Just before Christmas, my daughter Katie and
I went over to my dad’s place to decorate.
While we worked on the tree, grand babies
Decie and Johnny entertained their great-

Papa Cox. Their laughter and
occasional arguments must have reminded Papa of
the past days

When the tree was beautifully
dressed and glowing, we said goodbye to my dad

The Christmas I turned 16,while

Guiltily, I bent to pick up
the broken pieces and was surprised to find a tiny
sheet of paper among the
pieces. Unfolding it,
I recognized my father’s penciled writing» which
read,“I love you”. Lifting
my eyes, I saw my
mothers fond expression.
“Your daddy wrote
that and stuck it in that blue ball during our
first Christmas together, just
before you were

end up not being satisfied
wilh what they are given. Our research suggests
that a key reason that
gift-givers give
unsatisfactory gifts is that they are keen to see
bright smiles or squeals(尖叫)of
delight with
their gifts and that such reactions are frequently
not paired with gifts that are deeply
valued.
The study found almost 40 percent
of men would choose a dozen roses over a bonsai
tree la
buy their partner for Valentine's Day.
But just 27.8 percent of women loved the bouquet
rather
than the house plant. Men chose the
present that they thought would get the best
reaction, but that
was not as important lo the
people receiving it.
When the researchers
asked 80 people for their favorite gifts, books
and money came out
among the top for
satisfaction, despite causing little in the way of
smiles or squeals. Further
analysis of 198
people and 600 Christmas gifts found tools like a

Salt
consumption exceeds national and World Health
Organization (WHO) guidelines in
most
countries, but only the highest-sodium(钠)diets,
such as in China, are linked to clear health
risks,” researchers said.
Only individuals
with a daily salt intake of at least 12.5 grams
were associated with increased
blood pressure
and a greater risk of stroke. WHO ' recommends the
amount of salt consumption
shouldn’t be over
five grams per day,but this target is not known to
have been achieved at a
national : level
anywhere in the world.
“ We should be far more
concerned about : targeting communities and
countries with high
average sodium
intake—above five grams (equal to ! 12.5 grams of
salt), such as China—and
bringing 丨 them down
to the moderate range of 7. 5 to 12. 5 grams of
salt,” said lead author Andre
Meate, a
professor in the Population Health Research
Institute at McMaster University in Canada.
Four-fifths of the groups examined in China
had average daily salt intake of 12. 5 grams,
whereas in other countries 84 percent between
7. 5 and 12. 5 grams. “Our study adds to growing
evidence that, at moderate intake, sodium may
have a beneficial role in cardiovascular
(心血管
的)health, but a potentially more harmful
role when intake is very high or very low,” he
said in a
statement.
The human body needs
essential nutrients such as sodium and many
vitamins,but the ideal
amount remains to be
debated. Most controversial was the suggestion
that low sodium intake may,
in factf,provoke
heart disease. However,Tgm Sanders, professor at
King’s College London
thinks sodium is an
essential nutrient but the requirement is very !ow
at about 0. 5 grams (1. 25
grams of salt) per
day. He advises ageing populations should restrict
the addition of salt to food.
32 According to

guidelines.

Sleep is vital to your physical and mental
health. However, how can you tell whether you’re
truly sleeping well? It can be hard to measure
your sleep patterns against those of the people
around
you. If you have trouble in sleeping
well, you can adopt some habits that encourage
better sleep.
to a sleep schedule.
Set
aside no more than eight hours for sleep. The
recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult
is at least seven hours. Most people don’t
need more than eight hours in bed to achieve this
goal.
Go to bed and get up at the same time
every day. Try to limit the difteresncfe in your
sleep
schedule on weeknights and weekends to
no more than one hour.
attention to what you
eat and drink.
Don’t go to bed hungry or too
full. In particular, avoid heavy or large meals
within a couple of
hours of bedtime. Your
discomfort might keep you up. Nicotine, caffeine
and alcohol deserve
caution, too. The
stimulating effects of nicotine and caffeine take
hours to disappear and can
influence quality
sleep. And even though alcohol might make you feel
sleepy, it can disturb sleep
later in the
night.
3.__Create a restful environment.
Create a room that’s ideal for sleeping.
Often, this means cool, dark and quiet. Exposure to
light might make it more challenging to fall
asleep. Avoid prolonged use of light-emitting
screens
just before bedtime. Doing calming
activities before bedtime, such as taking a bath
or using
relaxation techniques, might promote
better sleep.
4. Limit daytime naps.
Long
daytime naps can interfere with nighttime sleep.
If you choose to nap, limit yourself to up to
30 minutes and avoid doing so late in the day.
If you work nights, however, you might need to
nap late in the day before work to help make up
your
sleep debt.

Ten years ago I was diagnosed with anorexia

“Why
me?” It wasn’t until I was well enough to look
back that I realized how much of my Hfe was
shaped by my anorexia. But not in a bad way.
Being grateful for our past experiences and
our struggles can be a hard thing to
sometines wish events in our past could be
erased so we could start without these
events,we couldn't grow and learn.
The day
I realized this I was sitting in a small church
that I had just started attending with my
boyfriend at the time. The preacher’s (牧师)wife
came up to me and asked me how school
was. I
said I didn’t like it that much. She responded,
“Well,if you hadn’t gone there,you wouldn't
have met then pointed at my boyfriend
who
later became my husband.
This really opened my
eyes, and after I left I started seeing everything
in my life through this
perspective. If I
hadn’t gone to that school and worked at that job
I disliked,I would have never met
my future I
hadn’t battled anorexia,I wouldn’t have found my
true self. At first I didn’t
see how having
anorexia could have been a blessing But when I
looked at it as an experience for me,
I
started to see that I had a lot to be thankful
for.
Challenge yourself to look for the light
rather than the darkness. I promise, you can find
it.
And if not you
can create it.

Choice of seating in the lecture
hall can affect a college student’s performance» a
study
suggests.
Lectures are a main part
of higher education ,and understanding how
students interact and
learn within the lecture
theatre environment is central to successful
learning. Researchers from
Sheffield Hallam
University in the UK examined students’ reasons
for choosing particular
seats in a lecture
hall, and investigated how seating positions are
related to students’ performance.
“
Interaction is a key part of learning and knowing
who the students are interacting with can
be a
great benefit when designing activities,” said
David P Smith of Sheffield Hallam University.
Many students preferred being able to sit with
their friends, while others were more
concerned with either attracting or avoiding
the lecturer’s attention. Some students chose
seats that
allowed them to see and hear
clearly. But easily picked seats that made them
feel less depressed,they
said.
Friendship
groups who sat together tended to achieve similar
grades, and students who sat alone at
the edges
were likely to do average.
Lecturers may be
able to use these offer assistance to anxious
students, support the learning of
all students
by encouraging interactions between the different
groups.
