You've flown halfway around the world;you've sniffed out this place that nobody in Falongland
or Thailand seems to have ever heard of;so what on earth is there to do here? You consider this
question as you sink into an old wooden beach chair that holds you above the sand.
It was a long journey from Bangkok to the time you found the bus station and got yourself
sorted out,it took almost as long as the flight from Falongland.
Huaplee is located just south of Hua Hin,about two hundred kilometres from Bangkok, down the
west side of the Gulf of many tourists find this place, and the ones that do wonder
if finding it has been their purpose all along.
There's an apparent laziness that surrounds you 's what this place offers, and it's free
of small waves that tap the shoreline seem to slow everything settle into
your beach chair in preparation for a long sit there and watch the sea.
It's early afternoon,so the cook comes out and asks what you'd like to eat this
long he's rushed off to the market to buy the ingredients for whatever it was that you ordered
-every meal fresh and to menu here.
There is no poolside noise here but just that wonderfully warm, clear blue 's no street
only sounds are the murmurs of nature.
For now you just count your blessings (福祉),listing them in the sand with your toe (脚趾).You
don't have to worry about being late for don't have to do anything.
The beach to your right stretches off to the horizon (地平线),slowly narrowing to nothingness
only to reemerge again on your left, now steadily widening until it covers the chair beneath
to your left and sand to your right;it's unbroken, start,no end, just sand,
sun,and off it,and you reenter the world of traffic, stress, work, and hurry.
Normally you're the type who can't sit still for more than ten minutes, but you're on Huaplee
Lazy Beach now and,in the right frame of mind,it stretches all the way around the world.
“How could it take me so long to find it?”you wonder.

【2014调研考试】
I was parked in front of the mall wiping off my car.I had just come from the car wash and was
waiting for my wife to get out of work.

2

Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider a bum. From the looks
of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no money. There are times when you feel generous
but there are other times that you just don't want to be bothered. This was one of those “don't
want to be bothered times”.
“ I hope he doesn't ask me for any money,” I thought.
He didn't.He came and sat on the edge of the pavement in front of the bus stop but he didn't
look like he could have enough money to even ride the bus. After a few minutes he spoke.
“That's a very pretty car,” he said.
He was in rags but he had an air of dignity around him.His badly- grown blond beard kept more
than his face warm.
I said, “thanks,” and continued wiping off my car.He sat there quietly as I worked. The expected
plea(乞求) for money never came.As the silence between us widened, something inside said, “ask
him if he needs any help.” I was sure that he would say “yes” but I held true to the inner voice.
“Do you need any help?” I asked.
He answered in three simple words that I shall never forget. We often look for wisdom in great
men and women. We expect it from those of higher learning and achievements.I expected nothing but
an outstretched dirty hand.He spoke the three words that shook me.
“Don't we all?” he said.
56. Why did the writer parked his car before the mall?
A. Because he wanted to pick up his wife.
B. Because he wanted to show off his car.
C. Because he wanted to wipe off his car.
D. Because he wanted to do some shopping.
57. Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word
A. dustman B. driver C. beggar D. robber
58. Which is the best title for this text?
A. A good husband
C. Don't we all?
【参考答案】56-58 ACC

3
B. Didn't he need help?
D. One should be generous

【2014调研考试】
The parents of a troubled teen may feel unsure as to whom to turn to in order to find help for
their child. They may feel as if they have exhausted all of their options, and sometimes they are
on the verge of giving up. But there is hope. Schools for troubled teens offer discipline and in
some cases, drug treatment programs that can provide important life skills, and more importantly,
a fresh start.
The following is a list of the most effective types of schools for troubled teens. Not every
facility is a match for every child, but by knowing the differences between them, parents can make
a better educated decision about where to send their teenager.
Boarding Schools
When a child is unable to deal with the relative freedom of a standard school day, boarding
schools might be a good choice. At boarding schools, the child lives in a dorm setting, where almost
every minute of the day is scheduled by school administrators.
Treatment Centers
When a teenager has an addiction to drugs or alcohol, a residential center that specializes
in young people is an outstanding way to help them break the cycle of addiction. Treatment centers
feature individual and group counseling to help identify the root causes of the drug problem and
help develop the life skills needed to stay clean when the program is over.
Wilderness Programs
Designed to help improve the discipline and self-reliance of the child, wilderness programs
send kids back to nature. By placing them in a foreign and sometimes uncomfortable setting,
wilderness programs hope to improve children’s behavior. Programs generally include hikes,
exercise programs and team building exercises.
Boot Camps
Boot camps are the most extreme style of school for troubled teens. These facilities are modeled
after actual military boot camps, where the individual must get into shape, work as part of a team,
and follow a long, hard set of rules and regulations. However, boot camps might not be the best
choice for a teen with a drug addiction.
59. Who would be the intended readers of the passage?

4

A. Teachers. B. Parents.
D. Experts.
C. Students.
60. As the author suggests, schools for troubled teens______.
A. can be a good choice for some desperate parents
B. can completely help and change troubled teens
C. are becoming popular with teens in trouble
D. care more about discipline than life skills
61. According to the passage, boarding schools_____.
A. provide children with more freedom
B. have their students’ time managed carefully
C. pay much attention to team building exercises
D. can make children feel safer
62. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce schools for troubled teens.
B. To show some problems of troubled teens.

D. To remind parents to care for their children.

【2013界广东省三模】----A
Dutch treat is a late- nineteenth-century term, and it originally refers to a dinner where everyone
is expected to pay for his own share of the food and drink. If people go “Dutch treat”, or simply
“go Dutch”, it means that they will share the expenses of a social engagement.
There are many other “Dutch” expressions in English, many of which were invented in Britain
in the seventeenth century, when the Dutch and the English were commercial and military rivals.
The British used “Dutch” to refer to something bad, cheap and shameful. A “Dutch bargain”
at that time was an uneven, one-sided deal; “Dutch reckoning” was an unitemized account; and
“Dutch widow” was slang for prostitute. Later centuries brought in “Dutch courage”, for bravery
induced by drink; “Dutch concert”, for discordant music; “Dutch nightingale”, meaning a frog;

5

and “double Dutch”, for incomprehensible language, or unintelligible talk.
Some of the expressions are still in use today, but some are not. In fact, in American English,
some “Dutch” expressions have nothing to do with the Dutch, but something with the German. It
was probably because of the similar spelling and pronunciation that people made a mistake in
distinguishing between “Dutch” and “Deutsch” (the German word for German), when German
immigrants came to America in the 1700s. For instance, “the Pennsylvania Dutch” refers to the
German descendants, instead of the Dutch descendants, living in Pennsylvania.
56. Many of the “Dutch” expressions were invented with derogatory (贬义) sense, because .
A. The Dutch were underdeveloped people.
B .Britain and Holland were competitors at that time.
C. The Dutch had many bad habits.
D. The British were superior to the Dutch.

【答案】C
【解析】句意猜测题。根据The British used “Dutch” to refer to something bad and shameful.因
为Dutch指的是不好可耻的事 情,所以这句应该理解为“你有麻烦了”,故选C。

instead of the Dutch, simply because .
A. People hated the German as much as the Dutch.
made a mistake at the beginning.
made a joke about the German.
German immigrants proclaimed that they were Dutch.
【答案】B
