2. Background Information
Humans are not the only living things that can
communicate information to one another. There are some
interesting forms of communication among other animal
forms. Honeybees, for example, perform a kind of dance that
accurately transmits information about the direction.

Part I Warm-up activities
1. Lead-in questions
- When we study a language what do we usually learn?
(Words, sentences, pronunciation, grammar, etc.)






- If you meet a foreigner and you don’t know each other’s language, how do

you communicate?

- Are there times when we ordinary people, who have perfect hearing and
speaking ability, have to talk to each other not by the spoken word but by

Concentration is key for these boys, who are playing a game of Xiang Qi in
the ancient city of Suzhou, west of Shanghai. Xiang Qi is a traditional form
of chess that dates to the 7th century. Often played on makeshift boards
drawn on paper, the lengthy but popular game usually attracts curious
spectators.

Gestures and other body movements are an integral part of the means of


communication for us humans. It is necessary for us not only to learn the

language of spoken and written word, but also the gestures and body


movement of the people who speak the language. When we learn our

mother tongue, we imitate our parents and relatives and friends. When we


learn a foreign language, we have to observe native speakers who speak that


language as their mother tongue, and we also have to learn from books

about the subject.

by no means: used to emphasize a negative
