This book has 25 short stories and it
gives us
a vivid description of the living
condition and social
environment of
grotesque..
Here, Anderson defines the
grotesques as the
combination of the twist and
sweetness. No matter how
horrible they seem to
the ordinary people’s eyes, they still
have so
many and shining qualities which make them sweet
and beautiful. Moreover, Anderson never mean
to make the
grotesques ugly, but takes them as
examples to present the
unsuccessful people’s
