3. 李娜:中国网坛个性“一姐”! “My dream has
come true. I have
always wanted to be a Grand
Slam (大满贯) champion.” These are
the words of
Chinese tennis player Li Na after she became the
first Asian woman to win a Grand Slam final in
the French Open
on June 4, 2011. “People were
saying I’m getting old. So this
is a great
success for such an old woman,” the 29-year-old
girl
joked. Miss Li has a tattoo (纹身). She has
dyed her hair many
different colors. And, at
the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she told
her fans
to “shut up” when they got too noisy in their
support.
Li Na was born in Wuhan, she started
to play tennis at the age
of 6. She once
recalled: “As a child, I felt sad because every
day I had to wake up early to practice. After
school I had to
practice more. I didn’t have
time to play.” Luckily, the
strong girl didn’t
give up, thus making history for Chinese
tennis time after time. Now the new champion
is already thinking
about winning another
Grand Slam title. “When you have one
title,
surely you will think about another,” she says,
not
hiding her ambition (雄心). “Chinese people
are so lacking (缺
乏) in confidence on the
tennis court. If there is a person like
me who
can prove we Chinese can do it, the other young
players
in China will feel the same,” she
said. 根据短文内容,选择

4. 动车追尾引起的思考 On the night of 23
July, 2011, a fast
running train D301 from
Beijing to Fuzhou suddenly hit another
train
which had already stopped there. The motor car
accident
happened in Wenzhou, China's eastern
province of Zhejiang. It
caused four carriages
to fall off a bridge which is at least
30
metres high from the ground. 40 people have died
in the
accident. Among them were 2 foreigners:
an Italian woman,
Assunta Liguori, and a
Chinese American, Cao Erxing. So far,
most of
the 39 bodies have been claimed by their
relatives,
based on ID cards, clothes and
other characteristics, but the
results of DNA
tests are coming out in about one week or two.
Another 210 people have been taken to
hospitals in Wenzhou after
the accident. The
accident study shows that it is the lightning
strike that caused the big accident: the first
train lost power
because of a lightning strike
and had to stop on the rail way.
And after a
few minutes it was soon hit from the back by
another
train following it. After the
accident, questions have been
raised over
“what caused the accident” and “how to do with
it”. During a visit to Wenzhou, where 39
people have been
killed last weekend, Premier
Wen calls for an transparent
investigation
into the cause of the accident, and he once again
emphasized(强调) the importance of putting
safety first in the
country’s development.

31 October, 2011, a baby was born in a
hospital in Manila, the
Philippines. It’s a
baby girl with 5.5 pounds, and the world’s
population reached seven billion. United
Nations Population
Fund (基金会) staff gave a
cake to the family of newborn baby
girl named
Danica Camacho. The birth came a day ahead of what
the United Nations had proclaimed(公布) as The
Day of 7 Billion.
The Philippines is the 12th
most populous country in the world.
Only 50
years ago, the Philippines’ population stood at
27.1
million. Today they are about 95 million.
That’s a 250 percent
jump. Such a country
waits for the baby of Mary Rose Castin,
the
21-year-old wife. “I didn’t realize there were so
many
people,” said Mary Rose when she was told
that the world’s
population was reaching seven
billion. The world’s population
didn’t hit the
1 billion until the 19th century. But only just
a hundred years later, we were 2 billion
strong. Every day,
382,000 babies are born all
over the world. Most of the births
are in
countries already struggling to feed a growing
number
of hungry mouths. By 2100, Earth will
be welcoming its 10
billionth baby. In the
world of 7 billion, large populations
necessarily need more houses. Medical
care will also be a
serious problem. An
increasing population is an environmental
problem in many countries. There is not enough
space, and there
is too much traffic, noise
and pollution. To not act now will
make the
problems harder to solve later. 根据短文内容,选择

6.“活取熊胆”引关注! A company, Guizhentang,
has had
to face a storm of criticism. The company is in
the bear
bile business. They have bear farms
in which bile is taken out
and used in
traditional Chinese medicine and for other
purposes.
Bile is a liquid that is produced in
the liver and stored in
the gall bladder(胆囊).
In bears (and in humans too), bile is
necessary to help digest fatty foods.
Traditional Chinese
medicine uses bear bile to
treat pain, fever and vision problems.
Bile
for traditional Chinese medicine used to be
collected by
killing bears, but it was
discovered that bear bile could be
got
by keeping the bears alive and just “milking” them
by
putting a rubber tube into the bodies of
bears. Unfortunately,
this is a painful
process and the bears have to live a life of
suffering. Animal rights groups want this
practice to stop.
They say it is a cruel way
to treat animals. Guizhentang
disagrees. They
say the practice isn’t harmful and that they
are actually helping the bears. There are
fewer Chinese black
bears, from which the bile
is taken, because human activity is
taking
over the forest the bears live in. The company
says bear
farms are a way to protect the
species. On the one hand, we use
many types of
animals for food, clothing, medicine and for
medical research. On the other hand, we should
know that causing
animals great pain is wrong.
There are man-made substitutes (替
代品) for bear
bile that work just as well as the real thing,
so bear farms aren’t really necessary. If G
