A 4,700gt chemical
tanker collided with the stern of a 1009gt cargo
vessel in the south-west
lane of the Dover
Traffic Separation Scheme in daylight and good
visibility. The officer of
the watch on the
chemical tanker had not seen the cargo vessel he
was overtaking, despite it
being right ahead
or nearly right ahead for up to an hour before the
collision. The chief
officer , who was the OOW
on the cargo vessel, had seen the chemical tanker
approaching,
but in the period immediately
before the collision he had been distracted by an
incoming
telephone call, which he took in a
position where he could not look out astern. In
the event,
neither vessel took any action
before the collision. It was, quite clearly, the
first responsibility
of the chemical tanker to
keep out of the way, but the chief officer on the
cargo vessel should
have done more to alert
the tanker to the danger. A designated lookout on
either vessel would
have helped prevent the
accident.
85. Before the collision happened,

关联题4:
Bulk
carrier general arrangement and size range are
similar to that of tankers. Single-purpose
bulk carriers are generally designed as ore
carriers built to carry heavy cargos stowing at 25
cubic feet per long ten or less, or dry bulk
carriers, for grain and similar cargoes stowing at
45
to 50 cubic feet per ton. Like tankers, the
general arrangement of cargo spaces is dictated by
the facts that the cargo is in the form of
homogeneous particles of more or less uniform
size,
and can be transferred by blowers,
conveyors, or grab buckets. Cargo spaces are
divided into
holds to meet structural and
subdivision requirements, to restrain cargo
movements and
resulting upsetting moments to
permit the carrying of different cargoes
simultaneously, and to
provide for ballasting.
Relatively small volumes of dense ores and similar
cargoes will settle a ship to her summer load
line. Holds on ore carriers are therefore quite
small, bounded by broad wing tanks and deep
double bottoms. The double bottom and
longitudinal bulkheads are of heavy
construction to carry the heavy ore load. The
narrow hold
breadth limits transverse weight
shifts and the depth of the double bottom is
sufficient to keep
the center of gravity of
the ore high enough to prevent stiff rolling in a
seaway. Large volume
wing tanks are used for
ballast.
89. The cargo space of bulk carrier
are divided into some holds for the following
reasons
except ____.
A. meet structural
and subdivision requirements B. restrain cargo
movements
C . increase upsetting moments
D. permit carrying different cargos
simultaneously
90. The cargo in the form
of homogeneous particles is not suitable being
transferred by____ .
A. derrick B. blowers
C. conveyor D. grab bucket
91. The general
arrangement and size range of bulk carrier are
similar to ( ).
A. general cargo ship
B. oil tanker
C. container ship
D. gas carrier
92. ( ) is not the
characteristics ore carriers.
A. narrow
hold breadth
B. large volume wing tanks are
used for ballast
C. heavy
construction in double bottom and longitudinal
bulkheads
D. tiny depth of double bottom

The magnetic compass
is one of the oldest items of navigational
equipment. It gets its source
of power from
the earth’s magnetic field. Despite the rising
importance and great convenience
of the
gyrocompass, the magnetic compass still retains
its importance because of its simplicity
and
reliability. The magnetic compass will remain
operative even when a ship is subjected to
the
following: electrical power failure, fire,
collision, grounding or other hazards.
Magnetic compasses are composed of a compass
bowl and a binnacle stand. The bowl is a
bowl-
shaped container of nonmagnetic material (brass)
which serves to contain the magnetic
element,
a reference mark, and the fluid. It is supported
in the gimbals within the binnacle.
The
compass card is an aluminum disc, graduated in
degrees from 00 to 3600. It also shows
cardinal and intercardinal points. It can work
satisfactorily against an inclination of within
10’.
The magnetic needle (made of MK magnetic
steel) sticks positively to the float, which is an
aluminum, air-filled chamber in the center of
the compass card, and its magnetism never
diminishes due to ageing.

compasses can still be used when electrical power
failure
C. The magnetic compasses are more
accurate than gyrocompasses
D. After
collision or grounding, the magnetic compass is
still operational

Merchant ships are designed to carry cargo.
Some are also designed to carry passengers. They
can operate as liners. These are employed on
regular routes on a fixed timetable. A list of
their arrival and departure dates is published
in advance and they sail whether full or not.
Liners can be classed as either deep-sea
liners or short-sea liners. The former carry
mainly
containerized cargo across the oceans
of the word, the later carry containerized or
conventional cargo on shorter routes. Ferries
are also classed as liners, These offer a daily or
weekly service for passengers and vehicles
across channels and narrow seas. A few ships are
still employed as passenger liners. They not
only carry passengers but also some cargo on
routes from Europe to North America and to the
Far East. Nowadays the passenger trade is
very
small and passenger liners usually operate as
cruise ships for part of the year.

safe
ocean navigation covering passage
planning, harbours and nautical hazard anchorages,
coastal
and offshore navigation. To ensure
safe navigation. It is recommended that mariners
always
use the largest scale chart available.
In particularly busy seaways, the Admiralty SNC
series is
supplemented by Mariners Routing
Guides which advise on route planning and all
necessary
regulations appropriate to the area
