Most people know that in the past, Chinese women had no right to receive formal education.
2

But this doesn’t mean they made on efforts to learn. One piece of evidence is Nüshu --- a written
language used especially by women.
A Nüshu museum opened on Puwei Island, Jiangyang county, Hunan province in May 2007.
This beautiful island was home to many famous Nüshu authors. This year, according to Xinhua,
many tourists visited the museum to appreciate the unique culture of Nüshu.
Centuries ago, Nüshu was taught to girls by elderly women in their homes. During village
gatherings, women would use the characters to write poems. This way, they expressed the
emotions they usually kept hidden from men.
Worried that this ancient culture will soon disappear, Zhao Liming, a professor at Tsinghua
University, started a project in 2017 with the hope of keeping Nüshu alive. One of the project’s
biggest achievements is an app designed to teach Nüshu to more people.
Many old poems written in Nüshu were created by women who wanted to express the
difficulties they faced, and how they make it through those hardships. “The words were full of
encouragement and positive energy, and showed an uncommon open-mindedness among women
at the time,’ Zhao said.
Ji Xianlin, the late linguist (语言学家), once wrote that Nüshu is a feminist (男女平等主义
者) symbol, since “it was created by talented women who were deprived(剥夺) of the right to
education.” This might be why this ancient culture still has significance in modern times.
“After public education was established and women got the right to attend school, Nüshu lost
its functionality (功能),” Zhao said. “However, feminist ideas are getting more popular today.”
21. According to the article, what can be learned about Nüshu?
A. It recorded how ancient women took care of their family.
B. It was the textbook ancient women learned at school.
C. It was a written language used only by women.
D. It was written by men for women.
22. In Zhao Liming’s opinion, Nüshu shows that women are _____.
A. determined and open-minded
B. kindhearted and hardworking
C. independent and realistic
D. peaceful and thoughtful
23. What does Ji Xianlin think of Nüshu?
A. It has lost its functionality today.
B. It shows women’s fight for equal rights.
C. It should become part of the school course.
D. It has helped to record many important historical events.

B
It happens every spring. Flowers suddenly burst out everywhere on the same day. But how
exactly do plants “know” when to flower?
It is a question that has puzzled biologists for years. But according to Science Daily, a US
research group may have finally answered it--- the secret lies in a protein called FKF1 which
allows plants to sense the differences in day lengths so that they can tell the seasons are changing.
They found that the protein can be activated (激活) by sunlight.
Plants produce this protein every day in the late afternoon throughout the year. If there is no
3

light at this time, for example, in winter when the sun goes down early, the protein won’t be
activated. But when spring comes and the days get longer, the protein can be activated by
day-light and the plants “know” it is time to flower.
Although researchers have only studied how the FKF1 protein works in some experimental
plants, they believe it is similar in many other plants, including crops like rice and wheat. This
could be useful to the agricultural industry.
“If we can control the timing of flowering, we might be able to increase crop production by
speeding or delaying this,’ said Takato Imaizumi, assistant professor at the University of
Washington and leader of the study. “Also, if we could control the timing of flowering in
horticultural (园艺的) plants, they may be worth more commercially (商业上)”
New technology based on this research might also lead to higher production of biofuel (生物
燃料) plants. This would be helpful for providing energy.
24. How do plants know when to flower?
A. They receive messages from other plants.
B. A certain protein tells them the time to flower.
C. They are genetically (基因遗传上) timed to flower.
D. Sunlight produces a certain protein in them to help them flower.
25. What can we learn from the article?
A. We are getting closer to controlling plant flowering times.
B. Plants are more sensitive to cold weather and shorter days.
C. When there is no sunlight, the FKF1 protein won’t be produced.
D. Researchers have studied how the FKF1 works in rice and wheat.
26. The study mentioned in the article may help us understand how to ____.
A. increase the number of species of horticultural plants
B. increase production in the agricultural industry
C. have plants that flower all year round
D. produce more chemical energy

C
In the past year I lost two of the people I loved most. One was my little sister, the other a best
friend of 30 years. I miss them. They are still in my heart, and there they’ll remain.
Sadly, when I moved to another city 8 years ago, I didn’t get to see them as much as I wanted
to. Something always seemed to get in my way --- work, my dogs and, yes, the money to fly up
for regular visits.
I was too late to whisper in their ears what they meant to me and to thank them for the joy
they had given me. And this is something I regret. But instead of blindly blaming myself, I’d
rather learn from this hardest of lessons.
I’ve resolved to put those I love before everything from now on --- to make keeping in touch
a priority (优先) and to enjoy time with them while they are here.
In fact, I have decided I am going to take something positive from their loss and enjoy
everything more. To not put anything off I can do straight away. To enjoy everything I own. Why?
It’s as John Lennon said, “life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.”
After the funerals (葬礼) of my darlings, I watched as their families dealt with what to do
with their possessions. It reminded me of sorting out my mother’s things after her death and the
4

sadness that brought me.
I’ve given up trying to “get ahead” in life; now my priority is myself and the people and
things that make me happy.
And so, this week I will go to Italy to watch my favorite show --- a joyous event that I won’t
be able to enjoy “some day in the future”. And all those pretty dresses I don’t wear because they
cost too much to clean will be worn.
And I am going to remind those I love that this is the case, not just in writing but face to face
and as often as I can. Because leaving anything for later is taking the risk that later may never
arrive.
27. How did the author feel when those she loved passed away?
A. Fearful B. Hopeless C. Puzzled D. Regretful
28. What lesson did the author learn from the death of her loved ones?
A. Life is too short.
B. It is painful to lose those we love.
C. We should value the moment with loved ones.
D. We should be prepared for something bad in life.
29. What does the underlined word “resolved” probably mean?
A. planned B. agreed C. expected D. decided
30. What can we learn about the author from the article?
A. She finds it difficult to make a living.
B. She doesn’t have many good friends.
C. She can deal with bad things positively.
D. She always cares about her family and friends.

第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

Riding a Mobike on the street, you might hear people speaking Chinese aloud. 31
After walking into a store, it’s possible that you’ll see Huawei-smartphones for sale.
This isn’t referring to China, but Manchester, UK. 32 Indeed, Chinese products have
gone global.
33 But to meet local people’s tastes, Chinese restaurants have made some changes to
the dishes.
“One example is the meat,” said Yin Hang, who is studying at the University of Wollongong
in Australia.
“We like to eat meat with the bone in, but people here don’t. So Chinese restaurants provide
big pieces of meat without bones, even for fish.”
34 In many cities in Europe, stores sell TCL televisions, Haier fridges and Lenovo
computers, reported Reuters.
More than half of US-owned drones(无人机) are Chinese models, according to China Daily.
They’re not simply made in China, but designed and developed in the country.
In the past, most Western people thought Chinese products were cheap and unreliable. But
things have changed greatly. 35
For example, Huawei, one of China’s major smartphone makers, overtook Apple in global
5

smartphone sales for the first time in June last year, noted consulting(咨询) firm Counterpoint
Research.
“They are beautiful and offer some unique features American phones don’t have,” CNN once
said about Chinese smartphones.
A. Many Chinese brands are also becoming more popular.
B. What is the biggest problem with many Chinese brands?
C. In fact, you might see similar things in many other cities around the world.
D. Turning to the right, you may see a Sichuan-style restaurant.
E. Meanwhile, international brands are still enjoying great success in China.
F. “Made in China” has become cool and more people trust Chinese brands.
G. Chinese food has been enjoyed in Western countries for a long time.

According to 56 new study by the WHO, about 25% of adults worldwide do not get
enough exercise. Because of this, about 1.4 billion people are 57 greater risk for 58
(dead) diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
When it comes to 59 (exercise) more, experts say that people needn’t go to the gym
every day. There are other ways to exercise. For example, we can take the stairs instead of taking
an elevator. And standing on one leg for 30 seconds each day 60 (be) also good for our
health.
The study also found that on average women are less active than men for the reason that
61 have to spend more time at home in taking care of 62 (child) and doing housework.
Countries with higher incomes showed higher rates of inactivity (静止不活动). For example,
people in the US exercise less 63 people in Nepal. This is partly because in 64

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Very few of us become fluent (流利的) in another language by studying it in high school. It’s
the same with my French learning in high school. I made an effort to keep in mind the little bit of
French I had learned in school, but it was pointless.
However, just before my 50th birthday, I signed up for French classes. After I was tested to
see which group I belonged to, I was placed at almost the lowest level.
When I looked around at my first Saturday morning class, I was struck by how many of the
students were learning French as a third, fourth, or even fifth language. While I’d always thought
of myself as a quick learner, that was no longer the case. I found that some language abilities
disappear gradually with age. I absorbed new vocabulary very slowly. What I learned one week
seemed to slip away as soon as I learned the next skill. I had to look up the same words over and
over again.
Now, after a couple of years, I can listen to the news in French and catch 90% of it on the
first try, read a novel if the language is not too difficult, and hold up my end of a conversation if it
doesn’t go too fast.
Who knows what I might still achieve?
I’ve learned so much beyond grammar and vocabulary. I’ve met people from around the
world and all walks of life (各行各业) who have the courage to learn something new.
I’ve a renewed understanding of how something can look completely different from another
way. I’ve learned that a language is not just a set of words, but a way of thinking.
Most of all, I’ve learned that it really is never too late to learn something new.
