Chopin’s The Story of an Hour is a work of
women’s revolt against marriage repression in
a patriarchal society.
Through an analysis of
the story’s narrative stance, one can perceive the
narrator’s masculine prejudice against
femininity. A disclosure of the
underlying
reason of the heroine’s death reveals narrator’s
conspiracy
with the patriarchal society in
eliminating women’s existence from the
text.
Chopin’s use of an unreliable narrator to tell the
story is a narrative
strategy and a critique
