Bertha Mason

Bertha Mason is a complex presence but never a mad woman. Bertha Mason is a formerly
beautiful and wealthy Creole woman who has become insane, violent, and bestial after all the
oppression. She ought to be an object of pity for she has been removed from her home and shut off
from all society. She lives in a single room with a drunken keeper, confined by a man who hates
her. The oppressed Bertha, whose imprisonment in Thornfield's attic arguably represented the
oppression of a racial inferior, a half-Jamaican Creole. She is a normal woman who is intelligent
and has the feeling of hatred and jealousy (of Jane over Rochester), and is also able to thwart plans
(burning Jane's wedding dress to prevent the wedding). She just dose those wild behavior to
hide her oppressed and fragile inner world.

Rochester is a character from the novel Jane Eyre written by Charlotte. Rochester, as Jane’s
employer and the master of Thornfield, is a wealthy, passionate man . Rochester seems to be a
Gothic hero. He is haunted by his shameful past. He is rash(轻率的） when he is young. His
problems of Bertha Mason and Varens are partly the result of his recklessness(鲁莽）. On the other
hand, he is a sympathetic figure. First, he doesn’t abandon Varens though he doesn’t believe she is

accusation of the materialistic society.

prejudice, which judges her to be both a rebel and a compromiser. Thus no matter how deep
affection she has for Heathcliff, she still chooses to marry the wealthy Edgar Linton. Catherine’s
betrayal to Heathcliff is mostly forced by the materialistic society she lives in. On the other hand,
it is partly because of her vanity and selfishness.

surrender even before a rich and high class person. If anybody wants to spoil her rights, she will

foundation of an ideal marriage. To her, love was saint and pure.

and valued, just behave yourself. He is so calm to deal with the problem that daughter runs away
with a man. Although he doesn’t like Mr. Darcy, he still permits the marriage. Unlike his wife, he
will never force Elizabeth to do anything. He just tells her the reality, then let herself to make
choice.

and talented. Influenced by Phillotson, Jude longs for studying in Christerminster and
bing a learned man. Thus he studies on his own industriously. He is firm about his
dream. Having no chance to study in Christerminster, he still wants to be a clergy. As
for love, ha also is firm and lofty, which is beyond carnal desire. But at the same time,
he is weak for he falls into temptation of Arabella and cannot stop Sue to leave him.
Both in ideal and love, he is unreality in that age,which results in his death. In a word,
he is a tragic hero.

Anger Clare

considerable extent before marriage, but he is very selfish in deserting Tess after Tess’s confession.
He thinks only of his own dilemma, but can’t bear to live with Tess when the man who seduced
her is still alive. Although Angel and Tess love each other, Angel’s love is not as pure as Tess’s, his

The most obvious characteristic of Alec is his selfish and inconsiderateness of others. He
takes an attitude that woman is primary a sexual object, so he makes full use of his money to get
close to Tess. He is determined to get what he wants and he doesn’t care for Tess’s feelings.
What’s more, Alec is arrogant, rude and bad-tempered. Though he eventually falls in love with
Tess truly what he does all serves his purpose: to let Tess be his mistress again. He doesn’t realize
Tess’s fidelity to her husband, and he doesn’t understand it is impossible to win Tess’s love. So his
limited understanding of Tess is responsible for Tess’s tragedy and he pays for it with his own life.
