The first period
A. Pat is making a birthday calendar. Koko is talking to her. Listen,



look and say.
Presentation
1. Bring in a large wall calendar in English.
2. Show the pupils the wall calendar. Say This is a calendar. Point to
each month. Tell the pupils This is one month. Show the pupils and
read aloud the names of the week from Sunday to Saturday.
Teacher: There are seven days in a week. They are Sunday, Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Tell the pupils to use ‘and’ before the last item in the
list.
3. Ask the pupils How many months are there? Ask them to say after me
the names of the months in order.
T: There are twelve months in a year. They are January, February,
March …
4. Show Transparency. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette and point to the
speech bubbles. Ask the pupils to repeat after the cassette.
Practice
1. Read the conversation between Pat and Koko. Ask the pupils to repeat
the conversation after me. Let them finish reciting the names of the
months by themselves.
2. Ask the pupils Which month is it? What’s the date today?
Play a game
1. Make a quiz for the pupils. Write the names of the months using the letters in the
wrong order. Also mix up the order of the months, for example, GASTUU=
August. Tell the pupils to unscramble the letters. See who can be first to finish.
2. Play Bingo using the months of the year.

Ask individual pupils When‟s your birthday? Get them to answer My birthday is
in (month).
Practice
1. Show Transparency. Play the Pupil‟s Book Cassette. Explain that Tim is going to
use his saved money to buy Grandma a present.



2. Read the conversation and ask the class to read it after me. Practise the falling
intonation for the question When‟s Grandma‟s birthday?
3. Demonstrate the conversation in picture 2. Get the pupils to repeat the
conversation after me.
4. Ask two pupils to role-play Tim and his mother in picture 2.
5. Tell the pupils to work in pairs. Ask them to look at picture 3, 4 and 5 and
role-play Tim and his mother.
6. Ask When‟s …‟s birthday? about the people in the thought bubbles in pictures 2,
3, 4 and 5.

Get the pupils to work in pairs to ask each other When‟s your birthday?
B2. Koko is making a list of her friends’ birthdays. Listen, say and act.
Presentation
1. Write the numbers 1 to 20 on the board in a row. Tell the pupils that when we say
the date we add th to most numbers. Add th to numbers 4 to 20.
2. Point to number 1. Ask the pupils if they know what we add to 1 when we say
dates. Write st and say we have a special way of saying number one when it‟s a
date. We say first. Write the word first on the board. Ask the pupils to say the
word after me.
3. Repeat the procedure to teach second and third. Continue by showing the pupils
how the spelling changes for fifth, ninth, twelfth and twentieth. Write 21, 22 and
23 underneath 1, 2 and 3. Ask the pupils to guess how we write twenty-first,
twenty-second and twenty-third. Ask the pupils to guess how to spell thirtieth and
how to change 31 into a date. Tell the pupils to count with me from first to
thirty-first.
4. Ask a pupil to stand up and tell the class My birthday is in (month). Invite the
other pupils to guess when hisher birthday is. Model the way to ask by guessing
myself, e.g. Is your birthday on June twenty- third? Check that the pupils are
saying on rather than in and that the th at the end of the ordinal number is clear.
Practice
1. Show Transparency. Explain that Koko is asking her friends about their birthdays.
Read Koko and Ken‟s conversation and ask the pupils to repeat it after me.
2. Ask the pupils to work in pairs to role-play Koko and Ken.

B3. Listen and circle the correct dates.
Show the pupils there are three dates next to the picture of each child. Play the



Pupil‟s Book Cassette. Tell the pupils to listen and circle the correct dates.
C. A story: Great-grandpa’s birthday.
1. Point to the characters in the pictures and read their speech bubbles aloud. Ask the
pupils to point to the speech bubbles as I read them. Ask the pupils a prediction
question at the end of picture 3, What day is today? (It‟s Great- grandpa‟s
birthday.)
2. Play the tape for the pupils and ask them to listen. Play the cassette again and ask
them to say the sentences after the cassette.
3. Ask the pupils to role-play the story in groups of four and to read the characters‟
speech bubbles.
D. Read the story again. Write the answers.
Ask the pupils to read the story again. Show them where to write their answers.
Check the answers with the pupils.

E. Say the sound and the words.
1. Play the Pupil‟s Book Cassette and ask the pupils to listen to the sound and the
words.
2. Say the words slowly and clearly. Check that the pupils are saying the sound
correctly.
3. Point to the pictures and check that the pupils can say the words.
4. Play the cassette again. Ask the pupils to listen to the poem and then circle the
same letters with the same sound. Get the pupils to repeat the poem.
F. Make a birthday train.
1. Ask the pupils to find friends with a birthday in the same month with them and get
into groups.
2. Within their groups, the pupils find out the birthdays of their group members in
order to get into order of dates.
3. Ask each pupil to cut out the train car on page 77 and write the date of their
birthday on the carriage.
4. Tell the pupils to line up in order of their birthdays and to present their train by
saying who is the first, the second, the third and so on.
G. Sing the song.
Play the cassette for the pupils to listen to the song and then encourage them to



join in with the words.
H. Think about it!
Ask the pupils how many birthdays Xiaoming has had (three). Ask them to
divide his age (twelve) by the number of birthdays (three). Which date only happens
once every four years? (February 29

Day, Children‟s Day, Teacher‟s Day and Christmas Day on the board.
2. Take one example of a holiday, e.g. Children‟s day. Ask the pupils What do we
do on Children‟s Day? Suggest and mime making a card, singing a song, writing
a poem or drawing a picture.
3. Show Transparency. Play the Pupil‟s Book Cassette and point to the speech
bubbles. Ask the pupils to repeat after the cassette.

1. Show Transparency. Point to the photo album Tim is holding and ask the pupils
to tell me the names of the holidays shown in each picture. Read the conversation
