born in America on October 17, 1956. She was the
youngest
of three children in the family. Mae
Jemison always tried her best. She studied
hard and became a doctor. Then she joined the
Peace Corps and worked in Africa because she
enjoyed helping others.
Then she wanted to
be an astronaut.
Because she had some training
as a doctor and a
scientist, she was chosen
from a group of about
2,000 people. Mae
Jemison flew into orbit on the spaceship on
September 12,
1992. She was the first African
American woman astronaut.
