Conversation Topic Talk about
some weddings you have been to. What do you want
your wedding
to be like? Part A: Way to Speak
Dialogue 1 A: Hi. What are you doing? B: I’m
reading China Daily A: Why are you always reading
English newspapers? B: Well, the reason is
that it can not only enlarge my English
vocabulary, but
also help me master more
English expressions. And I have benefited a lot
from doing this. A: Gee.
I haven’t realized
that. I must follow suit. Part A: Way to Speak
Dialogue 2 A: Amanda, I’d like to subscribe to
an English newspaper. Could you give me some
advice? B: I think you’d better subscribe to
the 21st Century. As an English major student and
would-be teacher, you’ll find it quite useful
and appropriate, for the words used are not
difficult
and what’s more, many of the
contents are related to English teaching and
learning. It’s worth
reading. A: Besides that,
are there any other English newspapers that I can
read? B: You can read,
if you like, say
Shanghai Star, Shenzhen Daily and some other
English magazines. A: Thank you for
your
advice, Amanda. B: You’re welcome. Part A: Way to
Speak
Dialogue 3 A: Hi, fancy meeting you
here. B: I have been away on holiday. What are you
doing
here, boy? A: I’m going to buy an air
conditioner. This summer is blazingly hot. I
really can’t bear
it. B: According to the
weather report, the temperature will be higher
tomorrow. A: My goodness!
No wonder the press
these days has been talking about El Nino. Is it
really caused by that? B: Well,
maybe. Part A:

Dialogue 4 A: There, Mary, why
are you so addicted to cucumber? You eat it almost
daily and use
cucumber shampoo and cream every
day. B: You know the reason why? Simply because it
has
many functions. I eat it to keep my figure
slim and I use the shampoo to keep my hair bright
and
the cream to keep my skin soft and tender.
A: Really? B: Without a doubt. A: So I should
follow
your example. Look at these patterns:

Discuss The Press The press refers to newspapers
and magazines
in general. And today we’d like
to talk about American newspapers. In terms of
population,
American newspapers’daily sales
are higher than in Germany, but lower than in
Britain. In many
states of America, it is not
easy to buy any newspaper from outside that state.
There are several
reasons for that. First, the
country is so large that any single newspaper
distributed nationwide
will find it difficult
to compete against its local counterparts. Second,
the newspaper is heavy and
has to be sent by
air as quickly as possible if it doesn’t ant to be
out of date. Therefore this kind of
transport
is unavoidably expensive. For the reasons above,
most newspapers are distributed only
within a
geographically restricted market. The newspaper
competition in America is very fierce.
In
order to strengthen the competitiveness, on one
hand, many newspaper enterprises have
established syndicates. On the other, they
tend to concentrate on reporting affairs that are
of
interest to their local readers rather than
international affairs, which are not reported very
extensively. It is true that the American
people read the newspapers just for amusement, to
pass the time, to get some excitement that
their daily routines don’t provide. Thus anything
that
can case sensation, interest or attention
is written up and carried. Part D: Fun to Speak
