Part I New Words

apply v. (正式)申请;请求
You need to apply to the local authority for a grant. 你需要向地方当局申请一笔补助金。
She had applied for a number of positions. 她申请了若干职位。

application n. 申请;实际运用
For most schools, your application for admission also serves as your application for financial aid.
对于大多数学校,入学申请也可以用作经济资助申请。
This principle has no application to the present case. 这一原则与目前的案例没有关联。

appliance n. 器具(尤指家用器具)
Dish washer is one of the appliances. 洗碗机是家用电器的一种。

interview n. 面试,口试;采访,访谈
Don't be late for your job interview. 求职面试不能迟到。
The matter can't be discussed except at a personal interview. 这件事只能在面谈时讨论。

interview v. 采访
He arrived to be interviewed by a local TV station about the level of unemployment. 他来接受地
方电视台关于失业状况的采访。

interviewee n. 接受面谈者; 被接见者
interviewer n. 接见[会见, 采访]者

advertise v. 为(产品、服务或事件)做广告;做广告
We had a chance to advertise on television. 我们有机会在电视上做广告。
These products have been advertised very heavily. 这些产品已做了大量的广告。

advertisement n. 广告
If you want to sell your old sofa, why not put an advertisement in the local newspaper? 如果你想
卖掉旧沙发, 何不在本地报纸上登个广告呢?

local a. 当地的,地方的 n. 本地人(或物)
The village has an excellent local bus service. 村子里的公交汽车服务很棒。
the local post office 当地邮局
The street was full of locals and tourists. 街上都是本地人和游客。

location n. 地点,场所
It is a suitable location for a new school. 那是建一所新学校的合适地点。

suburb n. 郊区(尤指近郊住宅区)


They decided to move out to the suburbs. 他们决定搬到郊外去。

slim a. 微小的,苗条的
The girls were tall and slim. 姑娘们身材修长。
There was just a slim chance of success. 只有很渺茫的成功机会。

awkward a. 造成困难、尴尬或不便的,令人尴尬的;笨拙的, 不灵活的
One of the most awkward jobs is painting a ceiling. 最困难的工作之一就是油漆天花板。

depress v. 使沮丧

shrub n. 灌木

fume n. 烟,气
he breathed fumes of wine into her face. 他朝她脸上呼出了阵阵酒气。

perfume n. 香气,芳香;香水
The perfume of the roses filled the room. 房间里瀰漫着玫瑰花的芳香。
This kind of perfume is made in England. 这种香水产于英国。

sandy-coloured a. 沙色的,黄中带红的

moustache n. 小胡子 beard n. 络腮胡子,山羊胡

forehead n. 额头,前额

disapproval n. 不赞成,不满
Children are sensitive to disapproval and adjust their behaviour accordingly. 孩子们对批评十分

The audience showed its approval by cheering loudly. 观众高声喝彩表示赞许。

colonel n. 上校
Colonel is the military rank. 上校是军队的军衔。

Private is the lowest rank in the army. 列兵是部队中最低的军衔。

bootlace n. 靴带

undo v. 开,松开
Can you undo this knot? 你能解开这个结吗?
He bent down and undid the laces of his shoes. 他弯腰解开鞋带。

grunt v. 嘟囔着说出,咕哝着说出
He grunted as the bullet hit him. 子弹击中他时他疼得哼出声来。
She grunted some incomprehensible reply. 她咕噜着回答了些令人费解的话。

stale a. 不新鲜的;发霉的
The room smelled musty and stale. 这个房间闻起来有股发霉的陈味儿。
musty a. 有霉味的;有潮气的;陈腐的
When I read it again, the play seemed musty. 我再次阅读剧本时,觉得它没有一点新意。

cabbage n. 卷心菜

crumb n. 面包屑,糕点屑;点滴,少许
The Budget provided few crumbs of comfort. 预算案并未带来什么好处。

certificate n. 证书,合格证
a birth certificate 出生证

certificated a.具有证明文件的; 立有证据的; 业经证明的

bloodshot a. (眼睛)充血的

vital a. 极为重要的,必不可少的
it is vital that the system is regularly maintained. 这个系统有必要经常维修。

mumble v. 含糊的说
He mumbled something she didn't catch. 他叽里咕噜地说了些她听不清的话。
He always mumbles when he's embarrassed. 他感到难为情时说话就含糊不清了。

attach v. 把…给予,系,贴
I attach a copy of the memo for your information. 我附了一份备忘录供你查看。
He attached a cheque to the order form. 他在定货单上附了一张支票。

attachment n. 附属物,附件;爱慕
The vacuum cleaner has four different attachments. 吸尘器有四个不同的附件。
She has a great attachment to her sister. 她十分依恋她的姐姐。

obviously ad. 明显地,显然
We must help him, he's obviously in trouble. 我们必须帮助他,他显然是有为难的事。
He was obviously drunk. 他显然是醉了。

obvious a. 明显的,显然的
Your side has an obvious advantage. 你方具有显著的优势
There is an obvious link between unemployment and the crime rate. 失业与犯罪率之间有着明

consist v. (由…)组成,构成 compose v. 组成,构成 comprise v. 由…组成,由…构成
constitute v. 组成,构成

range v. 变动(在一定范围内);排列 n. 范围
Prices range from £6 to £10. 价钱从六英镑到十英镑不等。
Range the books by size. 把这些书按大小分类排列。
The cost is thought to be in the range of $$1-5 million a day. 人们认为每日费用为100万至500

dismay v. 使灰心,使害怕

incompetent a. 无能力的,不胜任的


He’s incompetent, he’ll have to go. 他不称职,得辞掉他。
He is incompetent at working with his hands. 他动手能力不行。

competent a. 胜任的,称职的
She spoke quite competent French. 她的法语很好。
He did a competent job. 他的工作做得相当出色。

leisure n. 闲暇,空闲 a. 空闲的
He likes leisure and hates work. 他喜欢安逸, 讨厌工作。
What would you like to do in your leisure time? 在空闲时间时,你喜欢做什么?

salary n. 薪金,薪水

plus prep. 加,加上
Two plus four is six. 二加四等于六。
This work requires intelligence plus experience. 这项工作需要才智和经验。

protest v. 抗议;异议,反对 n. 异议,反对
She wouldn't let him pay and he didn't protest too much. 她不让他付账,他也没怎么太反对。
I can't pass the matter by without a protest. 我不能对此事视而不见, 我要提出抗议。

straw n. 稻草;麦秸
It seemed as if the words were merely straw. 好像那些话只是些废话。

prospect n. 展望,前景

constitute v. 构成, 组成
Twelve months constitute a year. 12个月为一年。
In soccer, eleven players constitute a team. 英式足球的球队由十一个球员组成。

ultimate a. 最后的;最终的;终极的
What was his ultimate goal? 他的最终目标是什么?
The sun is the ultimate store of power. 太阳是能量之本。

indignity n. 侮辱;耻辱
The soldiers who were captured suffered many indignities at the hands of the enemy. 被俘的士兵
在敌人手中受尽侮辱。

dignity n. 尊严,高贵
It was beneath his dignity to shout. 叫喊是有伤他的自尊的。


Only a truly free person has human dignity. 只有真正自由的人才具有人的尊严。

be short of 缺少
It's terrible for us to be short of water. 没有水对我们来说十分可怕。

smell of带有„气味
He smells of tobacco. 他身上带有烟草味。

judging by根据…来判断
Judging by her accent, she must be from Sichuan. 听她的口音,她准是四川人。
Judging by the response of the audience, the performance was quite a success. 从观众的反应来
看,这次演出相当成功。

attach importance to重视
The old man didn't seem to attach any importance to the question. 这老人似乎一点也不重视这
个问题。
You should attach importance to what he said. 你必须重视他所说的话。

in common共有;共同的
We had all things in common in those days. 那时我们共同分享一切东西。
We have something in common. 我们有许多相同之处。

consist of由…组成
The book consists of nineteen chapters. 全书共分19章。

in turn 依次,轮流
His policy was to beat each enemy in turn. 他的方针是各个击破。


compose, consist of, comprise, constitute这组动词的一般含义为“组成”或“构成”。

compose 不用于被动,在用于主动语态时,一般它所表示的“构成”或“组成”总包含着
融合为一,而且主语或者是复数名词或者是集体名词。
Cement, sand and gravel mixed with water compose concrete.
混凝土由水泥、砂、石子与水掺和而构成。
England, Scotland and Wales composeconstitute the island of Great Britain.
英格兰、苏格兰和威尔士构成大不列颠岛。
Mere facts, badly stated, do not compose a good book.
仅仅有资料,如果陈述得很糟糕,并不能组成一本好书。

consist动词本身不单独使用,常用consist of 表示“由…构成或组成”,在句子中与compose
的主语及宾语正好相反
Though the dress consists only of a sheet, it was very effective.
虽然那件衣服仅由一条床单组成,但效果很好。



comprise 在表示“构成”时,其内涵是“包括”或“覆盖”
These houses do not comprise all his property.
这些房产并没有构成他的全部财产。
The committee comprises men of widely different views.
这个委员会由见解甚为悬殊的人组成。

constitute 的主语可以是复数 名词也可以是单数名词,所“构成”的事物在属性和特征上,
亦或在组织上,与组成成分是一致的

This growing poverty in the midst of growing poverty constitutes a permanent menace to peace.
在这种不断增长的贫困中正在增长着的贫困,构成了对和平的永久的威胁。
Seven days constitutes a week.
七天构成一个星期。
