The rate of population
growth is fastest in underdeveloped countries. In
these countries a high
birthrate is
accompanied by a lowered death rate thanks to
improved standards of public health. Ideally it
should be possible to counter(相反地) balance the
effect of a reduced death rate by an increased use
of
family planning. In practice, however,
population control is a complex matter. Throughout
history people
have determined the size of
their families according to the cultural values of
their societies.
Population control has long
been a subject of discussion among researchers.
Some have argued that
the supply of good land
is limited. In order to feed a large population,
bad land must be cultivated and the
good land
overworked. As a result, each person produces less
in a given amount of time and this means a
lower average income than could be obtained
with a smaller population. Other researchers have
argued
that a large population gives more
range for the development of facilities such as
sports, roads and
railways, which are not
likely to be built unless there is a big demand
for them. Similarly, it can be argued
that the
public costs of society will not be so heavy to
each individual if they are shared among the
members of a large population.
One of the
difficulties in putting birth control into
practice lies in the fact that official attitudes
to
population growth vary from country to
country. In underdeveloped countries where a large
population is
pressing hard upon the limits of
food, space and natural resources, it will be the
first concern of
government to place a limit
on the birthrate. In a well developed society the
problem may be more
complex. A declining
birthrate may lead to unemployment because it
results in a decreasing market. Cities
with a
declining population may have to face the prospect
of a decreasing tax base and a fall in land
values. If there are fewer children going to
school, teachers may be thrown out of work. When
the
pressure of population on housing
declines, prices also decline and the building
industry is weakened.
Faced with
considerations such as these, the government of a
developed country may well prefer to see a
slowly increasing population, rather than one
that is stable or in decline.

Preschools are usually
regarded as a fun learning experience where
children can pick up their basic
learning
skills, which help them to be better, prepared for
the legal education ahead. A preschool is also
known as kindergarten or nursery school, which
provides basic learning skills for children
between the
ages of two to five.
Preschools focus on getting the children to
communicate better with other children as well as
adults
around them. Preschool-education also
focuses on encouraging children’s creativity and
encouraging them
to express their thoughts and
ideas through speaking and drawing as well.
Preschools also usually include
simple
exercises and outdoor games to make sure of the
physical fitness of the children. Preschools also
help develop children’s basic mathematical
skills. In a word, the goals of preschool-
education can be
summarized
(
总结
)
as one point — to develop a child’s overall
growth.
To make the education both creative
and fun, preschools can organize many preschool
games and
activities. For example, educational
visits to the zoo or other places are an excellent
way for children to
learn about different
types of animals and other
extracurricular
(

) knowledge. Making children
exposed to educational computer games in
proper levels can be a great way to improve the
children’s
hand-eye
coordination
(协调)
and introduce the children to the
technology. What’s more, drawing can
also help
in developing the children’s
aesthetic
(
审美
) sense, and it is also a creative
way of expression for
the preschoolers.
Kids would love music and you can sing a few
well-known songs in class. Teach particular
actions
like a few claps or shouts with the
song. These body actions will help them to develop
their powers of
observation and memory skills.
Besides this, there are several other outdoor
and indoor games for preschoolers. The important
rule to
remember while designing a preschool
activity is to keep a good balance between
educational importance
or learning value and
entertainment. Preschoolers need activities that
make the process of learning
interesting.

Shared habits of happy
people
Happy people all share happy habits.
It’s as simple as that. The happiest people I know
share these
obvious habits. If you’re looking
to expand your general happiness, you may consider
adopting these in
your own life.
People
may take an active role in their local city
council, join a social club supporting causes they
believe
in, or find passion in their careers.
In each case, the physiological outcome is the
same. They engage in
something they strongly
believe in. This engagement brings happiness and
meaning into their lives.
A happy life is a
life shared with friends and family. The stronger
the personal relationships are and the
higher
the frequency of interaction is, the happier a
person will be.
Quite often people concentrate
too much on negative outcomes and leave no time to
reflect positively on
their successes. It’s
natural for a person to want to correct
undesirable circumstances and focus closely on
doing so, but it is important to reflect
mindfully on the good while striving diligently to
correct the bad. A
continuous general
awareness of your daily successes can have a
noticeably positive effect on your overall
emotional happiness.
The power of endings
is quite remarkable. The end of any experience has
a great impact on a person’s
overall
perception(看法) of the experience as a whole. Think
about reading a well-written novel. Now
imagine the ending is really poor. Even if the
story was appealing until the ending, would you
still be
happy recommending the novel to a
friend? People always remember the ending. If the
ending is happy,
the experience creates
happiness. Always tie loose ends, leave things on
a good note, and create happy
endings in your
life whenever possible.
Everyone possesses
unique personal strengths. We all have different
talents and skill sets. Emotional
happiness
comes naturally to those who use their strengths
to get things done. The state of completion
always creates a sense of achievement. If the
achievement is based on your own personal ability
to get
the job done, the physiological rewards
are priceless.
The best things in life are
free. They come in the form of simple pleasures
and they appear right in front of
you at
previous locations and arbitrary times. They are
governed by Mother Nature and situational
circumstances and captured by mindful
awareness. It’s all about taking a moment to
notice the orange
and pink sunset reflecting
off the pond water as you hold hands with someone
you love. Noticing these
moments and taking
part in them regularly will bring unplanned bursts
of happiness into your life.

Whenever we meet with
difficulty or fail, teachers, parents or others
often say to us or perhaps we say to
ourselves, “Never give up.” These can be
encouraging words and words of determination. A
person who
believes in himself will keep
trying to reach his goal no matter how many times
he fails. In my opinion, the
quality of
determination to succeed is an important one to
have. Therefore, I believe that we should never
give up.
One reason is that if we give up
too easily, we will rarely achieve anything. It is
not unusual for us to fail in
our first
attempt at something new, so we should not feel
disappointed and should try again. Besides, if
we always give up when we fail, we will not be
able to develop new skills and grow as people.
Another
reason we should never give up is that
we can learn from our mistakes so that we cannot
make the same
mistakes. If we do not try
again, the lesson we have learned is wasted.
Finally, we should never give up
because as we
work to reach our goals, we develop confidence,
and this confidence can help us succeed
in
other areas of our lives. If we never challenge
ourselves, we will begin to doubt our abilities.
In short, it is important that we do not give
up when working for our goals. Whether we succeed
in the
end or not, we will learn something,
and what we learn will help us to become better,
more confident
people. Furthermore, if we give
up, we have no chance of attaining our goals any
more, but if we keep
making great efforts,
there is always a chance that we will succeed one
day.

The number of young
Internet addicts had grown to 24 million by 2009,
almost double the figure for 2019,

as the nation’s Internet population
continues to rise, a survey shows. The addicts
accounted for one in
seven young Internet
users, according to the survey.
“The survey
results highlight the worrying situation of the
ever-growing number of young Internet
addicts,” Hao Xianghong, secretary-general of
the China Youth Association for Network
Development
(CYAND), said yesterday at a press
conference to release the results.
The
findings come against the background of an
increasing number of children and young adults
receiving
controversial re-education or
treatment to fight Internet addiction at
rehabilitation (康复)schools,
camps and clinics
dotted across the country.
Last year,
governments at all levels sprung into action,
closing down cyber cafes and announcing plans to
install filtering software on every computer.
The nation’s Internet population, already the
world’s largest, rose nearly 30 percent in 2009 to
384 million,
of which one in three was younger
than 19, according to the China Internet Network
Information Center.
The new survey of more
than 7,000 people aged 6 to 29 in 30 provinces,
municipalities and autonomous
regions was
conducted from last September to January. It has
been conducted every two years since 2019
by
CYAND.
As many as 15.6 percent of netizens
aged 18 to 23 were Internet addicts, accounting
for the largest
percentage compared with other
age groups, while 8.8 percent of Internet users
aged 6 to 12 were web
addicts, the lowest
percentage, according to the survey.
“Compared
with 2019, the number of Internet addicts aged 18
to 23 has increased, while addicts in the
6-12
age group have decreased. It shows that the years
of efforts by the authorities to prevent children
from getting hooked are effective,” Hao said,
“But it also shows us that more needs to be done
for helping
addicts aged 18 to 23, who are
mainly students,” he said.
Although there is
no universal standard on Internet addiction, web
users are defined as Internet addicts if
school grades, careers or interpersonal
relationships in real life are affected by overuse
of the Internet,
according to Ke Huixin,
director and professor of the survey and
statistics institute of Communication
University of China, who also headed the
survey.
Those defined as addicts should also
meet at least one of three requirements: He or she
always wants to
use the Internet; feels
annoyed or depressed if denied Internet use; or
feels happier in the cyber, rather
than the
real world.
“As one of the few nationwide
surveys, it is expected to comprehensively reflect
the true picture of
Internet addiction among
Chinese youths,” said Ke.

In the professional world,
oral communication skills in the workplace, which

important for the success of any
organizations.
The 21st century has been
considered to be an era of communication. The way
we convey our

in building relationships. In the workplace, there
are employees of diverse
cultural and
educational backgrounds. This makes team working

Misunderstandings,

With proper communication, a close

cooperation is promoted by
properly conveying
expectations of the management team to the
employees and vice – versa (相反的情

developing oral communication skills is important
to success in life ahead.
How to improve oral
communication? In the business world, individuals
are expected to be confident
about their
beliefs and ideas. Therefore, they must include
words like “in my opinion”, “as far as I know”.
While improving skills on oral communication,
people in a workplace must learn the art of
listening. In
addition, one must also have a
positive body language during conversations. A
person with a smiling face
and positive
attitude can raise the spirits of everyone around
him. When we’re talking to someone, we
must
give the other person an opportunity to talk as it

Make the benefits most,
reduce the drawbacks least
Hosting the
Olympics successfully is, perhaps, the greatest
glory for a city. However, before turning
第 10
页
the dream into reality, the benefits
and drawbacks of hosting the Olympics should be
considered carefully.
Hosting the Olympics
surely would bring about much gain to a city. Boom
(繁荣)of the local
economy, more jobs, and the
possibility of creating income all sound extremely
attractive to the city
government. At the same
time, better infrastructure (基础设施), cleaner
environment, enjoying the
wonderful game with
hundreds of sports elites (精英) and entertainment
stars, and the opportunity of
contacting
people from all over the world also seem exciting
to the citizens. Besides, the hosting will
definitely promote the patriotic(爱国的) emotion
and pride, as well as the moral behavior in local
people. In most cases, hosting the Olympics is
well supported by both the public and the central
government.
But this is not the entire
view of the pretty picture. If we look from
another angle, the Olympic
hosting might bring
about some side-effects to a city.
First, the
environmental impacts, including the increasing
waste smoke of cars, more pressure on
water
resources, huge amount of wasted leaflets and
other materials used for public activities, are
most
probably neglected. In order to broaden
the streets, some trees may have to be cut. Near
the
construction site, the tiny dust may float
in the air for a long time. Reduction of farmland
may be caused
by the need of setting up new
sports centre or accommodation facilities. These
environmental
consequences can be especially
serious in a resource-limited and thickly-
populated city in a third-world
country.
Second, if talking about the economic benefit, it
should not be forgotten that a quick increase
may lead to bubble (泡沫) growth, which may
easily crash. If not well managed and organized,
the big
event may not be so profitable, and
the new facilities may be forever empty after the
games. Yes, there
have been cases that host
cities ended up with enormous debts.
No one
stops eating merely because too much food might
hurt his stomach and make him ill. Since
we
have bid for it, what we can do is to make the
benefits most and reduce the drawbacks least.

drawbacks least

Team sports do kids much
good. Sometimes parents pay no attention to these
sports because they want
their kids to shine
in individual sports.
There are leaders and
there are followers. There is nothing wrong with
being a follower but it’s often
emphasized
that we should be leaders. Some kids have natural
leadership abilities and other times they
get
leadership because of their physical abilities. In
team sports, it is important for each player to
know
their position on the field. Some were
not born to be leaders, those people are not often
the stars on a
team but the stars would not be
there without the followers. Without that help,
the leader wouldn’t have
been able to score or
push forward. All of this is necessary to a team
and great for kids to learn early.
High grades
came with sports abilities. If kids don’t complete
school work in time, their parents wouldn’t
let them go to practice. This teaches
responsibility . Kids learn what the standards are
and know it is their
responsibility to reach
those standards. Also, knowing the schedule and
being on time is good practice for
college and
career. It helps develop a sense of what is to
come and it grows the confidence in the
studentathlete.
Team sports can build the
confidence needed to avoid bad images. It keeps
kids healthy and it also
promotes healthy
eating habits and lifestyle. When I was playing
team sports, I knew that I should not eat
junk
food and all of my teammates would point it out to
me if I ate around them. It was not a bad
pressure but a good one. It made me want to
better myself for the team.
All of these are
an important part of team sports. The friendships
made in activities really help with
confidence
and
confidence is sure to grow in a good team
environment.

It is said that the eyes
are the windows of our soul. Beautiful and bright
eyes not only show a good
health but also make
you look very attractive. However, to have healthy
eyes you have to look after them
properly.
Your eyes need everyday attention.
Pay more
attention to your diet. First, eat food that is
good for your eyes. They are fresh fruits and
vegetables as well as fish, eggs, and milk.
Besides, a regular amount of vitamins A and B2
should also be
taken.
A regular and sound
sleep is a must. It relaxes the eye muscles and
gives them the rest required.
Sleep not only
helps eyes but also helps the body to repair its
tired tissues . Usually, you must sleep for at
least seven to eight hours every day. Loss of
sleep can give you dark circles under the eye.
You must exercise your eyes every day. Blink
(眨眼) your eyes at regular periods, which makes the
eyeballs watery, and gives them a good wash.
We use our eyes in many unnoticeable and wrong
ways. For example, if a small thing goes into our
eye we start rubbing (揉) it, which is wrong.
Rubbing can cause damage to your eyes. Don’t read
or write
in poor or bright sunlight. Always
use sunglasses as sunlight can cause eye
tiredness. Light should not
shine directly in
your eyes. Too much reading, writing, watching
television or working on the computer
can also
cause eye tiredness.
Remember to always take
care of God’s most beautiful gift to you. Your
life will be very colorless

Life is what we make of it.
How can we make our life better? Through focus—
focusing on one thing
and getting it done.
Learning to focus can help us in many ways. It can
help us realize what we really want
in life.
It can help us make good decisions. It can also
help us accept ourselves just the way we are.
Focus
can help us gain power and happiness.
Focus, or concentration, is a skill that can
be taught, so there are some exercises you can do
to
improve your focus. Start with easy
exercises like staring at a picture on the wall
for a few minutes
without moving or talking to
anyone. Once you learn how to block out your
surroundings, your focus will
improve.
Learn to manage your pressure. Many athletes
require intense focus in their training and games.
They try to spare some time to calm themselves
down. It isn’t enough to just practice your shots
because
when game time comes, the stress and
tension can make one miss a shot. This is when
focus comes into
play.
Another mind
exercise you can do is picturing yourself in a
desired situation, and then you work
around
your picture. Actors do this a lot to block out
laughter or noise. AN example of this would be to
imagine yourself in a potentially stressful
situation, like a singer in a concert. Try to play
out the scene in
your mind what you would do
if different things are to happen. This can
actually be a lot of fun, and you
learn how to
improve your focus by concentrating on one thing
only.
If this sounds a little strange to you,
you could try another strategy. Why not make
lists? Make a list
of the things you need to
accomplish. Study your lists carefully and see
where you can move things
around. Planning
helps you focus. It will also not stress you out.
A better way to improve your focus is to take
breaks. Don’t spend it with your co-workers beside
the
coffee machine talking about problems in
the office. Doing this will actually cause your
stress and cause
you to lose focus on the
things that need to be done. Your breaks should be
as quiet as possible. Read a
book or take a
walk. Go and do something that will give your
brain a rest.
The reason why we lose focus so
easily is because we have too much on our minds.
Of course, it
could also because you are bored
with nothing to do. A good balance between a too
relaxed brain and a
too active brain is
necessary. Find your ability to work, and try not
to waste your time. Improving your
focus also
mean knowing what you can do and being confident
about doing it well.

D. R. Gaul Middle School is in
Union, Maine, a blueberry-farming town where the
summer fair finds kids
competing in pig
scrambles and pie-eating contests.
Gaul, with
about 170 seventh- and eighth-graders, has its own
history of lower level academic
achievement.
One likely reason: Education beyond the basic
requirements hasn't always been a top
priority
for families who've worked the same land for
generations. Here, few adults have college
degrees,
and outsiders (teachers included) are
often kept at a respectful distance.
Since
2019, Gaul's students have been divided into four
classes, each of them taught almost every subject
by two teachers. The goal: To find common
threads across disciplines to help students create
a big picture
that gives fresh meaning and
context to their classwork -- and sparks
motivation for learning.
Working within state
guidelines, each team makes its individual
schedules and lesson plans, incorporating
non-
textbook literature, hands-on lab work and field
trips. If students are covering the Civil War in
social
studies, they're reading The Red Badge
of Courage or some other period literature in
English class. In
science, they study the
viruses and bacteria that caused many deaths in
the war.
Team teaching isn't unusual. About 77
percent of middle schools now employ some form of
it, says John
Lounsbury, consulting editor for
the National Middle School Association. But most
schools use four- or
five-person teams, which
Gaul tried before considering two-person teams
more effective. Gaul supports
the team concept
by 跟班) so that the same two teachers stick with
the same teens
through seventh and eighth
grades. Combining teams and looping creates an
extremely strong bond
between teacher and
student. It also, says teacher Beth Ahlholm, us to
build an excellent
relationship with
parents.
Ahlholm and teammate Madelon Kelly are
fully aware how many glazed looks they see in the
classroom,
but they know 72 percent of their
eighth-graders met Maine's reading standard last
year -- double the
statewide average. Only 31
percent met the math standard, still better than
the state average (21
percent). Their students
also beat the state average in writing and
science. And in2019, Gaul was one of
47
schools in the state to see testing gains of at
least 20 percent in four of the previous five
years,

There are some very good
things about open education. This way of teaching
allows the students to
develop their own
interests in many subjects. Open education allows
students to be responsible for their
own
education. Some students do badly in traditional
classrooms. The open classroom may allow them to
enjoy learning. Some students will be happier
in an open education school. They will not have to
worry
about grades or rules.
But many
students will not do well in an open classroom.
For some students, there are too few rules.
These students will do little in school. They
will not make good use of open education. Because
open
education is so different from
traditional education, these students may have a
problem of getting used to
making so many
choices. For many students it is important to have
some rules in the classroom. They
worry about
the rules even when there are no rules. Even a few
rules will help this kind of students. The
last point about open education is that some
traditional teachers do not like it. Many teachers
do not
believe in open education. Teachers who
want to have an open classroom may have many
problems at
their school.
You now know
what open education is. Some of its good points
and bad points have been explained. You
may
have your own opinion about open education. The
writer thinks that open education is a good idea,
but only in theory. In actual fact, it may not
work very well in a real class or school. The
writer believes
that most students, but of
course not all students, want some structure in
their classes. They want and
need to have some
rules. In some cases, they must be made to study
some subjects. Many students are
pleased to
find subjects they have to study interesting. They
would not study those subjects if they did
not
have to.

Beggars are often seen
sitting by the side of a street with heads bowed
as people pass them by. Some ask
people
passing by for a small amount of money and some
just sit and wait to be given money. A few use
aggressive behaviour to earn money.
To
solve the problem of aggressive begging, an
“alternative giving ” plan has been suggested.
Ten blue
money boxes will be placed in busy
places such as the market and the railway station.
It aims to
encourage people not to give money
directly to beggars but instead to give generously
to local homeless
causes.
Supporters of
this plan think it will be an effective way to
solve the beggars’ alcohol and drug problems.
But the police oppose the plan arguing that
beggars who do not receive cash may turn to
criminality to
feed their addictions. The
homeless charity “Crisis” said the success of any
plan will depend on its style.
They think that
imaginative and positive plans can help create
local understanding and sympathy instead
of
hardness. Most of the beggars dislike the plan
because they think they will not get enough money
from
the boxes for their showers, food and
clothes.
Begging is a big social problem both
in developing and developed countries. Governments
must play a big
role in solving this problem.
Training beggars to work and helping them to find
appropriate jobs is one
option. This is
especially true for developing countries where
many low-skill jobs exist.
The general
community should also be educated to see beggars
not as dirty and dangerous, but as people
who
need understanding and help.

In the past air travel was
only for the elite- the rich, the powerful, the

millions of
people are able to travel around the world or
pleasure. However,for a long time,people have
got into an argument about whether the price
to be paid for this easier travel may be damage to
the
environment.
There are plenty of
accusations against cheap flights. Critics of
budget air travel claim that the
emissions
from jet fuel are damaging the atmosphere. This is
particularly serious at the higher levels of
the atmosphere where modern jets fly. A single
short flight from Dubai to Mumbai, for example, can
produce as much carbon dioxide as one month’s
driving for a family. In addition, the
environmental
continues when the tourists
land,as hotels, leisure and other facilities are
very significant polluters and
consume a lot
of resources. A third point of course is that this
travel is mostly “unnecessary” and people
would simply stay at home if the flights were
not so cheap.
However,the supporters of cheap
air travel,such as Ireland’s Michael O’Leary,have
their own powerful
counterclaims. They reject
the statement that modern jets contribute
significantly to global warming.
They point
out that modern jets are much quieter and much
more fuel-efficient than in the past. On the
other hand, many countries already have carbon
taxes or levies included in the price of the
airline ticket
or aviation fuel. This can
compensate for the carbon produced during the
flight.

I like finding ways to
improve my life and bring more positivity into it.
Although I’m just at the beginning
of that
journey, I’ve already found some useful ideas for
doing just that. Maybe they can help you to have
more fun, improve your relationships, your
business, your health and your life. I hope so.
Appreciating as much as you can is one of
those very simple things you can do to bring more
positivity in to your life. I have also found
appreciation to be a great way to turn an angry,
sad and
frustrated mood around to a more
positive one. Simply appreciate anywhere and
everywhere in your day:
appreciate the great
weather, and appreciate the good looking guy that
just walked past you. Appreciate
the things
you have and the things you experience. Doing this
for a minute or two always gives me
positive
encouragement and improves my outlook on the
world.
If you don’t stop comparing yourself to
others, then you’ll just create a lot of
unnecessary pain in
your life. If you pass one
person then you’ll just find another person more
successful than you. And your
brief sense of
being a winner will transform once again into
anxiety, fear, stomachaches and possibly
heart
attacks. Instead start comparing yourself to
yourself. Try to improve yourself and see how you
grow,
and become a more successful and happier
person. Focus on yourself, not the other people
around you,
no matter if they are more or less
successful. It may sound updated, but I feel it’s
both a healthier and
第 19 页
more
successful way to work and view life.
Your
emotions work backwards, too. So even if you don’t
feel positive, confident, calm or decisive
you
can act like it. And after you have done that for
a few minutes, guess what happens? You will
actually
start to feel positive, confident,
calm or decisive. If you don’t know how to act,
observe other people
around you — it may be
friends, co-workers, family or celebrities from
any time and age — who have the
quality you’d
like to have. Then imitate them. If you don’t
believe in this, then just smile — even if you
have to force yourself — for 30 seconds right
now and see how you feel after that.
Michael
Jordan once said: “I’ve missed more than 9,000
shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300
games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the
game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and
over
and over again in my life. And that is
why I succeed. ‘‘Society may have brought you up
to fear failure. But
if you can rethink
failure not as something to fear but rather useful
feedback, it can improve your life
largely. A
failure may hurt for a while but then you can
learn one or many lessons from it. And then you
try again. And again. And failure becomes less
and less frightening. All successful people have
failed many,
many times. But they know that
there are still a lot of great new people and
opportunities out there. So
they try again.
And sooner or later they have success once again.

For centuries people
dreamed of going into space. This dream began to
seem possible when high-flying
rockets were
built in the early 1900s.
In 1903 a Russian
teacher named Konstantin Tsiolkovsky figured out
how to use rockets for space
travel.His plan
was the first one in rocket science to use correct
scientific calculation.About 30 years
later, a
U.S.scientist named Robert Goddard built the first
rockets that could reach high altitudes.During
World War II, German scientists built large
rockets that could travel very far and carry
dangerous
explosives.After the war, scientists
from Germany went to the United States and the
Soviet Union to

help those
countries build space rockets.
These two
countries were soon racing to get to space
first. Each of these countries wanted to prove that
it was stronger and more advanced than the
other one. Both countries also had powerful
bombs.People
in the United States were worried
when the Soviets were first to launch a space
satellite, which was
called Sputnik.The
Soviets were also first to send a person into
space.Yury Gagarin orbited the earth in
the
Vostok I spaceship in 1961.
The US government
set a goal for its space program to be the first
country to put a person on the
Moon.The
U.S.space program built a series of Apollo
spaceship. These vehicles were powered by huge
Saturn 5 rockets. In 1969 Apollo II took three
men to the moon successfully.Nell Armstrong became
the
first person to walk on the Moon.
The
Soviets may have lost the race to fly people to
the Moon, but they built the first space station
in
1971.The United States also built a space
station. The space stations allowed people to live
and work in
space.Then the Soviet Union and
the United States cooperated to hook two
spaceships together in
space.This action ended
the .Today a much larger space station, built by
several countries
together, orbits Earth.
Another new way to go to space is by space
shuttle.A space shuttle, first made in the United
States in
1981, looks like an
airplane.Astronauts who fly spaceships have used
shuttles to help put satellites into
space.

Whenever we meet with
difficulty or failure, teachers, parents or others
often say to us or perhaps we
say to
ourselves, “Never give up.” These can be
encouraging words and words of determination. A
person
who believes in himself will keep
trying to reach his goal no matter how many times
he fails. In my
opinion , the quality of
determination to succeed is an important one to
have. Therefore, I believe that
we should
never give up.
One reason is that if we
give up too easily, we will rarely achieve
anything. It is not unusual for us to fail
in
our first attempt at something new, so we should
not feel disappointed and should try again.
Besides,
if we always give up when we fail ,
we will not be able to develop new skills and
grow.
Another reason we should never give
up is that we can learn from our mistakes so that
we can not
make the same ones. If we do not
try again, the lesson we have learned is wasted.
Finally, we should never give up because as we
work to reach our goals, we develop confidence,
and this
confidence can help us succeed in
other areas of our lives. If we never challenge
ourselves, we will begin
to doubt our
abilities.
In short, it is important that we
do not give up when working for our goals. Whether
we succeed in the
end or not , we will learn
something , and what we learn will help us to
become better and more
confident. Furthermore,
if we give up , we have no chance of attaining our
goals any more , but if we
keep making great
efforts, there is always a chance that we will
succeed one day.

Although
many Chinese students say that their knowledge of
English grammar is good, most would admit
that
their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to
Chinese students they always say, “ My spoken
English s poor”. However, their spoken English
doesn’t have to remain “poor”. I would like to
suggest
that there may be some reasons for
their problems with spoken English.
First,
they fail to find suitable words to express
themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously
the
better answer is to expand their
vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited
vocabulary, if your
attitude is positive.
Others will follow you as long as you use the
words that you know.
Second, they are afraid
of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes
when they are speaking,
because they are shy
and nervous. Yet students should remember that
their goal should be fluency not
accuracy.
Your aim in writing is to be accurate following
the rules for grammar and using tenses to get
your message across. But to talk to someone in
English, as quickly and well as you can, even
though
sometimes you may use a wrong word of
tense, but it doesn’t matter because the person
you are
speaking to will understand you.
The third reason is that not enough attention
is paid to listening. you have one mouth but two
ears! All
that hearing is necessary for you to
start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students
are reactive rather than pro-active language
learners. Instead of actively
seeking out
opportunities to improve their spoken English,
they passively wait for speaking opportunities
to come to them and wonder why their English
always remains poor. If you have this pro-active
outlook,
then, you will see English
opportunities wherever you go.
If you don’t
use your English beyond the classroom you will
forget that English you know. Remember USE
IT
FOR IT! You can learn how to speak English better
by speaking English more.

China, after the earthquake of
magnitude(里氏)8 that was centered on Wenchuan but
shook the entire
country.
Actually, in the
past centuries, there were hundreds of thousands
of earthquakes in different parts
of the
world. In Sept. 1923, Tokyo and Yokohama were both
destroyed by an earthquake and the fires
that
followed it. They had to be completely rebuilt.
One of the most serious earthquakes was in China’s
Shanxi Province in 1556. It claimed almost one
million people.
We measure an earthquake’s
strength on the Richter scale. The Richter scale
was introduced in 1935
in Southern California
in the USA. It measures earthquakes on a scale of
one to ten. Any earthquake
measuring five or
more is usually serious.
The earth’s crust
(地壳) is made up of layers of rock called plates.
As these plates move, they
sometimes crash
against each other, causing the crust to quake. In
cities such as Tokyo, where small
quakes
happen quite often, many modern buildings are
designed to be flexible so when the earth moves,
they move with it.
Earthquakes can also
break up gas or oil pipes. This can cause fires to
break out, which can do as
much damage as the
earthquake itself.
Another effect of the
earthquakes is tsunamis (海啸). These are huge waves
created by earthquakes
beneath the sea. They
can be many meters high and cause great damage to
costal towns and cities.
China, Japan, Russia
and the USA have the highest occurrence of
earthquakes in the world.
