Introductions are important. A
proper introduction will leave a good
first
impression upon others. In the United states,
introductions are
usually rather simple. A
usual introduction includes a greeting, a
handshake, an exchange of names, and
sometimes, a few words about
one’s work.
Nowadays an exchanges of cards has become quite
popular.
Here is an example.
Jack: How do
you do ? I’m Jack Ryan, a sales clerk.
Paul:
Hello. I’m Paul Jones, a computer programmer.
You see, both men speak loudly and clearly. Of
course, their
handshake should be firm, too.
And they’ve both mentioned their names
and
jobs. Let’s take a look at how they go on with the
introduction.
Jack: Glad to meet you,
Paul. Here is my card.
Paul: Oh,, Ryan
Electronics Company. So you have your own firm.
Here is my card.
Jack: Thank you. And you
work for the Software Park
By this time
each has had a quick look at the cards. Now let’s
see
how they end their conversation.
Jack: They named Roger Smith president last
week, didn’t they ?
Paul: Yeah. That cool but
inexperienced young man.
5
He just
needs some time. Oh! Speaking of time, I’ve got to
run.
Bye.
Paul: Me, too. Nice to have met
you.

_______.
A. simple and friendly.
B. too
cold.
C. rather formal.
D. quite strange.
Task 2 Directions: This task is the same
as Task 1.
Questions 46 to 50 are based on
the following passage:
In ancient times the
most important examinations were spoken, not
written. In the school of ancient Greece
(古希腊)and Rome, testing
usually consisted of
saying poems aloud or giving speeches.
In the
European universities of the Middle Ages, students
who were
6
working for advanced
degrees had to discuss questions in their field of
study with people who had made a special study
of the subject. This
custom exists today as
part of the process of testing candidates
(参赛
者)for the doctor’s degree.
Generally,
however, modern examinations are written. The
written
examination, where all the students
are tested on the same questions,
was probably
not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it
came
into existence with the great increase in
population and the development
of modern
industry. A room full of candidates for a state
examination,
timed exactly by electric clocks
and carefully watched over by managers,
is
similar to a group of workers at an automobile
factory. Certainly,
during examinations,
teachers and students are expected to act like
machines.
One type of test is sometimes
called an “objective” test(客观试题).
It is
intended to deal with facts, not personal
opinions. To make up an
objective test, the
teacher writes a series of questions, each of
which has
only one correct answer. Along with
each question the teacher writes the
correct
answer and also three statements that are like
answers to students
who have not learned the
material properly.

Task 3
Directions:
After reading the following passage, you are
required to
complete the answers that follow
the questions asked. You
should write your
answers briefly on the Answer Sheet
correspondingly.
Jason Queally is
one of the fastest men in the world on a bicycle.
But do you really call the thing in the
picture a bicycle? Well, yes.
Jason’s human-
powered (人力的) machine, with its two wheels, is, of
course, a bicycle.
Every year, a very
important human-powered bicycle race is held in
Nevada, USA. The speed of the bike is measured
(测定) for only 200
metres, but players take
more than a kilometer to get their bikes going
fast. Jason Queally’s fastest speed for the
200-metre race was 103.5
kilometers an hour.
At this year’s race, Jason failed to reach
the finishing line. He was
speeding along at
about seventy kilometers an hour when he began to
lose control (控制) of his bike. When he tried
to slow down, it began to
smoke. Soon the
inside of his bike was filled with smoke. He
couldn’t
see, and he couldn’t breathe. At
seventy kilometers an hour, a crash (撞
击) could
be very serious. Jason was frightened. But he
managed to stop
the bike safely. He would
repair his bicycle and try again another time to
be the world’s fastest man on a bike. Better
luck next time, Jason.
Maybe you’re
surprised that these bikes go so quickly, but is
it
useful? It could be. Cars are becoming more
and more popular, and they
are very safe,
comfortable and easy to drive, but they also
pollute the air
in our cities. Scientists and
engineers are learning from fast racing bikes
how to make human-powered vehicles (车辆) that
might be useful for
8
daily
travel.
51. Is Jason’s human-powered machine a
bicycle?
