air with bacteria able
to reach it, fruits, fish, meat and vegetables
will stay unspoiled in a
can for years.
11. Bacteria can only be seen under a
microscope because __________ . ( B ) they are so
tiny
12. The heating and cooking is done
__________ . ( D ) to kill the bacteria already in
the food
13. How do bacteria multiply ? ( A )
Very rapidly
14. What are the changes which
the bacteria make in food called ? ( D )Spoiling
15. Food is canned ___________ . ( C )to
preserve it for a period of years
4. 重点The
word “sport” first meant something that people did
in ….16-20 CABDC
The word ―sport‖ first
meant something that people did in their free
time. Later it often meant hunting wild animals
and
birds. About a hundred years ago the word
was first used for organized games. This is the
usual meaning of the word today.
People spend
a lot of their time playing football, basketball,
tennis and many other sports. Such people play
because they
want to. A few people are paid
for the sport they play. These people are called
professional sportsmen. They may be
sportsmen
for only a few years, but during their time the
best ones can earn a lot of money.
For
example, a professional footballer in England
earns more than 30,000 pounds a year. The stars
earn a lot more.
International golf and tennis
champions can make more than50, 000 in a year. Of
course, only few sportsmen can earn as
much
money as that. It is only possible in sports for
individuals, like golf, tennis and motor-racing.
Perhaps the most
surprising thing about
sportsmen and money is this: the stars can earn
more money from advertising than from sport. An
advertisement for sports equipment does not
simply say ―Buy our things‖. It says: ―Buy the
same shirt and shoes as …‖
Famous sportsmen
can even advertise things like watches and food.
They allow the companies to use their names or a
photograph of them and they are paid for this.
Sport is no longer just something for people’s
spare time.
16. What is the meaning of the
word ―sport‖ today according to the passage? ( C )
Organized games.
17. According to the passage,
which of the following statements is true? ( A ) .
People play sports whenever they want to.
18.
What kinds of people are called professional
sportsmen? ( B ). Those who are paid for the sport
they play.
19. When it comes to how much a
professional footballer in England can earn, which
of the following is true? ( D )The stars
earn
a lot more than common professional footballers
do.
20. What does the passage tell us? ( C )
C. As time goes on, sport is no longer just
something for people’s spare time.

Jupiter Communications, a market research firm,
..72%....1-5 C D D B C
Jupiter Communications,
a market research firm, reports that 72% of
teenagers in the United States will be online by
2003
(Stanton, 2000). This alone indicates
that students will learn and communicate
electronically more than any previous
generation. At the same time, teenagers are
not the only digital learners. With the growing
number of online courses, the
increasing
accessibility of computers, and the increasing
number of computer users, students of all ages are
taking advantage
of distance learning or are
using computers to enhance the traditional
classroom experience.
Two things emerge in
the study of students’ attitudes toward online
learning: individual situations impact students’
perceptions of computer-based learning and
students’ varied individual characteristics make
it difficult to define their
perceptions
conclusively. For example, some students have
their own computers, while others rely on computer
labs. Such
variation in computer access can
result in attitudinal differences. In addition,
the purpose of computer use varies. Distance
education courses, for example, use computers
in different ways than traditional classrooms,
which can also affect students’
perceptions. A
wide variety of achievement levels and attitudes
exist among both online and traditional learners.
Although an
illusory ―typical learner‖ exists,
a variety of factors, including students’ gender,
age, and motivation, could explain different
reactions among the student population.
1.
What will make online learning more and more
popular? (C) The increase of computer users.
2.
Who may become online learners? (D)
People of all ages and backgrounds.
3.
According to the passage, what does (D)
Online learners.
4.
Which of the following
is the main factor that makes it difficult to
define students' perceptions of online learning
definitely?
(B) Learners' varied
characteristics.
5.
What is the author's
attitude towards online learning? (C) positive
6. Ever since humans have inhabited the
earth, 6-10 A C B C A
Ever since humans
have inhabited the earth, they have made use of
various forms of communication. Generally, this
expression of thoughts and feelings has been
in the form of oral speech. When there is a
language barrier, communication is
accomplished through sign language in which
motions stand for letters, words and ideas.
Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have
had to
resort to this form of expression. Many of these
symbols of whole words are very picturesque and
exact and can be
used
internationally;
spelling, however, cannot. Body language transmits
ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either
intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can
be a way of flirting or indicating that the party
is only joking. A nod signifies
approval,
while shaking the head indicates a negative
reaction. Other forms of nonlinguistic language
can be found in Braille
(a system of raised
dots read with the fingertips), signal flags,
Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and
picture signs
also guide, warn, and instruct
people. While verbalization is the most common
form of language, other systems and
techniques
also express human thoughts and feelings.
6.
Which of the following best summarizes this
passage?
(A) When language is a barrier,
people will find other forms of communication.
7.
Which of the following statements is
not true according to the passage?
(C) The
deaf and mute do not need sign language for
communication.
8.
Which form other than
oral speech would be most commonly used among
blind people? (B) Braille.
9.
How many
different forms of communication are mentioned
here? (C) 8 — 10
10.
Sign language is said
to be very picturesque and exact and can be used
internationally as it doesn't represent _____. (A)
spellings
7. Some people seem to have a
knack for learning languages. 11-15 C C A B D
Some people seem to have a knack for
learning languages. They can pick up new
vocabulary, master rules of grammar,
and learn
to write in the new language more quickly than
others. They do not seem to be any more
intelligent than others, so
what makes
languages so much easier for them to learn?
Perhaps if we take a close look at these
successful language learners
we may
discover a few of the techniques that make
language learning easier for them.
First of
all, successful language learners are independent
learners. They do not depend on the book or the
teacher. They
discover their own way to learn
the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher
to explain, they try to find the patterns and the
rules for themselves. They try to learn from
their mistakes.
Successful language
learning is active learning. Therefore, they do
not wait for a chance to use the language. Instead
they look for such a chance. They will try
anything to communicate. They are not afraid to
repeat what they hear and to say
strange
things. They are willing to make mistakes and try
again. When communication is difficult, they can
accept
information that is inexact or
incomplete. It is more important for them to learn
to think in the language than to know the
meaning of every word.
Finally,
successful language learners are learners with a
purpose. They want to learn the language because
they are
interested in the language and the
people who speak it. It is necessary for them to
learn language in order to communicate
with
these people and to learn from them. They find it
easy to practice using the language regularly
because they want to learn
it.
11.
The
best learners of languages ______. (C) have the
best language learning techniques
12.
People who learn languages easily seem to have
a _______ for learning them. (C) knack
13.
According to the passage the key factor in
language learning is probably____. (A) the learner
14.
Successful language learners are
_______, ______ learners with a purpose. (B)
independent, active
15.
Successful
language learners learn the language by
_____________.( D) trying to communicate and
learning from
mistakes
8. During sleep,
the fatigue (疲劳) of the body 16-20 A D D C D
During sleep, the fatigue (疲劳) of the body
disappears and recuperation ( 恢复) begins. The
tired mind gathers new
energy. Once awake, the
memory improves, and annoyance and problems are
seen in a better perspective.
Some adults
require little sleep; others need eight to ten
hours in every twenty-four. Infants sleep sixteen
to eighteen
hours daily and, as they grow
older, the amount gradually diminishes. Young
students may need twelve hours; university
students may need ten. A worker with a
physically demanding job may also need ten,
whereas an executive worker under
great
pressure may manage on six to eight. Many famous
people are reputed to have required little sleep.
Napoleon, Thomas
Edison and Charles Darwin
apparently averaged only four to six hours a
night.
Whatever your individual need, you
can be sure that by the age of thirty you will
have slept for a total of more than
twelve
years. By that age you will also have developed a
sleep routine: a favorite hour, a favorite bed, a
favorite position, and
a formula you need to
follow in order to rest comfortably.
Investigators have tried to find out how long a
person can go without sleep. Several people have
reached more than 115
hours? nearly five days,
whereas animals kept awake for from five to eight
days have died of exhaustion. The limit for human
beings is probably about a week.
16.
The writer implies that _________.
( A)
sleep is important for good mental and physical
health
17.
From the amount of sleep
Napoleon, Edison and Darwin required, we can infer
that_______.
( D) they were involved in
mentally demanding work
18.
The amount of
sleep required ________. ( D) all of the above.
19.
According to the passage, the sleeping
routine will be built at the age of _________. (
C) 30
20.
From animal experiments, we can
conclude that the final result of the lack of
sleep is probably __. ( D) death
9. College
brings together people from all walks of life.
21-25 A C B D B
College brings together
people from all walks of life. There are so many
different types of people in the world but if you
go to a college campus, you are sure to find
at least one of every kind. The great part about
being here with so many different
people is
that you get to interact with some interesting
characters and see how to deal with them. You will
meet the people
you dread the most, the
smart-ass, the brain, or the unique spirit, but no
matter who it is that is your worst nightmare to
be
around you will always be paired up with
them in a group project. When you get into the
real world you are not going to be
able to
pick your boss or coworkers. Interacting with
these people in college and living with different
roommates will help
you learn how to cooperate
with the people in life you find so unpleasant.
College life is fun. The fact that I have been
here
for a short time just means it has not
yet been a life changing experience to me. If I
were to give any tips on how to survive, it
would not be how to survive college, but how
to survive life. I would have to say that one
should be outgoing and live life to
the
fullest. Meet new people whenever you can because
they just may be a major influence in your life.
Also, get your work
done before you go out and
party. Lastly, I would have to say, in life if you
ever feel lost or alone, talk to someone about it.
Everyone gets depressed at times in their life
and there is always someone who will listen to
your problems.
21. What is the theme of the
passage? ( A) Relationships in college.
22.
What does the author say about group projects? (
C) Partners may not cooperate.
23. Why does
the author recommend meeting many new people? ( B)
They may influence your life.
24. How would
you describe the author's personality? ( D)
Optimistic and outgoing.
25. What does the
author say to do if you're depressed? ( B) Talk to
someone about it.
10. Women have made great
strides since then ….26-30 D B A C C
Women
have made great strides since then in achieving
political equality. Recently, American feminists
have been working
hard to achieve social and
economic equality as well as political. Their
belief is that, as there is nothing that women
cannot do
just as well as men, they should be
shown the same respect and have the same social
rights and the same pay as their male
counterparts. Anything less is discrimination
and sexism.
Few American girls agree with the
extreme feminists who deride marriage and romantic
love, but more and more of them are
prepared
to live with a man outside marriage, often with
the intention of buying a home and marrying only
when, between
them, they have saved enough
money. Young couples today share both the
household chores and care of the baby.
The old
generations, especially those that live in the
city suburbs, are bewildered and disturbed by this
trend. It is all against
the great American
tradition of the
The American woman makes the
most of her free time. She helps with political
campaigns. She sits on committees. She goes
to
classes of all kinds, from health foods to English
literature, from environmental studies to karate.
She swims, plays tennis,
and she takes an
active interest in her children's education. In
most of these activities her companions are other
housewives
from her neighborhood.
There
are women executives of some important industries
and businesses. In fact there are women in most
jobs which were
formerly reserved for men.
There are women lawyers, doctors, architects, as
well as women bus drivers, but the ordinary
working women will earn less than a man gets
for doing the same job although there is a law
which makes this illegal.
American girls tend
to marry young, which means that 60% of the women
in work are married. This also helps to explain
why
so many young married couples have such a
high standard of living.
American women seem
to have more self-confidence than women from most
other countries. For years they have felt no
inferiority whatsoever to the male sex.
Therefore visitors to the USA rarely meet militant
feminists.
26. American feminists believe
that women have .
( D)not got
enough social and economical equality as well as
political one.
27. Which of the following is
true according to Paragraph 2?(B)Most American
girls believe that there exists true love
between men and women.
28. According to
the passage, more and more boys and girls choose
to get married when .
( A )they have
made enough money for their marriage
29. . In
a newly-married couple's family, who might take
care of the baby?( C) both wife and husband
30. In her spare time, the American woman
enjoys being involved in all the following
activities except .( C)
scientific
research
11. The names of certain
places in the United States …. 31-35 C A B B D
The names of certain places in the United
States make people think of big businesses.
Detroit, a city in Michigan, means cars.
Texas
means oil. Wall Street in New York means the stock
market and ―big money‖.
There is another
place-name that is well known in the U.S.A. That
is Madison Avenue. Madison Avenue in New York is
the
place where many advertising companies
have their offices. And advertising is one of the
biggest businesses in America.
The same kinds
of things are produced and sold by many different
companies in the U.S. Many different companies
sell cars;
many others sell oil. Many
different companies sell soap, tires, and so on.
Each company wants the public to buy its products.
By advertising these companies make the public
interested in what they want to sell.
Each
company pays advertisers to tell the public about
its product. Suppose a company has new breakfast
cereal that it wants
to sell. In an
advertising office on Madison Avenue plans are
made for telling the public about this product.
The advertising
company takes beautiful
pictures of people eating the cereal. These
pictures appear in newspapers or magazines and
also on
TV.
31. Detroit reminds people of
_____________. ( C) cars
32. Madison
Avenue is very famous because ____________.
(A)it is a place where many advertising
companies have their offices
33. Why do people
advertise their products ?
(B)Different
companies produce and sell the same products.
34. The advertising of a new breakfast cereal
is mentioned in the passage to show ___________.
(B)how a certain product is advertised
35.
What is the main idea of the passage ?
(D)Advertising is a very big business in America.
12. It is easy to show that intelligence is
to some …. 36-40 B C A D B
It is easy to show
that intelligence is to some extent something we
are born with. The closer the blood relationship
between
two people, the closer they are likely
to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two
unrelated people at random from the
population, it is likely that their degrees of
intelligence will be completely different. If on
the other hand we take two identical
twins,
they will very likely be as intelligent as each
other. Relations like brothers and sisters,
parents and children, usually
have similar
intelligence, and this clearly suggests that
intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now
that we take two identical twins and put them in
different environments. We might send one, for
example, to a
university and the other to a
factory where the work is boring. We would soon
find differences in intelligence developing, and
this indicates that environment as well as
birth plays a part. This conclusion is also
suggested by the fact that people who live
in
close contact with each other, but who are not
related at all, are likely to have similar degrees
of intelligence.
36. According to the passage,
two unrelated people randomly taken from the
population _______.
(B) are very likely to
have different intelligence
37. The example
that two identical twins are very likely as
intelligent as each other shows that
_____________.
(C)blood relationship is very
important in determining a person’s intelligence
38. What conclusion can be drawn from the
example of two twins going to a university and to
a factory separately?
(A)Environment makes a
difference between the intelligence degrees of two
twins.
39. According to the passage, which of
the following statements is correct?(D)People who
are not related at all have
completely
different degrees of intelligence.
40. What’s
the main idea of this passage?(B)Two identical
twins are as intelligent as each other.
13. A
young man who served as a drum-player in a band,
…. 41-45 B D A C B
A young man who served as
a drum-player in a band, had just married, and he
and his wife were looking for somewhere to
live. They saw a lot of places, but there was
always something that one of them did not like
about them. At last, however, they
found a new
house which both of them really like. However,
there was still the problem of whether they should
take one of
the ground-floor rooms, which had
a small garden, or one of the upstairs ones.
At last they decided on the first-floor
room – not too low down and not high up – and
moved in. After they had bought
everything
they needed, they gave a big party for setting up
of their first home together.
It was a
cheerful and noise party, as all the friends from
the band came with their violins and drums. The
guests danced, sang
and played noisily.
Soon after one a.m. the telephone rang. The
wife went to answer it in the hall, and after she
finished, she came back with a
happy smile on
her face and said to her husband, ―that was the
man who has just moved into the room downstairs
telephoning,
dear, I’m so glad we decides not
to choose it. He says it is terribly noise down
there‖.
41. Why did the couple hold a party?
(B ) They wanted to celebrate the setting up
of their first home.
42. Which aspect of the
ground-floor rooms attracted the couple before
they decided on one of the first-floor rooms?
(D )The ground-floor rooms had a small garden.
43. The party was noisy and cheerful because
________________.
(A )all their friends from
the band came with their musical instruments
44. What did the wife think about their
decision after she received the telephone call?
(C )They were lucky because they did not move
into the ground-floor room.
45. What did the
man in the ground-floor room want to do?
(B
)To complain about the noise coming from upstairs.
14. A great French writer has ever said that
we should help…. 46-50 B B B A D
A great
French writer has ever said that we should help
everyone as possible as we can because we often
need help
ourselves. The small can even help
the great. To this effect, he tells us the
following story.
An ant was drinking at a
small stream and fell in. She made desperate
efforts to reach the side, but made no progress at
all.
The poor ant, almost exhausted, was still
bravely trying her best when a dove saw her. Moved
with pity the bird threw her a
blade of grass,
which supported her like a raft, and thus she
reached the bank again. While she was resting and
drying herself
in the grass she heard a man
approaching. The man was walking along barefooted
and carrying a gun in his hand. As soon as
he
saw the dove he wished to kill her, and he would
certainly have done so, but the ant bit him in the
foot just as he raised his
gun to fire. He
stopped to see what was biting him, and the dove
immediately flew away. It was an insect much
weaker and
smaller than herself that he had
saved her life.
46. Where was the ant making
desperate efforts? ( B) In the water
47. The
ant tried to reach the side _____________. ( B)
but failed
48. The ant finally reached the
bank __________. ( B) with the help of a blade of

Passage One
In ancient times wealth was
measured and exchanged in things that could be
touched: food, tools, and precious metals
and
stones. Then the barter system was replaced by
coins, which still had real value since they were
pieces of rare metal.
Coins were followed by
fiat money, paper notes that have value only
because everyone agrees to accept them.
Today electronic monetary systems are gradually
being introduced that will transform money into
even less tangible
forms, reducing it to a
series of ―bits and bytes‖, or units of
computerized information, going between machines
at the speed
of light. Already, electronic
fund transfer allows money to be instantly sent
and received by different banks, companies, and
countries through computers and
telecommunications devices.
61. Which of the
following would be the most appropriate title for
the passage?
A. International Banking
Policies B. The History of Monetary Exchange
C. The Development of Paper Currencies D. Current
Problems in the Economy

rapid money transfers.
They are still
limited to small transactions (交易).
They are
dependent on good telecommunications systems.
Passage Two
At the University of Kansas art
museum, scientists tested the effect of different
colored walls on two groups of visitors to
an
exhibit of paintings. For the first group the room
was painted white; for the second, dark brown.
Movement of each group
was followed by an
electrical equipment under the carpet. The
experiment showed that those who entered the dark
brown
walked more quickly, covered more area,
and spent less time in the room than people in the
white one. Dark brown made
people more active,
but the activity ended sooner. Not only the choice
of colors but also the general appearance of a
room
affects those inside. Another experiment
presented people with photographs of faces whose
energy was to be commented.
Three groups of
people were used; each was shown the same photos,
but each group was in an ordinary room—a nice
office.
The third was in a tastefully designed
living room with carpeting. Results showed that
the people in the beautiful room tend to
give
higher marks to the faces than those in the ugly
room did. Other studies that students do better on
tests taken in

The
University of Kansas has studied the effects of
the color of room on people’s behavior
Beautifully furnished, light-coloured rooms make
people more comfortable than ugly, dark rooms

A. Three B. Two C. Only one D. No one knows
Passage Three
The water we drink and use is
running short in the world. We all have to learn
how to stop wasting our limited water.
One of
the steps we should take is to find ways of
reusing it. Experiments have already been done in
this field.
Today in most large cities,
fresh water is used only once, then it runs into
waste system. But it is possible to pipe the
used water to a purifying factory. There it
can be filtered and treated with chemicals so that
it can be used again, just as it
were fresh
from a spring.
But even if every large city
purified and reused its water, we still would not
have enough. Then we could turn to the
oceans.
All we’d have to do to make use of the seawater on
earth is to get rid of the salt. This process is
called desalinization,
and it is already in
use in many parts of the world.
71. The way
to stop wasting our limited water is to ________.
A. do experiments with water B. purify the
used water and reuse it
C. use fresh water
once again D. make use of seawater
72. The following tells us how to reuse the used
water. Which is the right order of the passage?
A. to have the used water filtered B. to put
chemicals in it
C. to pipe it to the users
D. to pipe the used water to be purified to a
factory
73. There wouldn’t be enough water
for us if we didn’t _________.
A. turn to
the oceans for more water B. reuse used water and
make use of seawater
C. desalt seawater D.
take steps to reuse all water on earth
74.
The would ―it‖ in the last sentence refers to
_______.
A. seawater B. purified water
C. the process of getting rid of the salt in
seawater
D. the process of collecting salt
from the sea oceans
75. The best title for
the passage is ―_______‖.
A. How to Reuse
Water
B. Two Solutions to the Problem of
Water Shortage
C. Stop Wasting Our Limited
Water
D. How to Make Use of Seawater
Passage Four
Some people hate everything
that is modern. They cannot imagine how anyone can
really like modern music; they find it
hard to
accept the new fashions in clothing; they think
that all modern painting is ugly; and they seldom
have a good word for
the new buildings that
are being built everywhere in the world. Such
people look for perfection in everything, and they
take
their standards of perfection from the
past. They are usually impatient with anyone who
is brave enough to experiment with
new or to
express himself or the age in materials original
ways. It is, of course, true that many artists do
not succeed in their
work and instead produce
works that can only be considered as failures. If
the work of art is a painting, the artist’s
failure
concerns himself alone, but if it is a
building, his failure concerns others too, because
it may damage the beauty of the whole
place.
This does sometimes happen, but it is completely
untrue to say, as some people do, that modern
architecture is nothing.
We can’t judge
every modern building by the standards of the
ancient time, even though we admire the ancient
buildings.
Technologically, the modern
buildings are more advanced. The modern architect
knows he should learn from the ancient
works,
but with his greater resources of knowledge and
materials, he will never be content to imitate the
past. He is too proud
to do that.
76.
Some people hate everything that is modern because
_______.
A. they are aged
B. they find it
hard to accept modern things
C. they take
their standards of perfection from the Greek
D. they look at things by the standards of the
past
77. The writer of the passage thinks
that ________.
it is true to say artists
fail in their work
it is untrue to say
artists fail in their work
it is true to say
some artists fail in their work
it is true
to say only painters fail in their work
78.
The writer thinks the failure of a building
_______.
A. means nothing B. concerns others
C. concerns only the artist D. concerns all
the people in the world
79. The writer
thinks that _________.
we can’t judge
buildings by the ancient standards
we can’t
judge all the buildings by the ancient standards
we can’t judge all the modern
buildings by the ancient standards
we can’t
judge modern buildings
80. Technologically,
the modern buildings are more advanced. The
sentence means _____.
the ancient architects
had no technology
the modern architects use
more advanced technology
the modern
buildings are advanced because they are completely
different from the ancient buildings
the
modern buildings are more beautiful

Passage
Two
Deep inside a mountain near Sweetwater in
East. Tennessee is a body of water known as the
Lost Sea. It is listed by the
Guinness Book of
Would Records as the world’s largest underground
lake. The Lost Sea is part of an extensive and
historic
cave system called Craighead Caverns.
The caverns have been known and used
since the days of the Cherokee Indian nation. The
cave expands into a series of huge
rooms from
a small opening on the side of the mountain.
Approximately one mile from the entrance, in a
room called ―The
Council Room,‖ many Indian
artisfacts have been found. Some of the items
discovered include pottery, arrowheads, weapons,
and jewelry.
For many years there were
persistent rumors of a large underground lake
somewhere in a cave, but it was not discovered
until 1905. In that year, a thirteen-year-old
boy named Ben Sands crawled through a small
opening three hundred feet
underground. He
found himself in a large cave half filled with
water.
Today tourists visit the Lost Sea and
ride far out onto it in glass-bottomed boats
powered by electric motors. More than
thirteen
acres of water have been mapped out so far and
still no end to the lake has been found. Even
though teams of divers
have tried to explore
the Lost Sea, the full extent of it is still
unknown.

Passage Three
Generations of Americans have been brought up to
believe that a good breakfast is one life’s
essentials. Eating breakfast at
the start of
the day, we have all been told, and told again, is
as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car
before starting a
trip.
But for many
people the thought of food first thing in the
morning is by no means a pleasure. So despite all
the efforts, they
still take no breakfast.
Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which
figures are available, the number of people who
didn’t have breakfast, increased by 33
percent.
For those who feel pain of guilt
about not eating breakfast, however, there is some
good news. Several studies in the last few
years indicate that, for adults especially,
there may be nothing wrong with omitting
breakfast. ―Going without breakfast does
not
affect performance,‖ said Arrold E. Bender, former
professor of the nutrition at Queen Elizabeth
College in London, ―nor
does giving people
breakfast improve performance.‖
Scientific
evidence linking breakfast to better health or
better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and
most of the recent
work involves children, not
adults, ―The literature‖, says one researcher, Dr.
Erresto at the University of Texas, ―is poor‖.
71. The latest year for which figures could
be obtained is _______.
A. the year the
author wrote the article B. 1977
C. any year
between 1997 and 1983 D. 1983
72. For those
who do not take breakfast, the good news is that
_______.
several studies have been
done in the past few years
the omission of
breakfast does no harm to one’s health
adults
have especially made studies in this field
eating little in the morning is good for health
73. ―…nor does giving people breakfast
improve performance‖ means ______.
anyone
without breakfast does improve his performance
not giving people breakfast improve
performance
having breakfast does not improve
performance, either
people having breakfast
do improve their performance
74. The word
―literature‖ in the last sentence refers to
_______.
A. stories, poems, plays, etc. B.
written works on a particular subject
C. any
printed material D. the modern literature of
America
75. What is implied but NOT stated by
the author is that _______.
breakfast does
not affect performance
Dr. Erresto is engaged
in research work at an institution of higher
learning
not eating breakfast might affect
the health of children
Professor Bender once
taught college courses in nutrition in London
Passage Four
About 35% of all high school
graduates in America continue their education in
an institution of higher learning. The word
college is used to refer to either a college
or a university. These institutions offer four-
year programs that lead to a Bachelor of
Arts
(B.A.) or Bachelor Science (B.S.) degree. Some
students attend a junior college (providing only a
two-year program) for
one to two years before
entering a four-year college as a sophomore (二年级生)
or junior (三年级生).
It is generally easier to
be accepted at a state university than at a
private one. Most private schools require strict
entrance
examinations and a high grade point
average (GPA), as well as specific college prep
classes in high school. Private schools
cost
considerably more than state colleges and famous
private schools are very expensive. Poorer
students can sometimes
attend, however, by
earning scholarships. Some college graduates go on
to earn advanced masters or doctoral degrees in
grad
(graduate) school. Occupations in certain
fields such as law or medicine require such
advanced studies.
Since college costs are
very high, most students work at part-time jobs.
Some have full-time jobs and go to school part-
time.
Often some will take five or more years
to complete a four-year program because of money
job demands on their time.
While the college
and work demands take up the great part of a
student’s time, most still enjoy social
activities. Sports,
dances, clubs, movies, and
plays are all very popular. However, gathering
together for long, philosophical talks at a
favorite
meeting place on or near the
university is probably the most popular activity.
76. College education is _______ in America.
A. quite common B. very rare
C.
something difficult D. almost impossible
77.
Which of the following is NOT required for
entering most private schools.
A. entrance
examinations B. taking part in many activities
C. GPA D. college prep classes
78. How
can poor students attend private schools?
A.
Only by working at part-time jobs. B. Only by
working at full-time jobs.
C. Only by earning
scholarships. D. All of above.
79. The
American college students like to _______ most of
all.
A. discuss problems on philosophy B.
play balls
C. earn enough money D. go to the
cinemas or theatres
80. The best title
for this passage is _______.
A. Part-time
jobs B. American college
C. Popular activity
D. A new system
