Every day,
hundreds of thousands of us visit coffee shops.
While we drink our coffee, we may
connect our
smart phone to the shop’s Wi-Fi network, and keep
in touch with friends via services
such as
Facebook.
As well as socializing, we may use
the time and free access to a wireless connection
to get on
top of our finances. Transferring
money from your account to others’ accounts is
nothing more than
a few taps on your screen.
But what coffee drinkers do not realize is
that lurking (潜伏)among their fellow coffee-lovers
are bank robbers.
Unbeknown to you, this
modern form of bank robber is silently collecting
all your private data.
The only sign of his
thievery is perhaps a little smile as your bank
log-in details appear on his screen.
You’ll
only realize when you later go to a cash machine
to withdraw(提取)some money, and
discover that
every penny in your account has been cleared out.
The more common method for thieves is to use
your smart phone’s Wi-Fi connection. They rely
on the fact that most of us are not careful
about the security of networks we connect to.
For example, when you are in a coffee shop,
your smart phone will present you with a list of
available Wi-Fi networks that you can use to
connect your phone to the Internet. Most of these
networks are run by legitimate(合法的) companies,
but sometimes they are actually created by a
thief sitting nearby with little more than a
laptop.
These networks are often given names,
such as “Free Public Wi-Fi”, which deceive smart
phone
users into logging in. On the surface,
everything seems normal, and you will be able to
connect just
as you are with a legitimate Wi-
Fi service.
However, because you have
connected to a network controlled by a thief, he
can monitor(监视)
everything you do, enabling
him to collect passwords and log-in details about
your bank account. In
fact, the process is so
simple that thieves can steal thousands of pounds
in just a few hours while
sitting in their
local Starbucks.
41. The underlined phrase “
get on top of “ can be replaced by ___________.
A. handle B. give
up C. cut off
D. set up
42. Where is the thief most
likely to be?
A. Near the victim
B. Outside the bank
C. At the street
D. I n a coffee shop
43. Which of the
following is TRUE according to the text?
A.
The free public Wi-Fi is illegal
B. The
process of the thief stealing your money is simple
C. The thief can’t collect your private
information.
D. There are only coffee-lovers
in the coffee shops.
44. What can we learn
from the passage?
A. Transferring money from
your account to others’ is a complex process.
B. It’s easy for you to tell bank robbers from
other coffee drinkers.
C. Online thieves could
steal money because people pay little attention to
the security of
networks.
D. All the
available networks in a coffee shop are illegal.
45. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. The convenience of free Wi-Fi networks.
B. The thief who withdraws our money.
C. Be
cautious about free Wi-Fi networks D. The
process of stealing money.

Before I even started school, people felt
that I was not going to amount to much. At the age
of
four, I started speech lessons because even
I could not speak well enough to be understood.
First grade was a struggle. I not only had
difficulty speaking, but I was expected to learn
to read
and I just couldn’t do it. My parents
grew more and more frustrated. They bought books
and offered
great rewards if I could read one
of them from start to finish to them. Well, with
my speech problems
and now my reading
problems, I did not like to do reading and so
refused to do it whenever possible.
Second
grade was not much better. It was in the second
grade that the teacher decided that I
needed
special education. I remember the days of taking
the physical exams. However, after all that,
they decided that I did not qualify for
special education.
It was in third grade that
a new school was built close to where I lived. I
remember going there
with my parents
and helping to get the school ready so that we
could transfer (转学). It was a happy
day that
we started school at Vandalia. However, things did
not get better as my parent expected.
It was
now time for fifth grade. Mrs. Wake field was my
teacher, and if ever there was a teacher that
deserved a gold star, it was her. She did not
make me feel upset. Instead, she helped me in so
many
ways and built my self-confidence so that
I actually did believe that I could do something
special.
And that is just what I did.
For
the past 22 years, I have been a fifth grade
teacher. Because of Mrs. Wake field’s influence
in my life, I am now encouraging students who
have had difficulties in their lives to believe
that they
can overcome and become someone. I
have won a large number of awards but I know that
all of
them belong to one fifth grade teacher
who believed in me and challenged me to be all
that I could
be.
I still have a class
picture of her with her fifth grade class hanging
on the wall of my office,
encouraging other
teachers to reach out to their students.

Answers to life can be found in everyday
events. Watching nature, watching people and
watching animals communicate with each other
provide some of the simplest ways to life’s
biggest
problems.
This became clearer to
me yesterday. It caused me to ask myself, “How do
I respond (反应) to
the storms in life?”
People usually run when it starts to rain. I
love to walk in it, stand on my front door and
feel it. I
grew up doing it and have never
really felt the fear many people do.
The
animal world senses changes in the weather far
earlier than humans. My dog, Ricky, begins
to
shake long before the storm is close enough to be
noticed. I was about to feed my three dogs
yesterday and as usual, I let them out in the
yard first. They didn’t move when thunder came
across
the skies. So I placed their food in
their bowls and called Ricky into the kitchen.
Ricky was just standing there in place next to
his bowl. The thunder became louder, which
forced him to stop eating his meal. Then I
watched Phil. He made his way across the kitchen
floor
and stood over Ricky’s bowl. He ate all
the remaining food. Generally, if Ricky was
standing there,
he wouldn’t dare (敢) come
close. But today, he took advantage (优势) of the
storm and got what he
wanted. His hope
for the prize outweighed (胜过) his dread of the
storm.
That’s when it hit me. As men, we face
all kinds of storms. They come in unannounced.
Sometimes we stay in a corner or under the
blankets, hoping it will all pass. However, if you
dare put
your head out, you’ll discover
there’re people doing what they must to get what
they must have out
of life. Isn’t it time you
decided to take advantage of the storm?
51.
According to the writer, answers to life
___________.
A. are difficult to find
B. lie around us
C. are simple to understand
D. make people become fearless
52. From the
passage we can learn that the writer ___________.
A. enjoys the rain
B. fears thunder
C. hates the storm
D. cares little about the weather
53. The
underlined word “dread” in Para. 5 most probably
means “___________”
A. hope B.
love C. tiredness D. fear
54. According to the passage, what hit the
writer most?
A. Phil wasn’t afraid of the
storm. B. Ricky stopped eating food.
C. Phil ate the rest of Ricky’s food.
D. Ricky sensed the storm earlier than he.
55.
What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Find out Answers to Life
B. Take Advantage of the Storm
C. Stop Storms
in our Daily Life D. Pay Attention
to Everyday Events

Music is an international language.
The songs that are sung or played by instruments
are
beautiful to all people everywhere.
Popular music in America is what every
student likes. Students carry small radios with
earphones and listen to music before class,
after class, and at lunch. Students with cars buy
large
speakers and play the music loudly as
they drive on the streets.
Adult drivers
listen to music on the car radio as they drive to
work. They also listen to the news
about
sports, the weather, politics, and activities of
the American people. Most of the radio broadcast
is music.
Pop or popular music singers
make much money. They make a CD or tape which
radio stations
use in every state. Once the
popular singer is heard throughout the country,
young people buy his or
her tapes. Some of the
money from these tapes comes to the singer.
Wherever the singer goes, all the
young people
want to meet him or her. Now the singer has become
a national star.
There are other kinds of
music that are important to Americans. One is
called folk music. It tells
stories about the
common life of Americans. Another is called
western or country music. This was
started by
cowboys who would sing at night to the cows they
were watching. Today, any music about
country
life and the love between a country boy and his
girl is called western or country music.
The
very formal and serious music for the concert
halls is called classical music. Music for
instruments is called orchestra music (管弦乐),
such as the symphonies (交响乐) of Beethoven.
There is opera (歌剧) for singers. There is
ballet (芭蕾舞剧) for dancers like the story of Liang
Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai in China.
