The Mexican
Rivera was determined
to help his people at the cost of his life. He
fought against stronger and tougher boxers in the
ring
to make money for his people. He often
lost at the beginning, but he grew more
experienced.
One day he was engaged in a very
tough fight against a champion boxer, Danny.
Rivera didn't match Danny in height,
weight,
or skills. And he was not half as popular.
However,
he had on his mind was making the
money for his people.
The fight was going on
and on. The whole stadium was cheering for Danny;
there were very few on Rivera's side.
However,
Rivera survived one blow after another; his
excellent defence was frightening.
Danny
rushed, forcing Rivera to give him a clinch. Was
it a trick? Rivera thought to himself.
Yes, it
was. But Rivera was smart enough to avoid it. He
backed and circled away.
He pretended to
clinch with Danny's next rush. Instead, at the
last instant, just as their bodies should have
come together,
Rivera went quickly back. He
had fooled him!
While Rivera was dancing away,
Danny kept challenging him openly. Having run
after him for two rounds, Danny found
the boy
not even daring to come near him. He started to
throw all caution to the winds. Rivera was struck
again and again. He
took blows by the dozen —
just to avoid the deadly clinch.
In the
seventeenth round, Rivera, blown heavily, bent
down. His hands dropped helplessly. Danny thought
it was his
chance — the boy was at his mercy.
He decided to strike the deadly blow. But before
he could do that, Rivera caught him off his
guard and hit him in the mouth. Danny went
down. When he rose, Rivera gave him another blow
on the neck and jaw. He
repeated this three
times.
Danny did not rise again. The audience
shouted for him to stand up. But the miracle did
not happen.
his corner.
Unwillingly, the referee caught his gloved
hand and held it high up.
Rivera, unattended,
walked to his corner, where his assistants had not
yet placed his stool. He didn't care. All he could
remember was that he had got the $$5,000
he needed.

In
some countries where racial prejudice(种族歧视) is
acute(严重) , violence has been taken for granted as
a means of
solving differences; and this is
not even questioned. There are countries 1
the white man imposes his rule by brute
force;
there are countries where the black man protests
by 2 fire to cities and by looting and
pillaging. Important
people on both sides, who
would in other respects appear to be 3
men, get up and calmly argue 4
violence—as if it were a legitimate(合法的)
solution, like any other. What is really
frightening, what really fills you 5
despair, is the realization that when it comes
to the crunch (关键时刻到来的时候), we have made no actual
progress 6
We may wear collars and
ties instead of war-paint, but our instincts
remain basically unchanged. The whole of the
7
history of the human race, that tedious
documentation of violence, has taught us
absolutely nothing. We have still not learnt that
violence never 8 a problem but makes
it more acute. The sheer horror, the bloodshed and
the suffering 9
nothing. No solution
ever comes to light the morning after when we
dismally contemplate the smoking ruins and wonder
10 hit us.
The truly reasonable men
who know where the solutions 11 are
finding it harder and harder to get a
hearing.
They are despised, mistrusted and even persecuted
by their own 12 because they advocate such
apparently outrageous things 13 law
enforcement. If half the energy that goes into
violent acts were
14 , if our
efforts were directed at cleaning up the slums
and ghettos, at improving living-standards
and providing education and employment
15 all, we would have gone a long way to
arriving at a solution.

The Man behind Blue Jeans
Levi Strauss was
born in 1829 in Bavaria, Germany. He was the fifth
of six children. His father sold dry goods from
door to door. (Dry goods include many
different things
:
fabric, thread,
scissors, combs, buttons, yarn, etc. )
In
1845, his father died. All six children decided to
go to the United States. Two of Strauss' bothers
started a dry goods
company in New York City.
Strauss' sister Fanny and her husband started a
similar business in San Francisco. Strauss decided
to go to the southeastern part of the United
States. For eight years, he walked along the
country roads selling dry goods from
door to
door—just like his father in Bavaria.
In 1853,
Strauss decided to move to San Francisco. (At that
time, thousands of people traveled to California
to look for
gold.) On the way to California,
Strauss sold almost all of his dry goods. He had
only one thing left—some canvas.
In
California, Strauss tried to sell the canvas to
the gold miners. He said they could make tents
from the canvas. But
they weren't interested
in canvas for tents. Strauss didn't know what to
do with the canvas. Then, he had an idea. Strauss
could see that the miners needed new pants.
There were holes in their pants because the fabric
wasn't strong. He decided to
make the canvas
into pants. They called them
a heavy cotton
fabric—the same kind people wear today.
Levi
Strauss died in 1902. He never married and left
his money to his nephews. He left the world much
more—the jeans
that so many people wear.
(
) 16. _____________ isn't a kind of dry goods.
A. Thread B. Gold C. Comb D. Yarn
( ) 17.
What is canvas?
A. Tent.
B. Pants.
C.
A very strong fabric.
D. A thing which is used
to make all kinds of trousers.
( ) 18. Why
did the miners call the pants
A. Because the
pants belonged to Levi Strauss' father.
B. In
memory of Levi Strauss' father.
C. It's the
name of Levi' Strauss' nephew.
D. Because the
pants are Levi's invention.
( ) 19. Which of
the following is NOT true about Levi Strauss?
A. He was born in Germany. B. His parents had
six children.
C. He had five children. D. He
died in 1902.

The lack of
balance between birth and death rates is
particularly known in many developing countries.
This
phenomenon occurs when a large percentage
of a country's population is of childbearing age.
Even if the birth rate of people
in developing
countries reaches replacement level, that is, if
couples have only enough children to replace
themselves when
they die, for several decades
the absolute numbers of people being born still
will exceed the numbers of people dying.
The
composition of the population by age and gender is
influenced by the economy. There is a large
difference in
low-income countries between the
percentage of people of childbearing age and more
elderly adults. Once this young group
moves
beyond childbearing age, however, the population
can begin to stabilize so that births and deaths
balance (assuming
birth rates remain at or
below replacement levels). The reverse(相反) is true
in many high-income countries where birth rates
have already been low for several decades and
populations have either stabilized or in some
cases begun to decline.
How does the age of
its population affect a country?
In low-income
countries, more than a third of the population is
under age 15, compared with less than a fifth in
high-income countries. This means that a
larger portion of the low-income countries'
population is too young to work and, in
the
short run, is dependent upon those who can.
But the transition to lower population growth
rates can cause problems, too. As growth slows,
the average age of the
population rises and
eventually the proportion of elderly, nonworking
people will increase. This puts great pressure on
the
working-age population and on a country's
pension (养老金) , health care, and social security
systems. This is an issue
facing some high-
income countries today and one that may face
developing countries in the future as their
population growth
rates continue to decline.
( ) 20. The death rate, according to the
passage, should be _______________ the birth rate.
A. above B. below
C. the same D. as
different from
( ) 21. The percentage of
people of ______________ determines the birth and
death balance.
