雷丁英语编者按：元宵节，又称 上元佳节，是旧日新年之后的第一个重要节日。“元宵”
二字意为“上元节的夜晚”，上元，含有新年第 一次月圆之夜的意思。

元宵节在英文中是这样翻译的

As the first full moon night in the new year, the fifteenth day is also called
Lantern Festival, named after the long- time tradition of appreciating lanterns.
One should not miss Yuanxiao, glutinous rice dumplings, often stuffed with
white sugar, rose petals, sesames and so on. The stuffing and round shape
symbolize sweet life and reunion.
因为是新年第一个月圆之夜，也有人称其为中国的情人节。这一天，衣着新装的男男女女纷
纷涌 到街巷上来，赏花灯、猜灯谜，因此这一天又叫灯节。元宵节必吃的美食——元宵，以
白糖、玫瑰、芝麻 等为馅，用糯米粉包成圆形，有甜甜蜜蜜、团圆美满之意。过完元宵节，
春节正式落下帷幕。

Special foods
吃元宵
Like most Chinese festivals, the Lantern Festival has its own special food, called

fillings. The dumplings are said to symbolise both the first full moon and family
unity and completeness.
汤圆还是元宵，这是一个问题。
以小编可怜的常识来讲，元宵是用面一层层滚出来的（所以叫“滚元宵”），而汤圆是包出来
的。元宵 面很硬，汤圆则比较软糯。每逢元宵节，北京非著名点心铺子“稻香村”门口就会架
起银白锃亮的元宵机 器，一个个白团子在水泥搅拌车型的漏斗里欢快跳跃，旁边站着排出了
好几个弯的长长队伍……
The lanterns
挑灯笼

The lanterns come in all shapes and sizes. Some are created in the form of
animals, insects, flowers, people or even machines or buildings. Others depict
scenes from popular stories teaching filial piety and traditional values. A
favourite subject is the zodiac animal of the year - which in 2014 will be the
horse.

Part of the lantern festival tradition involves a game to guess riddles attached to
the lanterns. In the old days the riddles were obscure literary allusions to the
Chinese classics and so were mainly the preserve of the educated classes.
元宵节传统习俗中还有猜灯谜的游戏，以前这些谜语大多出自于 模糊的文学典故和中国古典
之中。
在很多文学作品里也能看到，古时的富家小姐文人墨客聚在 一起摆龙门最爱干的就是猜谜对

The Lantern Festival is also a romantic holiday. In feudal society, young girls
were not allowed to go out freely. But on the night of the Lantern Festival, they
were allowed to view the lantern lights in groups. Sometimes couples would go
on dates strolling down the streets lit with lantern lights. Today people still
invite others to view lanterns together.
元宵节也是一个浪漫的节日。在封建社会时，年轻女孩不允许出外自由活动。但在 元宵节晚

Across China, the Lantern Festival is celebrated in many different styles. In
places near water, people put Lotus Lanterns in the river to let them flow down
stream, carrying the loss they feel for the relatives that have passed away. In
the North, as traditional customs combined with modern science and technology,
there evolved the Ice Lantern Festival. The combination of the ice and snow with
colored lights, carvings, designs, and special scenery yield a spectacular winter
paradise.

让灯顺流而下，带去自己对已逝亲人的思念。在北方，传统习俗与现代科技相结合发展 成为

festival entertainment. In Asia, it is not uncommon to see processions of
hundred-foot long dragons, lit with flashing eyes and luminous bodies,
