1. At
last firemen have put out a big forest fire in
California.
消防队员们终于扑灭了加利福尼亚的一场森林大火。
(1)at last(终于,到底)表示经过一番努力之后。
(2)put
out可以表示“扑灭”、“熄灭”、“关掉”等含义:
Please put the
light fire out.
请把灯关掉/把火灭掉。
(3)forest虽然是名词,但在句中起形容词的作用,修饰fire。

Since then, they have been trying to find out how
the fire began.
从那时起,他们一直试图找出起火的原因。
find out 表示
“查明、查出”,通常意味着经过一番努力后才能发现,如经过询问、研究、
搜寻、调查等;
They are trying to find out whether there
is something wrong with the machine.
他们正在努力查明这台机器是否有毛病。
find out
后面可以跟上带疑问词引导的从句,如:Find out where he is going.
查一下
他要去哪儿。
3. Forest fires are often
caused by broken glass or by cigarette ends which
people carelessly throw away.
森林火灾时常由破碎的玻璃或人们随手扔掉的香烟头引起。

cause & reason
a. cause
指直接导致行为或事件发生的原因,即 “起因”;
reason指解释某事为什么发生的理由或借
口,这种理由可能不是真正的原因;该词多用于
人的行为。
The cause
of the fire was carelessness.
That’s the
reason why he left.
比较:The cause
of the accident was the fact that he was driving
too fast.
车祸的原因是他当时开得太快了。
The
reason he was driving too fast was that he was
late for work.
他开得快的原因是他上班要迟到了。
b.
cause 表示 “使发生、导致、引起”,是及物动词;reason表示
“评理、劝说”,是不
及物动词,常与with, into, out of 连用:
He caused me to drop my suitcase. 他弄得我把衣箱扔了。
I tried to reason with her but she locked
herself in the bathroom.
4. Yesterday
the firemen examined the ground carefully, but
were not able to
find any broken glass.
昨天,消防队员仔细查看了地面,但未能发现碎玻璃。
examine v.
检查,名词形式是examination, 通常简写成exam, 表示考试。

They were also quite sure that a cigarette end did
not start the fire.
他们还十分肯定火灾也不是由烟头引起的。
start作及物动词时可以表示“使……发生”、“引起”。
Start &
Begin
a. 两者都表示 “开始”时,这两个动词可以互换:
It has
started begun to rain.
The film starts
begins at seven.
b. 在表示 “动身、起程” 和
“开动、起动”时,只能用start, 而不能用begin:
They started
out for London.
The car won’t start.
to
start a machine an engine
6. This
morning, however, a fireman accidentally
discovered the cause.
然而今天上午,一个消防队员偶然发现了起火的原因。
Accidentally 表示事情出乎意料地发生,即 “意外地、偶然地”
discover含有偶然发现(某个已经存在的东西)的意思,在discover前面加上acciden
tally
更加强了“偶然性”和“意外性”。

the remains of a snake which was wound round the
electric wires
of a 16,.000-volt power line.
他发现了缠绕在16,000伏高压线上的一条死蛇。
(1) the
remains表示“尸体”、“残骸”,必须用复数形式:
The villagers
were surprised to see the remains of an aeroplane
near the lake.
村民们惊讶地发现湖边有一架飞机的残骸。
(2)wo
und为wind的过去分词。wind在这里不表示“蜿蜒”,而表示“卷在……上”、“缠
绕”,常
与around/round连用:
Did you wind this piece of
wire round the tree?
是你把这根铁丝缠在树上的吗?
(3)wire指具体的电线、铁丝等,power line 是指电力线
8. In
this way, he was able to solve the mystery. The
explanation was simple but
very unusual.
就这样,他解开了起火之谜。解释很简单,却异乎寻常。

had snatched up the snake from the ground and then
dropped it on to
the wires.

drop & fall
a. drop 表示
“使落下、使掉落”,是及物动词, 带宾语:
The one with the money
got such a fright that he dropped the bag.
b. fall 表示 “掉下、跌倒”,是不及物动词,不能带宾语。
He fell
down the stairs and broke his leg.

The snake then wound itself round the wires. When
it did so, it sent sparks
down to the ground
and these immediately started a fire.
于是蛇就缠住了几根电线。当它这样做时,把火花送到了地面,这些火花立刻引起了一场大
