Do you think you have what it takes to be a successful scientist?A successful scientist is
generally a good observer. He makes full 1 ofthe facts he observes. He doesn't accept
ideas which are not 2 onobvious facts, and therefore 3 toaccept authority as the
only reason for truth. He always checks ideas 4 andmakes experiments to prove them.

The rise of 5 sciencemay perhaps be considered to 6 asfar back as the
7 ofRoger Bacon, the wonderful philosopher of Oxford, who lived 8 theyears 1214
and 1292. He was probably the first in the middle ages to suggest thatwe must learn science
9 observingand experimenting on the things around us, and he himself
10 manyimportant truths.

Galileo (1564-1642), however, who lived more than 300 years later, was the greatest of several
great men in Italy, France, Germany, and England, 11 beganto show how many important
12 couldbe discovered by observation by degrees. Before Galileo, learned men believed
thatlarge bodies fell more 13 towardsthe earth than small ones, 14 Aristotlesaid
so. But Galileo, going to the 15 ofthe Leaning Tower of Pisa, let fall two
16 stonesand proved Aristotle was wrong. It was Galileo's 17 ofgoing direct to nature,
and proving our 18 andtheories by experiment, that has led to all the discoveries of
modern science.

What 19 thosepeople good scientists? From the example of Galileo, we know it clearly
that successfulscientists are those whose observations have 20 betterresults.

healthy.

The 15 and perhaps most difficult one of the advanced forgiveness of another.

At some time of our life, you may have been severely wronged or hurt by another person to

8.For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C, and
D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

Serendipity - an unexpected delight – is the word that comes to mind when describing the
seven-day hike my wife and I recently did in the wild and undeveloped northwest coast of Galicia,
Spain.

Simply 1 , anyone who is adventurous, loves traveling to Europe and is fit enough to do
10-mile hikes should seriously consider doing this hike.

Before this experience, I had never heard about On Foot Holidays programs that allow hikers to
go at their own pace, with maps and detailed hiking 2 , but without a guide or other
travelers, while still enjoying a high level of local support.

What 3 caught my attention was an announcement about On Foot Holidays' newest
hike, the Lighthouse Way, which they described as a journey along
Europe.

On Foot Holidays booked our lodging each night and 6 a taxi to take our baggage to the
next destination, so we just had to carry our daypack essentials. Each day we 7 or spoke
with the company's local expert who was available 8 emergency, but whose main
function was to keep us informed about the daily weather forecast and to make special taxi
arrangements when we decided to 9 a couple of 14-mile hikes to less than 10 miles.

The 10 of the trails and scenery made every hike a delight. One of our hikes followed a
narrow trail along a steep, rocky cliff 11 the steel- blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean that
thrash against jagged rocks hundreds of feet below us. We stopped to picnic and watch the only
living things we saw that whole day: a herd of goats above us, and a group of dolphins jumping in
the waves below. In the distance, many of mountain peaks 12 sparkling wind turbines
(涡轮机)like candles on a cake.

Silence and loneliness were the features of each day's accommodation. The only sounds we
heard were birds singing, the wind blowing through trees or the waves breaking against the
shoreline. The air was clean and the temperature brisk, with frequent 13 of cloudy, cool,
windy and rainy weather interspersed(点缀)with glorious bursts of sunshine.

There was remarkably little litter, the exception being spots along the shore where ocean
currents 14 mostly fishing items.

My wife and I realized that we are pilgrims searching for meaning, awareness and joy on our
journey through life, and our Galician hiking 15 had moved us further down that path in
ways we won't forget.

Is Helicopter Parenting Necessary?

We've all heard the dangers of helicopter parenting. Remaining too 1 in a kid's life,
especially throughout college, can lead to depression, lack of self-reliance and feelings of
entitlement.

Superficially, this wisdom is sound. But some academics and educators now say they see signs
of a troubling backlash(反冲). The concern: warnings that moms and dads should 2 “the
over parenting trap”—are discouraging parents from getting involved at all.

Yes, parents can be intrusive. 3 , there are increasing examples of parents refusing to
step up when students genuinely need their family. One mom kept 4 about her son's
signs of depression until right before he failed a semester. She did not want to “helicopter in.”

That means colleges, which have spent the past decade learning to 5 parents who get
too involved, now have a different 6 . But the solution to both is the same: devising ways
to channel moms and dads into the right kind of 7 role.

Much of this began because schools were forced to cope with a generation of students
8 with their parents like never before, thanks to smartphones. And with 9 in
education soaring, university leaders have started to view parents as investment partners. Most
of them have paid for this education for their children or gone into debt for this education. And in
some sense, they're entitled to know and be assured that colleges are 10 their children's
welfare.

Crucially, parent-outreach programs have also served as buffers(缓冲), 11 students—or
worse, their professors—the discomfort of the nagging. At the University of Maryland, for
example, the parent office has handled 12 for weekly academic- progress reports, which
do not exist in higher education. Parents just want to know they have a place to go where
someone will listen to their concerns.

But now, with some moms and dads cautious of even contacting the school in the first place,
those same programs are being used to encourage a more balanced approach, often via blogs,
email and Facebook. Parents are now advised to be a guide, while acknowledging that the
13 owns the journey. That means asking questions, listening to answers, being patient and
trusting kids to resolve their own problems. But if issues 14 , or if a student is in serious
mental or physical danger, it also means hopping in the chopper, at least for a little while. “When
you think about it, helicopters are useful tools,” says Chelsea Petree, who is launching a parent-
outreach program. “They can see things we on the 15 can't see and get to emergencies
quicker than we can. They can swoop in when needed. The key is that they go back up.”
