Model
Railroading
Would you like to know a fun way
to learn about math? Well, you can do that with
model
railroading. You can learn about many
school topics without using a school book. Besides
that,
there are many other benefits to model
railroading as well. In this article, we will
discuss just a
few of the many benefits of
model railroading.
Patience and problem
solving skills: When you build a model railroad,
you have to plan
your railroad out. You have
to decide where the tracks will go, where to put
buildings, how big the
layout will be, etc.
Also, you have to think about any problems you may
have with the design you
choose. How will you
make railroad crossings? How will you design
hills, and rivers? Deciding
on what to do with
your model railroad takes a lot of thought and
patience, but it is not as difficult
as you
may think.
Building and construction skills:
With model railroading, you learn how to put
together
plastic models of buildings. Also,
you can learn how to build a table for your
layout, or make
scenery for the geography of
your layout. Your model railroad runs on
electricity, so you learn
about electronics
and wiring as well. These skills will help you all
throughout life.
Fun for family and friends:
Unlike many video games, model railroading is a
social hobby
that lets you communicate with
family and friends. This is because you have to
communicate with
family and friends as you
build and run your model railroad. By spending
time with the people in
your life you love and
care about, you learn to become closer and care
more for each other. Of
course, the best part
about model railroading is running the trains.
Watching the very detailed
trains run around
the track and make all the sound and do all the
things that real trains do gives
people hours
of enjoyment.
I hope you can learn to enjoy
model railroading and experience all the benefits
you just read
about and many others. Happy
railroading!

When we are young, we learn that tigers and
sharks are dangerous animals. We might be
scared of them because they are big and
powerful. As we get older, however, we learn that
sometimes the most dangerous animals are also
the smallest animals. In fact, the animal that
skills
the most people every year is one that
you have probably killed yourself many times: the
mosquito.
While it may seem that all
mosquitoes are biters, this is not actually the
case. Male
mosquitoes eat plant nectar. On the
other hand, female mosquitoes feed on animal
blood. They
need this blood to live and
produce eggs. When a female mosquito bites a human
being, it
transmits a small amount of saliva
(唾液) into the blood. This saliva may or may not
contain a
deadly disease. The result of the
bite can be as minor as an itchy bump (痒的肿包) or as
serious as
death.
Because a mosquito can
bite many people in the course of its life, it can
carry disease from
one person to another very
easily. Two of the most deadly diseases carried by
mosquitoes are
malaria and yellow fever. More
than 700 million people become sick from these
diseases every
year. At least 2 million of
these people will die from these diseases.
Many scientists are working on safer and
better ways to kill mosquitoes, but so far, there
is
no sure way to protect everyone in the
world from their deadly bites. Mosquitoes have
many
natural enemies like bats, birds,
dragonflies, and certain kinds of fish. Bringing
more of these
animals into places where
mosquitoes live might help to cut down the amount
of mosquitoes in
that area. This is a natural
solution, but it does not always work very well.
Although mosquitoes may not seem as scary as
larger and more powerful animals, they are
far
more dangerous to human beings. But things are
changing. It is highly likely that one day
scientists will find a way to keep everyone
safe from mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
(1) Some people fear tigers and sharks more
than mosquitoes because they ___.
A. are big
and powerful
B. have no natural enemies
C.
are found all over the world
D. kill more
people than mosquitoes
(2) The underlined
word “minor” in Paragraph 2 probably means ____.
A. insignificant B. deadly C. frustrating
D. dangerous
(3) We can learn from the text
that ____.
A. mosquitoes attract bats
B.
birds cannot kill mosquitoes
C. female
mosquitoes bites are deadly
D. there is no
perfect solution to mosquito problems
(4)
What’s the author’s attitude towards solving the
mosquito problem?
A. Unhappy. B. Pessimistic.
C. Optimistic. D. Doubtful.

Mona doesn’t like to ask people for help. But
it is hard for her to perform daily activities on
her own. She is almost 13, yet she is no
larger than a 5-year-old. Mona has trouble keeping
her
balance and can’t walk very far. When she
uses a wheelchair, she can’t push it herself.
Fortunately, Mona has a wonderful service dog
named Sam. A service dog is a dog that has
been trained to assist someone who has a
physical problem. Sam lets Mona lean on him when
she
walks. He also pulls her wheelchair and
turns lights on and off. When Mona drops
something,
Sam picks it up. He even pulls her
socks off at night.
Sam also helps Mona with
everyday tasks at school. He carries her books
from class to class
in a special backpack. He
puts Mona’s completed assignments in her teachers’
homework trays. In
the lunchroom he throws
away her trash.
Besides making Mona less
dependent on other people, Sam helps her lead a
fuller life.
Mona’s classmates enjoy Sam’s
company. This has helped her make friends. Sam
also helps Mona
be more active. With his aid,
she raised over﹩500 in a walk match for her local
society.
Because of Sam, Mona doesn’t have to
ask people for help. Sam brings her closer to
other
kids. And he even helps her contribute
to her community.

Most students in grades K—12 attend school for
6 to 7 hours a day, 180 days per year. Some
schools offer extended learning by adding
extra time to the school day or increasing the
length of
the school year. Some states are
moving to this type of schedule in an attempt to
increase student
achievement. Is it
worthwhile?
Longer days allow for more
instruction in class, individualized attention and
additional
tutoring time for struggling
students. Schools that switched to longer days
reported significant
gains in language, arts,
math and science. However, the additional time
must be accompanied by
quality instruction to
have some help.
Longer school days also have
positive results for teachers, allowing for more
communication
with colleagues, planning time
and opportunities for on-campus professional
development. Some
districts that use extended
time have raised salaries and increased benefits
to compensate teachers
for the extra hours.
Longer days can also help close the
achievement gap between socioeconomic groups.
Families who can afford it often help their
children’s education with additional classes and
tutoring. With longer days, children from
less-wealthy families would have these same
opportunities. Students in schools with
extended days average seven hours of instruction
in art,
music and physical education, which is
double the national average.
Advocates of
longer days argue that American students spend
less time in school than those
in other
nations and are consequently left behind. In fact,
American students attend school for 900
to 1,
000 hours per year. Finland, which consistently
performs well on standardized tests, averages
608 hours of instruction at the elementary
level per year.
Additional time in school
means more energy costs, higher salaries and more
resources.
While adding time appears to have
positive effects, it comes at a cost that some
schools cannot
afford. Adding time to the
school day increases school budgets an additional
6 to 20 percent more
per year. The question
that schools must answer is whether the additional
instruction and
enrichment time is worth the
additional costs.
(1) Some schools in the U.S.
add extra time to the school day or school year to
____.
A. demand larger school budgets B.
improve students’ academic performance
C. help
better take care of young students in need D. make
more money out of the students in need
(2) As
a result of extended school days, ____.
A.
teachers have fewer opportunities to interact
B. quality instruction has become hardly
accessible
C. teachers in related schools can
benefit financially
D. students spent 20% more
time on math than on other subjects
(3)
According to Paragraph 4, longer school days ____.
A. increase the opportunities of employment
for the poor
B. force rich families to provide
additional tutoring for their children
C. help
narrow income gaps between rich and poor in the
United States
D. benefit poor families by
providing the children with additional classes
(4) The last paragraph is mainly concerned
with ____.
A. the cost-effectiveness of
extending school days
B. the urgent need to
add time to the school day
C. schools’ attempt
to cut down their budgets D. the benefit of
additional time in school
