本集故事梗概如下：纽约全城停电，Chandler碰巧被困在一间24小时ATM自助服务厅里，<
br>名模儿Jill碰巧也被困当中。Chandler有心无胆，空欢喜一场。其余五人呆在Monica和
Rachel
家里侃山。丑陋裸男点了很多蜡烛。Ross在Joey的怂恿下决心向Rachel表白
，却突然遭到
一只猫的攻击，Rachel和Phoebe替猫找寻主人，遇到“怪人”海先生（他将在
今后的剧集中
出现）。他声称他就是猫的主人，但显然他在撒谎。原来猫的主人叫Paolo，是这栋楼
里居住
的意大利大块头男人，他不大会讲英语。Rachel和Paolo一见钟情，打得火热，可怜的
Ross
不得不还没恋爱就宣布失恋了。

“black out”停电、熄灯、
停止和中断的意思，这一集一开始，整个纽约市都断电了，还真是
酷耶。关于black还有一
些词组需要掌握，black and
white:白纸黑字，类似的还有混淆是非（callmake black white）;bule
and white青一块紫一块；black booklist 黑名单等等。

还有人往往介绍自己直博了，个人认为如下说法比较合适:be nominated to
be a phd candidate
directly,在有些学校介绍硕博连读的网页上，还有如下表述direct-
promotion program for PHD
diploma..还常常有ABD来代表在
读的博士生或者准博士。值得注意的是国外大学一般很少
有授予硕士学位，不像国内。A pool

warning.意思是他以动不动就发火而闻名。Way overrated,overrate对
什么估计高了，前面加上一个way，就是估计的过高了的意思，way这里作副词，表示远远
地、大大
地。记得在《Sleepless in Seattle》里面，出现了一个way
stupid，意思是太蠢了，
蠢的够可以。

time 意思是从容进行，当Joey好心好意劝他抓紧时间行动时候，他一开始是否认，接
着就给自
己借口说自己是在打基础（lay the
groundwork）,说自己是每天都在越来越接近
Rachel, Joey看得如此明白，不等
他话说完，就说他不是变得越来越接近Rachel，而是越来
越像个神父（Priesthood），
stuck是stick的过去式，同主题曲中的stuck in the second gear意
思相同，停留在、卡在的意思，Joey说如果你不赶快行动，你们就将永远停留在朋友的区
间了。

you=you bet,当然、真的、的确的意思。口语中常
用。

海姆利克氏操作法，Heimlich手法具体操作方法如下：当患者突然发生呼吸道异物导致窒息<

力猛的向上提，借助胃泡内及肺内残留气体被挤出时产生的推力和患者上半部躯体倒

重力，将气管内或卡在会厌部位的异物推出，从而挽救患者的生命。
Heimlich情急之中无意间发
明此法，第一位获救者是他的妻子，目前此法在美国已家喻户晓，
常组织有数万人参加的演练。这里Ji
ll就用这种方法救了Chandler一命。

的意思。而definite是明确的、一定的意思
。看来是乐极生悲吧，这时候来电了，他发现Paolo
和Rachel已经拥抱在一起接吻了，捂着自
己的肚子再也笑不出来了。Make
out的意思比较
多，比如填写、开出；声称、伪装；论证、证明等，这里用来表示亲热的关系。
