I have been in England three months
now. I hope you don't think I've forgotten
you. There have been so many places to see and
so many things to do that I've not had much
time for writing letters.
I shall
soon be starting my studies at King's College. So
far I've been learning about
England and
British ways of living. I won't tell you about
London. There are lots of books
you can read
and lots of pictures you can look at about this
famous city. I'm sure you'll be
more
interested to know what I think about life here.
I find some of the customs(风俗)
interesting. People here do not shake hands as
much
as we do in the mainland(大陆)of Europe.
During the first few weeks I was often surprised
because people did not put out their hands
when I met them. Men raise their hats to women
but not to each other.

A young father was visiting an old neighbor. They
were standing in the old man's
garden, and
talking about children. The young man said, “How
strict should parents be
with their children?”
The old man pointed to a
string(绳子)between a big strong tree and a thin
young
one. “Please untie(解开)that string,” he
said. The young man untied it, and the young
tree bent(弯)over to one side. “Now tie it
again, please,” said the old man, “but first
pull the string tight so that the young tree
is straight again.”
The young man did
so. Then the old man said, “There,it is the same
with
children. You must be strict with them,
but sometimes you must untie the string to know
how they are getting on. If they are not yet
able to stand alone, you must tie the string tight
again. But when you find that they are ready
to stand alone, you can take the string away.”

In 1950 an ordinary but imaginative(富于想象力)
electrical engineer named Christopher
Cockerell began an experiment that was soon to
change the world. He came up with an idea
to
make boats go faster, by using a vacuum
cleaner(真空吸尘器).
Using his wife's vacuum
cleaner he was able to reverse(使倒转) the motor so
that it
blew instead of sucking. The air that
blew out beneath(下面) acted as a cushion against
surfaces. Years later, his principle of
cushioned air made it possible for the first
hovercraft
(气垫船) to be successfully built and
tried out. A journey along the Amazon River proved
to the world that the hovercraft was both
wonderful and useful.
The invention that
began in the kitchen and the boatyard of an
ordinary home led to a
thousand other
inventions. Today hovercrafts carry passengers in
comfort over rough
channels and seas.

In order to know a foreign language
thoroughly(完全地),four things are
necessary.
First, we must understand the language when we
hear it spoken. Secondly, we
must be able to
speak it ourselves, with confidence(自信) and
without hesitation(犹
豫). Thirdly, we must do
much reading. Finally, we must be able to write
it. We must
be able to make sentences that are
correct in grammar.
There are no
shortcuts to success in language learning. A good
memory is a great help,
but it is not enough
only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It
is not much learning
by heart long lists(一览表)
of words and their meanings, studying the
dictionary and so
on. We must learn by using
the language.
If we are pleased with a few
rules we have memorized, we are not really
learning the
6 110
高一英语阅读训练100篇
language. We must “learn through use.”
Practice is important. We must practise speaking
and writing the language whenever we can.
21. The most important things to learn a
foreign language are _____.
A.
understanding and speaking
B.
listening, speaking, reading and writing
C. writing and understanding
D.
memorizing and listening
22. Someone hears and
writes English very well, but he speaks it very
badly. This is
because _____.
A.
he doesn't understand the language when he hears
it spoken
B. he doesn't have a good
memory
C. he always remembers lists of
words and their meanings
D. he often
hesitates(犹豫) to practise speaking it
23. One
can never learn a foreign language well by _____.
A. doing much practice B.
studying the dictionary
C. learning
through use D. using the language
24. Which is the most important in learning a
foreign language?
A. A good memory.
B. Speaking.
C. Practice.
D. Writing.
25. “Learn through use” means
______.
A. we use a language in order
to learn it
B. we learn a foreign
language in order to use it
C.we can learn a
language well while we are keeping using it
D. B and C.

What is language for? Some people seem to
think it's for practicing grammar rules and
learning lists of words—the longer the lists,
the better. That's wrong. Language is for the
exchange(交流) of ideas and information. It's
meaningless knowing all about a language if
you can't use it freely. Many students I have
met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they
7
110
高一英语阅读训练100篇
can't speak
correctly or fluently(流利地). They are afraid of
making mistakes. One
shouldn't be afraid of
making mistakes when speaking a foreign language.
Native speakers
make mistakes and break rules,
too. Bernard Saw once wrote, “Foreigners often
speak
English too correctly. ” But the
mistakes that native speakers make are different
from those
that Chinese students make. They're
English mistakes in the English language. And if
enough native speakers break a rule, it is no
longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes
right. People not only make history, they make
language. But a people can only make its
own
language. It can't make another people's language.
So Chinese students of English
should pay
attention to grammar, but they shouldn't
overdo(做过头) it. They should put
communication(交际) first.
1. Language is
used to _____.
A. express oneself
B. practise grammar rules
C. talk with
foreigners only D. learn lists of
words
2. Generally, when an American or an
Englishman speaks English, he _____.
A.
never makes mistakes B. often
makes mistakes
C. can't avoid making
mistakes D. always makes mistakes
3.
“Foreigners often speak English too correctly. ”
This sentence means that __.
A.
foreigners speak correct English
B.
foreigners speak incorrect English
C.
foreigners speak English according to the grammar
rules
D. foreigners never make mistakes
when they speak English
4. If too many native
speakers break a rule,______.
A. what
they use will become right B. they are against
the law
C. they should say sorry to
others D. they will become heroes
5.
When we speak a foreign language, we should ______
.
A. speak in Chinese way
B. speak by the rules
C. speak to native
speakers D. not be afraid of making
mistakes

As one comes to some crossroads, he or
she sees a sign which says that drivers have to
stop when they come to the main road ahead. At
other crossroads, drivers have to go slow,
but
they do not actually have to stop (unless, of
course, there is something coming along
the
main road); and at still others, they do not have
either to stop or to go slow, because
they are
themselves on the main road.
Mr Williams,
who was always a very careful driver, was driving
home from work one
evening when he came to a
crossroad. It had a “Slow” sign. He slowed down
when he came
to the main road, looked both
ways to see that nothing was coming, and then
drove across
without stopping completely.
At once he heard a police whistle, so he
pulled into the side of the road and stopped. A
policeman walked over to him with a notebook
and a pen in his hand and said, “You didn't
stop at that crossing. ”
“But the sign
there doesn't say 'stop'”,answered Mr Williams.
“It just says 'Slow', and
I did go slow. ”
The policeman looked around him, and a
look of surprise came over his face. Then he
put his notebook and pen away, scratched his
head and said, “Well,I'm in the wrong
street!”

In Canada you can find dogs, cats,
horses, etc. in almost every family. These are
their pets. People love these pets and have
them as their good friends. Before they keep
them in their houses, they take them to animal
hospitals to give them injections(注射) so
that
they won't carry disease. They have special animal
food stores, though they can get
animal food
in almost every kind of store. Some people spend
around two hundred Canadian
dollars a month on
animal food. When you visit people's houses, they
would be very glad to
show you their pets and
they are very proud of them. You will also find
that almost every
family has a bird feeder in
their garden. All kinds of birds are welcomed to
come and have a
good meal. They are free to
come and go and nobody is allowed to kill any
animal in
Canada. They have a law against
killing wild animals. If you killed an animal, you
would
be punished. If an animal happened to
get run over by a car, people would be very sad
about
it.

the deserts, so people can live and
grow food. They are learning a lot about the
deserts. But
more and more of the earth is

be able to
change the desert in time.
Why is more and more land becoming desert?
Scientists think that people make

deserts. People are
doing bad things to the earth.
Some
places on the earth don't get much rain. But they
still don't become deserts. This is
because
some green plants are growing there. Small green
plants and grass are very important
to dry
places. Plants don't let the sun make the earth
even drier. Plants do not let the wind
blow
the dirt away. When a bit of rain falls, the
plants hold the water. Without plants, the
land can become desert more easily.
21.
Deserts ________ .
A. never have any
plants or animals in them
B. can all be
turned into good land before long
C. are
becoming smaller and smaller
D. get very little rain

B. Land is becoming
desert faster than scientists can change it back
into good land.
C. If scientists can
bring water to desert, people can live and grow
food there.
D. More and more places
are becoming deserts all the time.
25. After
reading this passage, we learn that ______ .
A. plants can keep dry land from becoming desert
B. it is good to get rid of the grass in
the deserts

Why do people in all countries ride in
buses to school,to work and to far places?Buses
can
go where trains and airplanes cannot. They
do not cost as much to travel on. Even though
they may not move as fast as airplanes and
trains, they sometimes take people between two
places faster. This is because they may travel
a more direct way,or may leave more often,
or
at better times.
Buses come in different
sizes. A small bus can carry only eight or ten
people. A large
one might have seats for fifty
to seventy people and have standing room for more.
Thousands of yellow school buses carry
millions of children to school every year. Most of
these buses have seats placed quite close
together to fit in as many children as possible.
Some
schools buy their own buses. Others pay
to use buses that belong to bus companies.
City and town buses carry people for short
distances. The seats of these are close
together, and there is standing room as well.
Most city buses have two doors so that people
can get on and off quickly.
Long
distance buses go from state to state or country
to country. They give people the
chance to
travel across huge stretches of land. These buses
have comfortable seats that can be
moved to
different positions. They have places to store
suitcases. Many have
washrooms. All these
things are important on a long trip.
1.
Compared with trains and planes, buses don't have
the advantage of ____ .
A. cheap fare
B. frequent travel C. safety D.
directness
2. A large bus might carry ____
people.
A. at most seventy
B. at least seventy
C. more or less than
seventy D. much more than seventy
3.
Buses have different kinds,and they ______ .
A. leave as frequently as possible
B. carry all kinds of travelers
C. carry
people according to their functions
14 110

Every day
millions of letters go from one country to
another. Letters mailed in Italy are
received
in Japan. Letters mailed in Canada are received in
Africa. On the letters are many
different
kinds of stamps, bought in different countries.
The Universal Postal Union helps each
letter get to the right place as quickly as
possible. It sets up rules about the size and
weight of letters,postcards,and small
packages
(包裹). It has rules that all countries
must follow about international postal rates(费用).
One hundred years ago,international mail
did not move so smoothly. One country did not
always accept another country's letters.
Letters from some countries were too large to fit
into
the mailboxes of other countries. Letters
travelled by many different routes(路线).Some
were lost along the way.
Sometimes
the person who sent the letter could pay only part
of the postage. The person
receiving the
letter had to pay the rest.
The United
States was the first to suggest that all countries
work together to settle the
questions of
international mail. In 1974,men from twenty-four
countries met in Switzerland
to form the
Universal Postal Union. Today, more than 120
nations belong to this
union. From its office
in Switzerland, the union helps the mail to move
safely and quickly
around the world.

The earth is
made up of several layers(地层).The top layer of the
earth is called the earth's
crust. The crust
is divided into sections which are called plates.
When two plates push against each other,or
when two plates rub against each other,an
earthquake happens. An earthquake causes the
ground above the plate to shake. The shaking
is caused by the movement of the plates.
Earthquakes are likely to happen at the
boundaries(边界) of the earth's plates. Each of

It is surprising that eating three meals a
day—breakfast,lunch and dinner-has been a
custom(习俗) only since
1890. Before this
time, people only had two meals a day—breakfast and
dinner.
In the 16th century,breakfast
was only to break one's fast(随便吃一点). But 200 years
later it had become a large meal,
not just for
family, but for numbers of guests as well. It was a
social(社会的)event. It began at 10 a.m. and lasted
until
1 p.m. Then breakfast began to be less
popular. It became, instead,a lighter meal and was
taken at a much earlier hour. By
1850 it had
been pushed back to 8 a.m. and became a family
meal.
Dinner,however,went to the other
way. In the 16th century it was eaten at 11 a.m.
Years later,it had moved to the
early
afternoon,then to 5 p.m. By 1850 dinner time had
reached 7 p.m. Lunch is a recent idea. It first
appeared as a snack
to fill the gap(间隙)
between breakfast and dinner.

In many businesses, computers have
largely replaced paperwork, because they are fast,
effective, and do not make
mistakes.As one
banker said, “Unlike humans, computers never have
a bad day.” And they are honest.
Many
banks advertise that their work is “untouched by
human hands” and therefore safe from human
attraction. Obviously, computers have no
reason to steal money. But they also have no
sense, and the growing number of
computer
crimes (犯罪)shows they can be used to steal.
Computer criminals don't use guns. And even if
they are caught, it is hard to punish them because
there are no witness(证
人) and often no
proof(证据).A computer cannot remember who used it
and simply does what it is told. The head teller at
a
New York City bank used a computer to steal
more than one and a half billion dollars in just
four years.No one noticed this
because he
moved the money from someone else's
account(帐目).This man was caught only because he
was a gambler (赌
徒).When the police broke up a
gambling operation, his name was in the records.
Some clerks use the computer's power to
get revenge(报复)on bosses they consider
unfair.Recently, a large company
fired its
computer-tape assistant(助手) for reasons that were
connected with her personal rather than her
professional(职
业的) life. She was given thirty
days' notice. In those thirty days, she got rid of
all the company's computerized records.
Most computer criminals have been clerks in low
position. Now police wonder if this is “the tip of
the iceberg(冰
山)”. As one of the officials
says, “I have a feeling that there are more crimes
out there than we are catching. What we are
seeing now is all so poorly done. I wonder
what the real experts are doing—the ones who
really know how a computer
works. ”

computers—computers work for us at home, in
offices, and in factories. But it is also true
that many children today are using computers

The President gets about 4,000 letters every week.
He answers everyone who writes to him on special

This year some
twenty three hundred teenagers(young people aged
from 13-19)from all over the world will spend
about
ten months in U.S.homes. They will
attend U.S.schools, meet U.S.teenagers, and form
impressions of the real American
teenagers.
American teenagers will go to other countries to
learn new languages and gain a new understanding
of the rest of
the world.
Here is a
two way student exchange in action.Fred, nineteen,
spent last year in Germany with George's family. In
turn,
George's son, Mike, spent a year in
Fred's home in America.
Fred, a lively
young man, knew little German when he arrived, but
after two months' study, the language began to
come to him. School was completely different
from what he had expected—much harder. Students
rose respectfully when
the teacher entered the
room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the
six that are usual in the United States. There
were
almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The family's word
was law, and all activities were around the family
rather than the
individual. Fred found the
food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a
car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends
in a car and go out and have a good time. In
Germany, you walk, but you soon
learn to like
it.”
At the same time,in America,Mike,a
friendly German boy,was also forming his idea.“I
suppose I should criticize
(批评)American
schools,”he says.“It is far too easy by our level.
But I have to say that I like it very much. In
Germany
we do nothing but study. Here we take
part in many outside activities. I think that
maybe your schools are better in training
for
citizens(市民). There ought to be some middle ground
between the two.”

Most people

today's world to find work for everyone. The
economy
(经济) of the world needs to grow by 4%

jobs.

Knowledge is power. But there is one thing
that we must remember. A strong mind needs a
strong body in order to make
it useful.
There are lots of good exercises. They are helpful
and healthy. Many of them may be taken indoors
during rainy
weather. Indoor exercises,
however, are never as helpful as those taken
outdoors in fresh air. It is because in fresh air
more oxygen(氧气) is taken into our body and
more wastes are given off. The air in the house
does not remain fresh very
long. But out of
doors it is usually fresh.
But what shall
we play? There are a number of games such as
football, basketball and races. Any game with
plenty of
movement is good. The best are those
which are played out of doors.
Don't
neglect(忽视) your body. It is of as much importance
as your mind. Our country now needs men with
strong
minds, good judgement(判断力) and healthy
bodies.

Australia is nearly as large as the

people to live in. Around the edge(边缘)
of this
huge dry part are large sheep and cattle farms. A
few of them are as large as the smallest states in
America. One of
the nearest neighbours are
many hundred miles away.
The two-way radio
is very important to people who live on these
great Australian farms. It works much like a
telephone. A person can listen to someone
else's talk and then give an answer.
When
these radios first came into use,the government
set up a special two-way radio
programme.Then,people on the
large farms could
talk to a doctor hundreds of miles away. They
could tell the doctor about someone who was
sick,and the
doctor could let them know how to
care for the sick person.
Since the large
farms were so far away from the towns, the
children could not go to school.Radio schools were
set up for
them in some areas. At a certain
time each day,the boys and girls turn on their
radios and listen to teachers in cities miles
away.
Families on the large farms
wanted to give news to their neighbours.“Round
robin(知更鸟)”talks by radio were started
to keep
families in touch with each other. They could talk
about who was going away or who was sick or who
was getting
married. The men could talk about
their sheep and cattle and how much money the
market would pay for them.In many
ways the
radio became a newspaper for the farm people of

snake bites that led me to this
career,” he
said.
In 1963, after his army service,
Shu entered a medical school and later became a
doctor of Chinese medicine. As part
of his
studies he had to work in the mountains. There he
often heard of people who had their arms or legs
cut off after a
snake bite in order to save
their lives.
“I was greatly upset by the
story of an old farmer I met. It was a very hot
afternoon. The old man was pulling grass in his
field when he felt a pain in his left hand. He
at once realized that he had been bitten by a
poisonous snake. In no time, he
wrapped a
cloth tightly around his arm to stop the poison
spreading to the heart. Rushing home he shouted
‘Bring me the
knife'. Minutes later the man
lost his arm forever. ”

Crows(乌鸦)
eat many different kinds of foods. They like many

insects
such as beetles(甲虫). A crow will eat
smaller birds and their eggs. Crows that live near
the shore often eat shellfish.
Most
crows live in the wild, but sometimes a crow is

pets,a crow and a
puppy(小狗). One day the puppy
vanished. Its owner looked for it but couldn't
find it anywhere. They feared that their

Suppose you are in an airplane flying over the
field of Japan. When you look down, the land is
like a big checkerboard
(棋盘). You see what
seems to be wide steps around the sides of
mountains. The wide steps are green fields. From
the
air, these fields look like great green
stairways.
Japan is a small country. All
of her land would not fill California. Yet she has
almost half as many people as in the
whole
United States. Much of Japan is covered by
mountains. Only a small part of her land can be
used to grow
crops. The Japanese farmer must
use every bit of his land. Even the mountainsides
must be farmed. The Japanese farmer
grows rice
in little fields called “paddies”. These paddies
are cut like stair steps down the mountains. Low
walls of earth
divide the paddies. Rice grows
in the water held by these walls.
Hundreds of years ago,Japan looked very different.
That was before her farmers gave Japan a new face.

Macao is only forty miles from Hong Kong and it is
easy to reach. You can get there by sea. It is an
interesting place
and it has a long history.
Macao is part of China and most people living
there are Chinese.
The first Europeans
in Macao came from Portugal. More than four
hundred years ago the Portuguese went there to
trade
with China. Some settled and made their
homes there. They built strong forts(要塞)to guard
the city and the harbor(港
口). They also built
churches,schools,hospitals and other places.
Slowly the city grew. People from many other
countries
came to live and work in Macao.
Today many people live in Macao. Some
only go there to watch dog-racing or motor-racing
or to gamble(赌博)
with their money. But Macao
is a quiet and peaceful place. It is pleasant just
to walk around and look at the old buildings
and forts. You feel you are back in the old
days. Of course, some of the buildings are now in
ruins(废墟). The Church
of St. Paul has only the
front wall with many steps leading up to it. But
it is still interesting to see.
When you
are hot and tired, there are small cool gardens to
rest in. When you are hungry, there are good
restaurants with
many kinds of food. Nearby
are some islands, which are also nice to visit and
are easy to get in. There are certainly a lot to

We can make mistakes at any age.
Some mistakes we make are about money. But most
mistakes are about people:“Did
Jerry really
care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that
great job,did Jim really feel good about it as a
friend? Or
did he envy(嫉妒) my luck?” When we
look back, questions like these can make us feel
bad. But when we look back,
it's too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends or
our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides real
meaning. And if we
don't really listen,we miss
the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone
tells you,“You are a lucky dog”. Is he really
on your side? If he says,“You are a lucky boy”
or “You are a lucky girl”,that's being friendly.
But “lucky dog”,there's
a bit of envy in the
“dog”. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But
bringing in the “dog” puts you down a little. What
he may
be saying is that he doesn't think you
should have such good luck.
“Just think
of all the things you have to be thankful for” is
another example that says one thing and means
another. It
could mean that the speaker is
trying to get you to look upon your problems as
part of your life as a whole. But is he?
Hidden in this phrase is the thought that your
problem can't be important. It's telling you to
think of all the poor people in
hunger and
cold in the world when you haven't got a date for
Saturday night.
How can you tell the
real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to
take a good look at the person talking. Do
his
words fit the way he looks? Does what he says
square with the tone of his voice? His
posture(姿势)? The look in
his eyes? Stop and
think. The minute you spend thinking about the real
meaning of what people say to you may save
another mistake.
18. The examples in the
first paragraph show the writer ___.
A. feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends
were to him
B. feels he may not have
“read” his friends' true feelings correctly

according to the writer.

notice his tone, his posture and the look in his

Our surroundings are
being polluted faster than man's present efforts
to prevent pollution. Time is bringing us more
people, and more people will bring us more
industry, more cars, larger cities and the growing
use of man-made materials.
What can
explain and solve the problem? The fact is that
pollution is caused by man ─ by his desire(欲望) for
a
modern way of life. We make “increasing
industrialization” our chief aim. So we are often
ready to offer everything:clean
air,pure
water, good food, our health and the future of our
children. There is a constant(连续不断的)flow of people
from
the countryside into the cities, eager for
the benefits of our modern society. But as our
technological achievements(成就)
have grown in
the last twenty years, pollution has become a
serious problem.
Isn't it time we
stopped to ask ourselves where we are going ─ and
why? It makes one think of the story of the
airline
pilot(飞行员)who told his passengers over
the loudspeaker,“I've some good news and some bad
news. The good news is
that we are making
rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news
is that we are lost and can't know where we are
going.” The sad fact is that this becomes a
true story when we speak of our modern society.

Have you ever heard your own voice? “Of course,”
you say.
Has anyone else ever heard your
voice? Again you say,“Of course.”
But
that's not quite true. Nobody else has ever heard
your voice—the way you hear it. When you talk, you
set up sound
waves. The air outside your head
carries the sound waves to your outer ears. But,
of course, the sound of your voice

It was already late when we
started for the next town, which according to the
map was about fifteen miles away on the
other
side of the hill. There we felt sure that we would
find a bed for the night. Darkness fell soon after
we left the village,
but luckily we met no one
as we drove fast along the narrow(狭窄的) road that
led to the hill. As we climbed higher, it
became colder and rain began to fall, making
it difficult at times to see the road. I asked
John to drive more slowly.
After we had
travelled for about twenty miles, there was still
no sign of the town which was marked on the map,
we
were beginning to get worried. Then,
without warning, the car stopped. A quick
examination showed that we had run
out of
petrol(汽油). Although we had little food with us,
only a few biscuits(小面包) and some chocolate, we
decided
to spend the night in the car.
Our meal was soon over, and then I tried to go to
sleep at once, but John, who was a poor sleeper,
got out of the car
after a few minutes and
went for a walk up the hill. Soon he came running
back. From the top of the hill he had seen, in
the valley below, the lights of the town we

there is no one here but myself, what is there to
fear(害怕)?” So he was
no longer afraid of being
alone.
But Self was not happy, and we
still believe that when we are alone we can not
feel happy. Self wanted someone else to
be
with him. Self was quite big and so he divided
himself into two parts. One part was like a man
and the other part was
like a woman.
The man held the woman in his arms and from them
came the human race. But the woman became afraid
and so she
decided to hide(躲藏). First she
turned herself into a cow. Then the man turned
himself into a bull and together they made
all
the cows in the world. Then she became a horse and
he also changed to a horse and from them came all
the others. She
became a goat then a sheep,
and in the end every animal on the earth. The man
also changed into the male of every animal
and
kept following her. From the two of them came all
the other creatures(生物)on the earth.

Visitors to Britain are
always complaining(抱怨) about English food. But
they do not really know what they are talking
about because they rarely get a chance to eat
it. Most of the restaurants in large towns have
foreign owners and serve foreign
food. When
visitors are invited to eat in an English home,
their hosts(主人) often feel they must offer them
something
foreign and special.
Those
of us who do know English food realize that at its
best it can be really very good. On the other hand
it is true to say
that it is sometimes
terrible. Part of the problem is that we are not
really interested in food. We eat to live, but we
do not
live to eat. So we don't gene-rally
spend the necessary time and energy needed cooking
really good meals. We prefer food
that is
simple and easy to cook or ready food which only
needs heating up before eating.
You can
find the best English food in the country away
from the large towns, where life is slower and
people are not in
such a hurry. But, of
course, most visitors come to London. They come
because they are interested in shopping and
sightseeing. They come not because of the
food, so why should they complain about it?

If you go into the forest with friends, stay with
them. If you don't, you may get lost. If you get
lost, this is what you
should do. Sit down and
stay where you are. Don't try to find your friends
— let them find you. You can help them find
you by staying in one place. There is another
way to help your friends or other people to find
you. You can shout or whistle
(吹口哨) three
times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times
again. Any signal(信号) given three times is a call
for help.
Keep on shouting or
whistling. Always three times altogether. When
people hear you, they will know that you are not
just making a noise for fun. They will let you
know that they have heard your signal. They will
give you two shouts or two
whistles. When a
signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call
for help.
If you don't think that you will
get help before night comes, try to make a little
house with branches(树枝). Make
yourself a bed
with leaves and grass.
When you need some
water, you have to leave your little branch house
to look for it. Don't just walk away. Pick off
small branches and drop them as you walk in
order to go back again easily. When you are lost,
the most important thing to

one place.

Students who say they never or hardly

they make
many mistakes.

The students who use dictionaries most do
not learn especially well either. The ones who
look up every new word do not
read fast.
Therefore they do not have time to read much.
Those who use small two-language dictionaries have
the worst
problems. Their dictionaries often
give only one or two words as a translation of
English. But one English word often has
many
translations in a foreign language and one foreign
word has many translations in English.
The
most successful students are those who use large
college edition dictionaries with about 100,000
words but do not use
them too often. When they
are reading, these students
first try to get
the general idea and understand new words from the
context(上下文).Then they reread and use the
dictionary
to look up only key words that they
still do not understand. They use dictionaries more
for writing. If they are not sure how to
spell
a word,or divide it into syllables (音节), they
always use a dictionary. Also, if they think a
noun might have an
unusual plural form or a
verb might have an unusual past form, they check
these in a dictionary.

Australia's worst pests are the rabbits,

wild for sport hunting. In less than
100
years, the rabbits grow into the millions of ones,
leaving large areas of land looking like the
surface of the moon due to
thousands of rabbit
caves. The spread(蔓延)of the rabbits in Australia
was the fastest of all animals in the world. The
spread of the rabbits' disease in 1950 cut the
number, but it was not until 1997 when the spread
of another disease targeted
(瞄准)the pests that
the number was finally brought under control. Farm
losses due to rabbits today still remain a

The European red foxes,

medicines while asleep for disease treatment. In
China, since ancient times, people have put
plants into pillows for their health. Medicinal
pillows get medical treatment
closely with
people's life and keep the people working in
process. Back in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 907),
the famous
Chinese doctor Sun Simiao made
medicinal pillows to treat aches in the neck and
head, getting good results.The medicine
that
should be put into the pillow should be carefully
chosen according to one's illness.
Pillows filled with the skins of beans, seeds,
dried flowers and wheat are good for the eyesight
and keeping the mind
clear,since their smell
helps one go to sleep. Furthermore,in South China,
a strange pillow has long been popular during
hot seasons.Peasants collect silk-worm

No one can
believe that the over 6,300 kilometer Great Wall
might disappear some day.Believe it or not, the
Great Wall
is being destroyed by people. Less
than 20 per cent of the Great Wall built in the
Ming Dynasty, is still perfect, but about
80
per cent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called
“great” mostly because of its amazing length. But
we should realize
that the length was made up
of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save
the Great Wall, it will become a series of
separate wasteland rather than a historic
site.
The Great Wall is actually a series
of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties
over the past 2,000 years. It began in
the
rule of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the
Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), and lasted into the Ming
Dynasty. The
parts built before the Ming
Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are
familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing
and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have
been open to tourists for many years. But those
sections far away from the
public eyes have
been almost forgotten.
Few local people
knew the 3 metre high walls made of earth and
stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The
lack
of knowledge is considered as one of the
main reasons behind human.
The bricks on
the Great Wall are carried off by countryside
people to build their houses, sheep corrals(畜栏) and
pigsties(猪圈).Some were taken away to build
roads.Bricks carved with people's names are put
away as
remembrance. Rubbish is spread over
the battlements(城垛). The bricks can be sold for 15
yuan per tractor load. Those
who destroyed and
are destroying the Wall know its name, but are not
clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a
long
time to let them know this. The local
farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall
but dug out the entire base.
It is
necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all,
the officials should be aware of the importance of
the Great
Wall.Young Chinese should know more
about the nation's great civilization(文明)and learn
to love it.
9. Why does the author say the
Great Wall might disappear?

National High School English Speaking Competition,

was an expenses paid trip to the international
English-speaking competition, to be held in
London in May 2003. It will be the first time
that a Chinese student will have taken part in the
international one.
Yesterday, competitors
from around China presented a prepared speech on
the topic “Learning English — My Personal

they picked out before going on stage. The topics
came from all kinds of
fields. All the
competitors did a pretty good job, said Helen, the
English language teaching manager of the British
Council, who was a judge in the competition.
She said it was amazing that the high school
students in China could use
English so well.
However, what surprised the judges most was not
the students' excellent English but their wide
range of
knowledge. “I was afraid that the
questions would be too difficult for them,” said
Nie Lisheng,editor in chief(主编)of

soon I found that I didn't have a single reason to
worry, for they
seemed to know quite a lot
about things such as the solar system or AIDS
prevention,” added Nie.
Huang Qing,
another judge, said: “It shows how much the
students care about the world around them instead
of only
for their studies. I was quite
surprised that the students could deal with
questions with such deep thought and a global
view.”
Another four students won a one week

wrapped in cloth and loaded onto lorries(卡车) and
ships and carried to the new temple site. The cost
of the project is to be at least 70 million
yuan. The new place is 32 kilometres upstream on
the Yangtze.
Zhang Fei, a brave character,
in the Three Kingdoms period in the Chinese
classic “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” is

household name among the Chinese people. Zhang has
been worshipped (崇拜) as a god of protection,
especially by the
fishermen on the Yangtze
River. The temple is regarded as a cultural
treasure and must see for the 200,000 or so
visitors
each year. On October 4,thousands of
visitors from home and abroad celebrated Zhang's
1,843rd birthday in the temple.
Every
removed part will be treated with marks and

The recent death of the world's most famous
sheep—Dolly the clone—has not dampened the
enthusiasm(热情) of Chinese
scientists, who are
working hard to make more breakthroughs in clone
technology.
“It is hard to say whether
Dolly died at a relatively young age or died from
defects(缺陷)in reproduction,”Du Miao, a
researcher with the Biology and Growth
Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told
China Daily in Beijing
yesterday.“But Dolly's
case reminds us that both Chinese and foreign
scientists should put more efforts into improving
clone
technology as well as disease treatment
techniques in the field of cloning animals.” He
said his institute,in co operation(合

Yangzhou University in Eastern China's Jiangsu
Province, had cloned more than 10 sheep since 1999
and the
oldest is nearly five. They are all
still alive.
Li Ning, deputy director of
the National Key Laboratory of Agricultural and
Biological Technology, who is also a
professor
with the Beijing based China Agriculture
University,said, “Clone technology is actually
progressing well. Dolly
is the first cloned
sheep after all. Like driving cars, new drivers
meet with accidents more easily, but the more you
drive,
the easier and safer you feel.In the
future, the death rate of cloned animals will be
reduced with technological
developments.”
“Official reports show seven locally cloned sheep
are still alive. Clone technology in China is
gradually approaching(接

commercialization(商业化),” Li added.But Wang
Yu,deputy director of the Biological Technology
Centre
under the Ministry of Science and

Tokyo is one of those places that

Antarctica (南极洲), with its seemingly
endless icy beauty, is one place where one look is
worth a thousand
words. My own dream to see it
came true last January when I joined the sixth
exploration(考察) crew of the China National
Marine Bureau. We spent 10 days connecting
flights to reach our goal, but finally arrived at
the Great Wall Station on
Antarctica on the
eve of Chinese New Year.
There are only
two seasons in Antarctica: winter and summer. You
get polar(极地的) nights in winter and polar days
in summer. Day is longer than night in summer,
and the temperature often reaches below zero.
Luckily, there are no
snowstorms in summer,
which makes it the best season to travel. What I
imagined(想象) before starting for Antarctica
was a world of ice, storms, endless cold and
loneliness. When I stopped on Antarctica for the
first time, however,I saw
rich,energetic and
beautiful scenery that was beyond anything I had
imagined.
We only spent 11 days at the
South Pole(南极), but every minute was spent taking
pictures and losing our heart to the
wonderland. Beauty enveloped us as we watched
the world around us.The mountains, oceans, ice,
snow, sky, earth
and inhabitants(居民) all
seemed to have their own stories.
Rocks
from Antarctica are considered valuable.
Unfortunately, I didn't bring one back.However, my
heavy bags full
of film are certainly worth
that. It is in these pictures that the true
Antarctica comes alive.

For the first time in Hong
Kong's history, an entertainer(艺人) has been
written into middle school textbooks. He is
considered one of the best actors in Hong
Kong. Yes, he is Chow Yun fat.
The example
of his long hard struggle for success has been
used in a chapter in a Hong Kong middle school
textbook. Using his experience, students can
learn to make the most of their time and to
grab(抓住) every opportunity
(机会) to succeed.
On hearing about this, Chow said happily,
“I really hope that my experiences can make young
people understand that
one should not be
afraid of difficulties and setbacks(挫折),for they
are the only way to success.”
Indeed,
Chow has travelled a long and difficult path to
reach his success. In 1955,he was born into a poor
family in
Hong Kong. When he was 17, he had to
leave school. He worked in a number of jobs—as a
postman,camera salesman
and taxi driver.These
experiences paved the way for him to play all
kinds of roles later in life.
Chow broke
into the film industry in the late 1970s. He was
one of the hardest working actors and starred in a

40s, he had to learn English. He even put
chopsticks
in his mouth to practise

in the UK, will dress in a giant rabbit suit and
parade (游

John Slater will hide chocolate eggs in bushes,
trees and flower beds. Later in the day, about 60
local children will race
to find the eggs
until Slater blows his whistle. Then the child
with the most eggs will win a prize.
This

Slater will be one of the many Easter bunnies (兔子)
bringing chocolate eggs and joy to children
across Britain on Easter Sunday.
“I love
seeing the children's faces. They have no idea
that it is really me under the rabbit suit,”Slater

The Egg Hunt is an Easter tradition
in Britain and the US. Children enjoy two weeks
off school. And most adults get
Good Friday
(the Friday before Easter) and Easter Monday off
work.
With all this fun, it's easy to
forget the reason for Easter.
It is a
Christian festival. Good Friday remembers the day
Jesus Christ died, and Easter Sunday celebrates
his resurrection
(复活). The date of Easter
changes each year, but it is always in March or
April.
Easter marks the end of a time
called Lent (四旬斋), which lasts for 40 days.
During this period, many British people give up
something they enjoy. Children often give up
chocolate and are
rewarded with chocolate eggs
on Easter Sunday.
Easter is also a family
time. Families come together to enjoy traditional
food, such as hot cross buns (圆面

buns with a cross on top, which represents(代表) the
cross upon which Jesus died. Other
traditional
foods include roast lamb(烤羊肉)and roast duck.

“I love Easter because
I love holidays and I love hocolate.”

Central Bangkok's Lumpini Park becomes a

Irish wolfhound(猎狼犬). When President of France
Eisenhower died, there was a horse in the
funeral(葬礼)
procession. This was for luck.
Several years ago in Britain, Prince
Charles went fox hunting. When they caught the
first fox, they killed it.Then they
put some
of the blood on Prince Charles. They did the same
thing two years later, when Princess Anne went fox
hunting for
the first time. A lot of people
don't like fox hunting, and they were very angry
when this happened. It is called “being
blooded”;and fox hunters think that is very
necessary.
It brings good luck to the new
fox hunter, when the blood of the first fox is put
on him or her. In the country,it is very
lucky
when you see the first lamb in spring while birds
are usually unlucky, but eagles are different. They
are lucky, and
the Romans have the eagle as
their symbol(象征).Also gulls are lucky.Sailors are
very happy when gulls follow their ships.

There're five people at our
table, including myself. I've already learnt a
great deal about them in the short time we've
been at sea, although we rarely meet except at
mealtimes.
First of all, there's Dr Stone.
He's a man of about sixty five, with gray hair and
a friendly face. He gave up his work
a short
while ago and is now travelling round the world
before he retires(退休) to some quiet country
village. As a young
man, he served for many
years as a doctor in the Army and visited many
countries. He's told us a great deal about the
city to
which we are going.
Then
there's “Grandmother”. I call her that because her
name escapes me.In spite of being a grandmother,
she looks
remarkably young, not more than
fifty. She's on her way to visit a daughter who
went to Australia some years
ago. Naturally
she is very excited at the thought of seeing her
again, and her three grandchildren, whom she has
never
seen.
Then there's a man I don't
care for very much, an engineer by the name of
Barlow. He has been on leave in England and
is
now returning to his work in Singapore.
The other person who sits at our table is Mrs
Hunt. I've found out hardly anything about her.
She's extremely quiet and
rarely talks, except
to consult(咨询) the doctor about children's various
illnesses. She's on her way to join her husband
in India.

Australia's worst pests are the rabbits,
introduced by a settler who released 24 into the
wild for sport hunting. In less than
100
years, the rabbits grow into the millions of ones,
leaving large areas of land looking like the
surface of the moon due to
thousands of rabbit
caves. The spread(蔓延)of the rabbits in Australia
was the fastest of all animals in the world. The
spread of the rabbits' disease in 1950 cut the
number, but it was not until 1997 when the spread
of another disease targeted
(瞄准)the pests that
the number was finally brought under control. Farm
losses due to rabbits today still remain a
surprising
total A$200 million (US$112
million)a year.
The European red foxes,
also released for sport hunting, are growing and
eating sheep flocks, costing farmers A$40
million (US$22.4 million) a year. The State of
Victoria offers a A$10 (US$5.6) prize for each fox
tail and has
gathered 25,000 in a few months.

Over a third of one's life
is spent sleeping with one's head on a pillow(枕头).
A good pillow,in its right height and
composition, has important effects on one's
sleep and health. There is an old way of medical
treatment(治疗) called “smell
the medicine to
cure(治愈)the disease” which means that people smell
medicines while asleep for disease treatment. In
China, since ancient times, people have put
plants into pillows for their health. Medicinal
pillows get medical treatment
closely with
people's life and keep the people working in
process. Back in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 907),
the famous
Chinese doctor Sun Simiao made
medicinal pillows to treat aches in the neck and
head, getting good results.The medicine
that
should be put into the pillow should be carefully
chosen according to one's illness.
Pillows filled with the skins of beans, seeds,
dried flowers and wheat are good for the eyesight
and keeping the mind
clear,since their smell
helps one go to sleep. Furthermore,in South China,
a strange pillow has long been popular during
hot seasons.Peasants collect silk-worm
excrement(排泄物)and fill pillows with it. Such
pillows then fetch a high price,
because people
believe they can successfully cool their babies.

No one can
believe that the over 6,300 kilometer Great Wall
might disappear some day.Believe it or not, the
Great Wall
is being destroyed by people. Less
than 20 per cent of the Great Wall built in the
Ming Dynasty, is still perfect, but about
80
per cent is in danger. The Great Wall can be called
“great” mostly because of its amazing length. But
we should realize
that the length was made up
of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save
the Great Wall, it will become a series of
separate wasteland rather than a historic
site.
The Great Wall is actually a series
of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties
over the past 2,000 years. It began in
the
rule of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang of the
Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), and lasted into the Ming
Dynasty. The
parts built before the Ming
Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are
familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing
and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have
been open to tourists for many years. But those
sections far away from the
public eyes have
been almost forgotten.
Few local people
knew the 3 metre high walls made of earth and
stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The
lack
of knowledge is considered as one of the
main reasons behind human.
The bricks on
the Great Wall are carried off by countryside
people to build their houses, sheep corrals(畜栏) and
pigsties(猪圈).Some were taken away to build
roads.Bricks carved with people's names are put
away as
remembrance. Rubbish is spread over
the battlements(城垛). The bricks can be sold for 15
yuan per tractor load. Those
who destroyed and
are destroying the Wall know its name, but are not
clear about its cultural meaning. It will take a
long
87 110
高一英语阅读训练100篇
time
to let them know this. The local farmers not only
carried off the body of the Wall but dug out the
entire base.
It is necessary to protect
the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should
be aware of the importance of the Great
Wall.Young Chinese should know more about the
nation's great civilization(文明)and learn to love
it.
9. Why does the author say the Great Wall
might disappear?
A. It is useless from
now on.
B. It will be replaced
by a new one.
C. Some parts of it are
being destroyed.
D. It is too old to be
used again.
10. Which of the following is
TRUE?

the Ming Dynasty.
B.There are only two
wonders in the world, one, the Great Wall, the
other, the pyramids in Egypt.
C. The
first part of the Great Wall was built in 221-206
BC.
D. The Qin Great Wall was protected
well.

far away from the public eyes”(in Paragraph 2)

______.
A. that are too difficult to undeand
B. nobody can watch
C. that are

D. that are
not well known to the public
12. What's the
main reason of the Great Wall's being destroyed?
A. The local people are short of culture
knowledge.
B. The local people need
bricks and stones to build houses.
C. The
local people think that the Great Wall is not
important.
D. The local people are
against the government.

seemed to know quite a lot
about things such as the solar system or AIDS
prevention,” added Nie.
Huang Qing,
another judge, said: “It shows how much the
students care about the world around them instead
of only
for their studies. I was quite
surprised that the students could deal with
questions with such deep thought and a global
view.”

Just like the
Abu Simbel, in Aswan, Egypt, the Temple of Zhang
Fei had to go upstream to a high place along the
Yangtze River, as a result of the rising water
level, as the Three Gorges Project is being built.
Standing for centuries on
the northern bank of
the Yangtze River, the temple had showed the Three
Kingdoms period (AD 220 280) of China's
history. Before the project, the engineers had
visited the Abu Simbel in Egypt. They would do as

had done. It will be
rebuilt in its copy form.
On October 8,
the temple was being torn down piece by piece.
More than 300 workers and experts have been
working
round the clock. Bricks, wooden rails,
stone figures, even time-worn stone steps have
been removed with great

in that.It is different
when one wants to walk.
At certain times

People are very polite; there are just

The worst time to be in the

nightclubs are closing and everybody wants to go
home. There are 35,000 nightclubs in Tokyo,

The Musical
Heart
This is the story of a small boy,
who lived a long time ago in Germany. His name was
George Frederick Handle.
As a very young
boy, he loved music most. But his father didn't
allow him to play any music.
Then one day
he waited until he was all alone at home. Quickly
he ran to his hiding place; he and a friend
carried a small
piano into the house. He
decided to put it in his hiding place. There no one
could see it.
That night, when everyone
else was asleep, he went to his hiding place. The
moon was shining through a broken
window. He
sat on a box and began to play the piano. At that
moment he knew he could only be happy playing
music the
rest of his life.
He played
on and on, and he filled his house with his music.
“George!” cried his father. “What are you
doing? Stop that playing now!”
The music
stopped. George had tears in his eyes. Then he
turned to his father and said,“Papa, you must
understand. I
love music. It is my whole
life.”
“Now listen to me, you foolish
boy,” said Mr Handle. “I want you to be a rich
man. I want you to work hard.I don't
want you
to be a poor man all your life. You must leave
music and become a doctor. Don't let me see you at
the piano
again.”
One day George found

Antarctica (南极洲), with
its seemingly endless icy beauty, is one place
where one look is worth a thousand
words. My
own dream to see it came true last January when I
joined the sixth exploration(考察) crew of the China
National
Marine Bureau. We spent 10 days
connecting flights to reach our goal, but finally
arrived at the Great Wall Station on
Antarctica on the eve of Chinese New Year.
There are only two seasons in Antarctica:
winter and summer. You get polar(极地的) nights in
winter and polar days
in summer. Day is longer
than night in summer, and the temperature often
reaches below zero. Luckily, there are no
snowstorms in summer, which makes it the best
season to travel. What I imagined(想象) before
starting for Antarctica
was a world of
ice, storms, endless cold and loneliness. When I
stopped on Antarctica for the first time,
however,I saw
rich,energetic and beautiful
scenery that was beyond anything I had imagined.
We only spent 11 days at the South
Pole(南极), but every minute was spent taking
pictures and losing our heart to the
wonderland. Beauty enveloped us as we watched
the world around us.The mountains, oceans, ice,
snow, sky, earth
and inhabitants(居民) all
seemed to have their own stories.
Rocks
from Antarctica are considered valuable.
Unfortunately, I didn't bring one back.However, my
heavy bags full
of film are certainly worth
that. It is in these pictures that the true
Antarctica comes alive.

On March
31, John Slater, a 45-year-old man from Cardiff,
in the UK, will dress in a giant rabbit suit and
parade (游
行) in front of over 100 people.
John Slater will hide chocolate eggs in bushes,
trees and flower beds. Later in the day, about 60
local children will race
to find the eggs
until Slater blows his whistle. Then the child
with the most eggs will win a prize.
This
event is called an Easter Egg Hunt (复活节寻彩蛋活动).
Slater will be one of the many Easter bunnies (兔子)

bringing
chocolate eggs and joy to children across Britain
on Easter Sunday.
“I love seeing the
children's faces. They have no idea that it is
really me under the rabbit suit,”Slater said.
The Egg Hunt is an Easter tradition in Britain and
the US. Children enjoy two weeks off school. And
most adults get
Good Friday (the Friday before
Easter) and Easter Monday off work.
With
all this fun, it's easy to forget the reason for
Easter.
It is a Christian festival. Good
Friday remembers the day Jesus Christ died, and
Easter Sunday celebrates his resurrection
(复活). The date of Easter changes each year, but
it is always in March or April.
Easter
marks the end of a time called Lent (四旬斋), which
lasts for 40 days.
During this period,
many British people give up something they enjoy.
Children often give up chocolate and are
rewarded with chocolate eggs on Easter Sunday.
Easter is also a family time. Families
come together to enjoy traditional food, such as
hot cross buns (圆面
包) . These are bread buns
with a cross on top, which represents(代表) the
cross upon which Jesus died. Other
traditional
foods include roast lamb(烤羊肉)and roast duck.
Easter is a holiday enjoyed by all, especially
children. As 8-year-old Kierran Mann, from the
north of England, says,
“I love Easter because
I love holidays and I love hocolate.”

Slater will dress in a giant rabbit suit and
