(一)at first
该短语表示“最初;首先”，相当于at the
beginning。比如：
It is easy at first, but we
are in deep water now. (起先很容易，
但现在我们陷入了困境。)
We didn't trust him at first, but his
charming manner
completely disarmed us.
(我们开始时并不信任他，但他令人愉快
的举止完全消除了我们的疑虑。)
【注意】
注意区分at
first和firstly，后者表示先后顺序中的“第一或首
先”。如：
Firstly, China should have a development program
for
young fencers.
(第一，中国应有一项培养少年儿童击剑运动员的发
展计划。)

(首先，让
我们来处理最紧要的问题。)
(二)at once
该短语表
示“立即;同时”。当表示“立即”时，相当于
immediately;当表示“同时”时，相当于a
t the same time。如：
立即：Go at once, or I will unleash my dog on you!
(立刻走，
要不我就放我的狗咬你!)
同时：We should not try
to accomplish two tasks at once.
(我们不能指望同时完成两件工作。)
(三)at home
该短语表示“在家里”。注意home前不要加任何修饰语。常
和stay或be搭配使用。比如：
Please specify when you will be at home
tomorrow. (请确
切说明你明天何时会在家。)
You can stay
at home and watch TV. ( 你可以待在家里并且
看电视。)
He spent a lonesome evening at home.
(他在家里度过了一
个寂寞的夜晚。)
【注意】
注意at
home也可以引申为“自在;熟悉”。如：
自在：Make the new
students feel at home in your school.
(让新生们在你们的学校里感到舒适自在。)
熟悉：He is at home
with this subject. ( 他熟悉这一学科。)
(四)at present
该短语表示“现在;目前”。如：
At present the people
in this country are increasingly
awakening.
(目前，这个国家的人民正在日益觉醒。)
(五)at last
该短语表示“最后;终于”。相当于at length。如：
最后：At last he successfully solved the problem.
(最后他成
功地解决了这个问题。)
终于：The government came
out with the truth at last. (政
府终于公布了事实*。)
(六)at any rate
该短语表示“无论如何”。如：
At any
rate, the medical supplies will reach you within a
week. (无论如何，医疗物资会在一周内到达。)
(七)at heart
该短语表示“在内心;本质上”。如：
在内心：Indeed he has a
solemn face, but he is very
humorous at heart.
(他的确有一副严肃的脸孔，但内心却是很富幽
默感。)
本质上：Byron was
at heart a man of action. (拜伦在本质上
是一个活动家。)
(八)at least
该短语表示“至少”。注意该短语大多表示数量上“至少”。如：
We should brush our teeth at least twice a
day. (我们每天应
该至少刷两次牙。)
【注意】
注意该短语的反义表达为：at most，表示“最多”。如：
It will
take two hours at most to get there.
(最多两小时便可
到达那里。)
(九)at times
该短语表示“有时”，相当于sometimes。如：
Everyone may make
mistakes at times. (每个人不时都会犯
错误。)
(十)at a
loss
该短语表示“不知所措”。如：
Many people are at
a loss as to what to do in case of a real
fire. (一旦真的发生火灾，许多人就不知所措，不知道该干什么好了。)
二、更多常用短语
(十一)at all
该短语一般都采用否定表达，即：notno...at all，表示“根本
不”。如：
She does not care about her husband at all. (
她根本不关心
她的丈夫。)
I assure you that you will
feel no pain at all. (我保证你根本
不会觉得疼的。)
(十二)at stake
该短语表示“在危险中”，相当于in danger或at
risk。如：
This decision puts our lives at
stake. (这么一决定,我们的生命
就吉凶难卜了。)
(十三)at large
该短语表示“详细地;在逃的”。如：
详细地：The question is
discussed at large in my report.
(我
在报告中对该问题作了详细的探讨。)
在逃的：The escaped
criminal is still at large. ( 逃走的罪犯
仍逍遥法外。)
(十四)at hand
该短语表示“在手边;即将到来”。如：
在手边：He couldn't bend his mind to the work at hand.
(他
安不下心来处理手头的工作。)
即将到来：He believes that
the great day is at hand. (他相
信这个伟大的日子就要到来。)
(十五)at one time
该短语表示“曾经;同时”。如：
曾经：He was at one time so devoted to piano playing.

该短语表示“充其量”。如：
