Face concerns 面子问题

In China, face saving and face giving are crucial values. As one can see, Chinese
always live in the eyes of the others and pay much attention on their reputation.
person has a face as every tree has a bark
人要脸,树要皮
as the Chinese saying
goes. As one has put that to lose one's credit is just like one's eyes, nose,
and mouthSocial judgment as a personal asset and as a family asset is considered
as vital. The worst thing that can happen to Chinese is to lose face, to feel
humiliated. For Chinese, not showing ignorance is more important than telling the
truth. Maintaining face is always prior over other issues.

(举例说明In this regard, the 19th century with events like the Nanjing and the
Tianjin treaties and the sack of the Summer palace, explain a lot of what happened
during the 19th century in terms of humiliation, national bitterness and restoration
of reputation. The fact that one of the current best sellers in China is titled

Trust

In the tough, reckless, merciless global Chinese society, there is no room for trust.
Suspicious is normal in daily life. Trust is required in doing business, building
and maintaining a good relationship.

Thus, any business starts with establishing
a relationship. This will hopefully thwart dirty tricks and hidden agendas of all
sorts. One must develop a spheremade of friends, relatives with whom
business can be carried out minimal risk. This explains the eagerness of the Chinese
to develop personal networks or rely on the family, meeting thus a basic Confucian
value.
While in Chinese culture, cleverness and shrewdness are viewed as superior to
strength and law. Chinese people are used to getting to back door rather than
following the rules or laws.
Centrality
The Chinese operate from concentric同心的 circles: China, center of the world;
Beijing, center of China (with the whole country at Beijing time); Zhong Nan Hai
(the new forbidden city where political power stays) is the heart of Beijing. The
geographical and political structures completely overlap.
Centrality applies as well to cultural issues. Everything is assessed from a
sino-centric point of view. The reference is China, Chinese views, Chinese needs,
Chinese values, Chinese tastes, and Chinese food. While negotiating with Chinese
leaders, Kissinger had to permanently deal with what he conceptualized as the
Kingdom Syndrome

identified on the process of

Individualism, the way it is understood in the West, is not a newly established main
value but there is a clear trend towards personal responsibility.
(三方面举例Privatization of State-owned Enterprises, development of joint ventures
and Wholly Foreign-owned Enterprises introduce new methods of management based on
individual performance. The multiplication of small businesses relying on a very
small number of people brings personal responsibility to the foreground. The current
trend is increased accountability as an individual rather than to be a number of
a group which bears as a whole the responsibility.企业方面

A sharp analyst of Chinese family values is also challenged in many aspects. In places
such as Shanghai or Beijing, it is not unusual that the son or daughter who has studied
abroad earns a salary twenty times higher than what the father gets, questioning
the traditional family hierarchy.家庭观念方面

Another significant indicator of the phenomenon is the surprising rise of the number
of divorces. These new trends indicate that people take more and more their personal
interest and their individual needs into consideration and make them priorities.
个人观念)

Money-oriented behavior拜金行为
Along with individuation, showing external signs of wealth has become a social basic
requirement. It can be analyzed as a search for status, for social recognition, an
ambivalent desire of identification to the new trend and a quest for differentiating
oneself socially, which comes up with a new identity issue in changing China, since
Chinese believe that more money means better life.

On the other hand, people are becoming definitively richer than ever before, but
there are some drawbacks:
Seeking quick and easy money leads to widespread corruption. Civil servants use their
position to extort bribes and the Party as well as the government can heavily punish
corrupted members when discovered. It also leads to gambling, smuggling, cheating
and counterfeiting, another serious problem that still has to be solved in spite
of recent efforts made by the central government.

The concept of time
Traditionally, time was understood as an unlimited resource fully available like
the air that people breathe. Now, time becomes money and in business transactions
costs are increasingly taken into account. It does not take any longer three to four
years to sign a joint venture contract.

Traditionally companies and people were long term oriented. Time was not understood
as a sum of hours, minutes and seconds but as the general course of events and seasons.
A radical shift in perspectives is occurring and short-term views now tend to
prevail.
