My English teacher in the BBC asked me a
question yesterday. She asked me why are
Chinese students very keen to have an English
name?
When she was teaching at a university,
she taught students from all over the world.
Her students from Africa have African names,
students from India have Indian names
and
students from other European countries have names
related to their own
countries. However, most
of her Chinese students have English names. Some
Chinese
students even have very strange and
funny English names. Sometimes she found it
difficult to relate Chinese students' English
names and their registered Chinese names.
She
asked me why Chinese students don't like their
Chinese names.
It's
difficult to answer her question. I told her maybe
that's because Chinese students
thought their
Chinese names might be difficult for British
people to pronounce, and
therefore they
have chosen an English name.
My teacher didn't understand my explanation.
In Britain, many British people have
long and
difficult names, let alone people from some other
countries like the Middle
East or Africa.
People in Britain are usually willing to try to
pronounce your name
correctly. Worrying about
people having difficulty trying to pronounce your
name
shouldn't be a reason to change your
name.
I found another reason. It's
probably because Chinese students want to melt
into the
local culture as soon as possible. My
teacher still couldn't understand. She believes
that a person's name is also their identity.
It's confusing to have a name not relating to
your culture and nationality.
This was a really interesting discussion. When
I was in China, I also had an English
name.
Many of my friends have English names too. It's
normal to have an English
name.
Since being in London,
I have found it is totally unnecessary for me to
have an
English name. First of all, it's
confusing to other people as they don't identify
your
English name with your culture and it can
be difficult for others to relate your English
name to your real Chinese name. And most
importantly, I think my Chinese name,
Wang
Fei, sounds very good. Many of my friends in
London also like my Chinese
name.
Once, I interviewed a local British person on
the telephone. When I told him my
Chinese
name, he asked whether I was from China. I said
yes and asked him how he
found out this. He
answered that he guessed from my name. I felt very
good about
this. My name, my
appearance, my culture and my way of thinking are
all Chinese,
they are consistent.
So, from my point of
view, it's totally unnecessary for a Chinese
people to have an
English name.
What do you
think of this? I hope we can discuss about this
topic.)
