activities.
key n. a set of answers to exercises or problems.
manual n. a book that tell you how to do or operate sth, especially one
that comes with a machine, etc. when you buy it.
discretion un. the freedom or power to decide what should be down in a
particular situation: I’ll leave it up to you to use your discretion.
genuine a. real; exactly what it appeals to be; not artificial: Students
should experience genuine interest and enjoyment in what they read.
appropriate a. suitable, acceptable or correct for the particular
situation: Now that the problem has been identified, appropriate action can be taken.
compelling  a. that makes you pay attention to it because it is so
interesting and exciting: Her latest book makes compelling reading.
engage vn. to succeed in keeping sb’s attention and interest: The readings in the book


should engage students and teachers alike.
ease un. lack of difficulty: He passed the exam with ease.
versatility n. many different uses: The limited answer key at the
back of the text also makes for versatility: the teacher can assign some chapter for
self-teaching.
assign v. to sb sth they can use, or some work or responsibility.
integration n. the act or process of combining two or more things so
they can work together: His music is a integration of tradition and new technology.
supplementary (=supplemental) a. provided in addition to sth else in
order to improve or complete it: supplementary materials.
identical a. similar in every detail: An instructor’s edition is identical
to the student book except that it also provides hints for teachers.
hint n, 1. sth that you say or do in a indirect way to show sb what you are thinking; 2. a
small piece of practical information or advice.
item n. a single piece of news in a newspaper, on television, etc: an item of
newsa news item.
bank n. an amount of sth that is collected; a place where sth is stored ready
for use: a bank of knowledge.
syllabus n. a list of topics, books, etc. that students should study in a
particular subject at school or college (教学大纲)

icon n. a small symbol on a computer scream that represents a program.
revise vn. to change sth, especially a book or estimate, in order to correct
or improve it: a revised edition of textbook.
metaphor cn. & un. 暗喻;隐喻
set sth of to make sth more noticeable or attractive by being placed near it: Boxes,
rules, and screens set off patterns of organization, chapter reviews, and important
points.


cluttered a. covered with, or full of, a lot things or people in a way that is
untidy: The book is more visually friendly without becoming visually cluttered.
heroic a. showing extreme courage and admired by many people: The
passage celebrate the heroic passenger thwarted the terrorist plan to fly a hijacked
plane into a second Washington, D.C. government building.
thwart v. to prevent sb from doing what they want to do
hijack vn, to use violent or threat to take control of a vehicle, especially
