The
Application of Domestication and Foreignization
Strategies in the C-E
Translation of The
Legend of the White Snake
Abstract: With
China‘s rising impact as a great economic power,
Chinese culture
starts to exert stronger
influence in the cross-cultural communications
between China
and other foreign countries. As
a result, the C-E translations of Chinese
classical
literature works, legends and
folktales become a heated topic in scholarly
discussion.
Through the comparison of two
English versions of The Legend of the White Snake,
this thesis analyzes how domestication and
foreignization strategies have applied
flexibly in the C-E translation. This study
intends to provide some suggestions for
other
C-E translations which aim at conveying Chinese
culture to foreign readers.

1. Introduction
In the trend of the
globalization of economy, politics, cultures and
technologies,
English has brought the whole
world home to all walks of life. China, without
exception, is undergoing the opening-up and
reform in order to adapt to the
development of
modern society. Recent years, the whole world has
witnessed China‘s
rising international status
and development of economy. As a result, a growing
number of foreigners come to China to travel
around, learn Mandarin or study at
universities. As we can see, culture plays an
outstanding role in revealing China‘s
international image in our national power as
soft power.
The Legend of the White Snake is
one of the Four Famous Folktales in China. It
has a popular reputation and is widely
known by Chinese people. Its evolvement and
adaptations, along with changes of people‘s
aesthetics, religious beliefs and social
values, can be called ―the epitomes of
historical change‖.(Duan Huanqing, 2011: 7)
Naturally, the C-E translation of The Legend
of the White Snake has always been a
heated
topic among the scholars.
Despite the growing
academic interest in cultural translation, there
exist many
problems in the translation
practices, especially the gap between original
culture and
understanding of foreign readers.
The causes of these problems can be summarized
into three types. The first one rests with
translators who do not really know much
cultural background. The second one has much
to do with the translators‘ reliance on
machine translation. The most important reason
is that translators have not applied
proper
strategy and approaches to their translations. As
a result, these mistranslations
bring about
foreign readers‘ misunderstanding about Chinese
culture. The above
analysis suggests that the
major task of cultural translation is to bridge
the gaps
between the cultures of source
language and target language.
In history, some
scholars and translators, such as Yan Fu, Lu Xun,
and Fu
Lei, have made great contributions to
the development of
translation r, Yan Fu‘s
―faithfulness, expressiveness‖, Lu Xun‘s
―rather be faithful and elegant‖ and Fu Lei‘s
―the notion of ‗to be alike in spirit‘‖ can
not deal with all of the problems in cultural
translation.
In the 20th Century, the Germany
philosopher Schleiermacher stated in his thesis
that there are two ways for translating, one
is leading readers to authors, another is
authors to readers, which was the beginning of
domestication and foreignization.
Then in the
1995, an American theorist of translation called
Lawrence Venuti named
the first translation
strategy as domestication and the second
foreignization. And that
are the two
strategies still in use.
Drawing on the
existing research of scholars in the field, this
thesis focuses on
the translations of details
in The Legend of the White Snake and translation
strategies
of domestication and
foreignization, contributing some guidance and
suggestions on
proper ways to translate
literatures with my meager strength.
