The old man walked with a cane(拐杖)
slowly into the restaurant. His poor jacket,
patched
(打补丁的) trousers, and worn-out shoes
made him stand out from the usual Saturday morning
breakfast crowd. Unforgettable were his pale
blue eyes that were bright like diamonds, large
rosy
cheeks, and thin lips held in a smile.
He walked toward a table by the window.
A young waitress watched him and ran over to
him, saying, “Here, Sir. Let me give you a
hand with that chair.”
Without a word,
he smiled and nodded a thank you. She pulled the
chair away from the
table. Steadying(稳住) him
with one arm, she helped him move in front of the
chair, and get
comfortably seated. Then she
pushed the table up close to him, and leaned his
cane against the
table where he could reach
it.
In a soft, clear voice he said,
“Thank you, Miss.”
“You are welcome,
Sir.” She replied. “My name is Mary. I’ll be back
in a moment. If you
need anything, just wave
at me!”
After he had finished a
delicious meal of pancakes, bacon, and hot lemon
tea, Mary
brought him the change, helping him
up from his chair and out from behind the table.
She handed
him his cane, and walked with him
to the front door. Holding the door open for him,
she said,
“Come back and see us, Sir!”
He nodded a thank you and said softly with a
smile, “You are very kind!”
When Mary
went to clean his table, she was surprised. Under
his plate she found a
business card and a note
written on the napkin, under which was a $$100
bill.
The note on the napkin read, “Dear
Mary, I respect you very much, and you respect
yourself, too. It shows by the way you treat
others. You have found the secret of happiness.
Your
kind gestures will shine through those
who meet you.”

I had the meanest mother in the world.
While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to
have cereal (谷类食物), eggs or toast. While
others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat
a
sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was
different from other kids' too. But at least I
wasn't
alone in my sufferings. My sister and
two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother insisted upon knowing where we
were at all times. She had to know who our
friends were and where we were going. She
insisted if we said we'd be gone an hour, then we
be
gone one hour or less—not one hour and one
minute. And she always insisted upon us telling
the
truth. Now you can see how mean she was.
The worst is yet to come. We had to be
in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next
morning. We had to wash dishes, make beds, and
learn to cook. We had to wear clean clothes and
take a bath, while the other kids always wore
their clothes for days. I believe she stayed awake
at
night thinking up mean things to do to us.
Through the years, things didn't improve
a bit. We could not lie in bed, “sick” like our
friends did, and miss school. Our marks in
school had to be up to par(达到正常水平). Our friends'
report cards had beautiful colors on them,
black for passing, red for failing. My mother,
being as
different as she was, would settle
for nothing less than ugly black marks.
As the years went by, we were one by one put to
shame. We were graduated from high
school.
With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and
demanding respect, none of us was
allowed the
pleasure of being a dropout.
My mother
was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four
children, a couple of us got
some higher
education. And whom do we have to blame for the
terrible way we turned out? You're
right, our mean mother. She forced us
to grow up into educated and honest adults.
Now I am trying to raise my three children. I am
filled with pride when my children call me
mean. Because, you see, I had the meanest
mother in the world.

February has long been a month of
romance. With the sweet smell of roses in the air,
romantic films hit cinemas and love stories
fill newspapers and magazines.
On the
14th day, it is a custom for a boy to take his
girlfriend out to dinner, buy her flowers
and
chocolates, write poems, sing to her or even spell
out her name with rose petals! This is what
you see on Valentine’s Day, a day named after
Valentine who was a priest in the third century
Rome. When the emperor decided that single men
could become better soldiers than those with
wives, he didn’t allow marriage.
But
Valentine continued to perform marriage ceremonies
for young lovers in secret. When
his actions
were discovered, the emperor sentenced him to
death. While in prison, it is said that
Valentine fell in love with the daughter of
his prison guard. Before his death, he wrote her a
letter,
which he signed “From your Valentine”,
an expression that is still in use today.
Valentine died for
what he believed in and so
he was made a Saint (圣徒), as well as becoming one
of history’s most
romantic characters.
Nowadays, Valentine’s Day is also popular among
Chinese young people. Some students
are
planning to make Valentine’s cards for parents,

The temperature of the sun is over 5 000
degrees Fahrenheit at the surface, but it rises to
perhaps more than 16 million degrees at the
center. The sun is so much hotter than the earth
that
matter can exist only as a gas, except at
the core.In the core of the sun, the pressures are
so great
against the gases that, though the
high temperature, there may be a small solid core.
However, no
one really knows, since the center
of the sun can never be directly observed.
Solar astronomers do know that the sun is divided
into five layers or zones. Starting at the
outside and going down into the sun, the zones
are the corona(日冕), chromospheres(色球层),
photosphere(光球层), convection(对流)zone and
finally the core. The first three zones are
regarded as the sun’s atmosphere. But since the
sun has no solid surface, it is hard to tell where
the
atmosphere ends and the main body of the
sun begins. The sun’s outermost layer begins about
10000 miles above the visible surface and goes
outward for millions of miles. This is the only
part
of the sun that can be seen during an
eclipse(日蚀)such as the one in February 1979. At
any other
time, the corona can be seen only
when special instruments are used on cameras and
telescopes to
shut out the glare of the sun’s
rays.
The corona is a brilliant, pearly
white, filmy light, about as bright as the full
moon.Its
beautiful rays are a sensational
sight during an eclipse. The corona’s rays flash
out in a brilliant
fan near the sun’s north
and south poles. The corona is thickest at the
sun’s equator.
The corona rays become thin
as they reach the space around the planets. By the
time the sun’s
corona rays reach the Earth,
they are weak and invisible.
16. Matter on
the sun can exist only in the form of gas because
of the sun’s ________.
A. size B.
age C. location D. temperature
17. With what topic is the second
paragraph mainly concerned ?
A. How the
sun evolved
B. The structure of the sun
C. Why scientists study the sun
D. The
distance of the sun from the planets
18. All
of the following are parts of the sun’s atmosphere
EXCEPT the ________.
A. corona B. core
C. photosphere D. chromospheres
19.
According to the passage, as the corona rays reach
the planets, they become ________.
A. hotter
B. clearer C. thinner D.
stronger
20. The paragraphs following the
passage is most likely to discuss ________.
A.
the rest layers of the sun B. the
development of the sun to its present form
C.
the eclipse of February 1979 D. the scientists
