Directions: There are 4 passages in this part.
Each passage is followed by
some questions or
unfinished statements. For each of them there are
four choices marked
A), B), C) and D). You
should decide on the best choice on the Answer
Sheet.
Passage
1
Trees are useful to man in three very
important ways: they provide him with wood
and
other products; they give him shade; and they help
to prevent droughts (干旱) and
floods.
Unfortunately, man has not realized that the
third of these services is the most
important.
Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country
cut down its trees to build
warship,with which
to gain itself an empire(帝国). It gained the
empire, but, without its
trees, its soil
became hard and poor. When the empire fell to
pieces, the home country
found itself faced by
flood and starvation(饥饿,饿死). Even though a
government
realizes the importance of a
plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it
to persuade
villagers to see this. The
villagers want wood to cook their food with; and
they can earn
money by selling wood.
They
are usually too lazy to plant and look after the
trees. So, unless the government
has a good
system of control, or can educate the people, the
forests will slowly disappear.
This does not
only mean that the villagers' children and
grandchildren will have fewer
trees. The
results are even more serious, for where there are
trees their roots break the soil
up allowing
the rain to sink in and also bind the soil, thus
preventing its being washed
away easily but
where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard
ground and flows away
from the surface,
causing flood.
31. What is the most important
function of trees?
A. Providing fuel.
B. Offering shade.
C. Preventing natural
disaster. D. Providing wood.
32. What
eventually happened to the empire in the
paragraph?
A. Its people died of hunger.
B. It fell to pieces.
C. It became a giant
empire. D. It built many ships with wood.
33. It is implied in the passage that the
villagers__________
A. want a plentiful supply
of trees. B. want firewood badly.
C. just
want to get money. D. don’t realize the
importance of trees.
34. The role of trees is
to__________
A. loosen soil B. keep soil in
position C. harden soil D. both A and B
35. What is the passage mainly concerned with?
A. The benefits of trees. B. Trees and
soil protection
C. The various uses of trees.
D. Different attitudes toward trees.
Passage 2
Scientists find that hard-
working people live longer than average men and
women.
Career women are healthier than
housewives. Evidence shows that the job-less are
in
poorer health than jobholders. Why is work
good for health? It is because work keeps
people busy away from loneliness. Researches
show that people feel unhappy, worried
and
lonely when they have nothing to do. Instead, the
happiest are those who are busy.
Many high
achievers who love their careers feel that they
are happiest when they are
working hard.
Work serves as a bridge between man and
reality. By work people come into with each
other. By collective activity they find
friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health.
The loss of work means the loss of everything.
It affects man spiritually and makes him
ill.
Besides, work gives one a sense of
fulfillment(满足感) and a sense of
achievement
(成就感). Work makes one feel his
value and status in society. When a writer
finishes
his writing or a doctor successfully
operates on a patient or a teacher sees his
students
grow, they are happy beyond words.
From the above we can come to the
conclusion that the more you work the happier
and healthier you will be. Let us work hard
and study and live a happy and healthy life.
36. The underlined word “average” in Paragraph
1 means ______.
A. healthy B. lazy
C. ordinary D. poor
37. The reason
why housewives are not as healthy as career women
is that _____.
A. housewives are poorer
than career women
B. housewives have more
children than career women
C. housewives
have less chance to communicate with others
D. housewives eat less food than career women
38. Which of the following statements is TRUE
according to Paragraph 2?
A. Busy people
have nothing to do at home.
B. High
achievers don’t care about their families.
C. There is no friendship and warmth at home.
D. A satisfying job helps to keep one healthy.
39. We can infer from the passage that those
who do not work _____.
A. are likely to
live a shorter life B. will lose everything
at home
C. can live as long as those who
work D. have more time to make new friends
40. The best title for this passage may be
_____.
A. People Should Find a Job
B.
Working Hard Is Good for Health

Passage 3
I’m Jeffrey Bezos. When I first had the idea
of selling books on the Internet, I went
to my
boss and said to him, “You know, I’m going to
start this company selling books
online.” This
was something that I had already been talking to
him about, but then he
said, “Let’s go on a
walk.” And we went on a two-hour walk in Central
Park in New York
City.
After walking for
a while, he said, “You know, this sounds like a
really good idea to
me, but it might be a
better idea for somebody who didn’t have a good
job.” He let me
think about it for 48 hours
before making the final decision.
When I
talked to my wife about this, she thought I was
doing the right thing and
said, “Look, you
know I’ll always support you, whatever you want to
do.” So it really
was a decision that I had to
make for myself. I imagined myself at the age of
80 and
saying, “Okay, now I’m looking back on
my life. I hope that I have had as few regrets in
my life as possible.” I knew that when I was
80 I was not going to regret having tried
this. I knew that if I failed I wouldn’t
regret it, but the one thing I might regret is not
ever
having tried.
41. Jeffrey Bezos went
to his boss to talk to him about .
A. quitting his job B. having a
walk in Central Park
C. selling
books on the Internet D. opening a company
selling books
42. When Jeffrey Bezos
told his idea to him, his boss .
A. became indifferent B. refused him
with no reason
C. accepted it
at once D. asked him to give it a second
thought
43. The boss believed that it was a
good idea for somebody with .
A. a
good job B. no job C. curiosity D.
a lot of imagination
44. Jeffrey Bezos
imagined that at the age of 80 the one thing he
would regret is that
__________.
A. he
had ever tried. B. he had never
tried.
C. he had failed his
attempt. D. he had had only one job.
45. What can you infer from the passage?
A. Jeffrey Bezos decided to continue his job.
B. Jeffrey Bezos decided to carry out his
idea.
C.
Jeffrey Bezos’s wife made him carry out his idea.
D. Jeffrey Bezos started to imagine his
future.
Passage 4
Languages are remarkably
complex and wonderfully complicated organs of
culture.
They contain the quickest and the
most efficient means of communicating within their
respective culture. To learn a foreign
language is to learn another culture. In the words
of
a poet and philosopher, “As many languages
as one speaks, so many lives one lives.” A
culture and its language are as necessary as
brain and body; while one is a part of the
other, neither can function without the other.
In learning a foreign language, the best
beginning would be starting with the
non-
language elements of the language: its gestures,
its body language, etc. Eye contact is
extremely important in English. Direct eye
contact leads to understanding, or, as the
English saying goes, seeing eye-to-eye. We can
never see eye-to-eye with a native
speaker of
English until we have learned to look directly
into his eyes.
46. The best title for
this passage is__________
A. Organs of
Culture B. Brain and Body
C. Looking
into his eyes D. Language and Culture
47.
According to this passage, the best way to learn a
foreign language is__________
A. to read
the works of poets and philosophers
B. to
find a native speaker and look directly into his
eyes
C. to begin by learning its body
language
D. to visit a country where you
can study
48. According to this passage,
gestures are__________
A. spoken words
B. a non-language element
C. pictures in a
language D. written language
49. “As many
languages as one speaks, so many lives...”
means__________
A. if one learns many
foreign languages, one will have a better
understanding of his
own language.
B.
life is richer and more interesting if one knows
several languages.
C. no matter how many
languages one knows, one can never know more than
one's
own culture.
D. if a person
speaks only one language, he will live a very
happy life.
50. Which of the following doesn’t
share the same meaning with the others?
A.
signs B. gestures C. efficient D. body
